curtconklin 10 Posted March 4 Posted March 4 I am a new member in Chicago and looking for assistance with a Sunfire AVR. Happy to pay someone for their time. Unit has a buzzing coming out of one channel. I either need to replace it or fix it. My integrator wants thousands of dollars to replace it with a Denon which requires new programming. I'd rather fix the Sunfire or buy a used one that doesn't have a buzz. But even in a swap situation, I need help. Afternoon project? All fun? $$$$ and lots of praise, gratitude and compliments? calanc @ Yahoo.com 7
Sk1Bum 12,878 Posted March 4 Posted March 4 Hello curtconkin and welcome to thecarversite.com. Glad you found us! Not far from Chicago, @Nahash5150has a repair, rebuild, upgrade shop in central Michigan. The website is www.nelionaudio.com. His work is impeccable, and he's one of the administrators here. He's upgraded a few Carver M1.0t amps for me, and he's done a lot of work for folks on this site. You can contact him through the nelionaudio website. His work carries a 3 year warranty. I hope that helps. 2

Half Life 1,130 Posted March 4 Posted March 4 (edited) Welcome from Virginia! Enjoy your stay! @Sk1Bum is correct. Greg at Nelion is damn good at what he does. He knows the Bob Carver stuff like the back of his hand. He's fixed a couple of pieces for me. Excellent work! Edited March 5 by Half Life 1
4krow 7,307 Posted March 4 Posted March 4 Welcome Curt, I know exactly what it feels like to happily pay someone else to do a job that I don't have a chance at getting right or just don't want to do it myself. For me, it is usually a plumber.
BobTFM35 3,056 Posted March 5 Posted March 5 @curtconklin Welcome to the Carver Site!! Love the Sunfire units. I had a TGIV. Which unit do you have? Hope you get it fixed.
curtconklin 10 Posted March 5 Author Posted March 5 I have the Sunfire Ultimate Receiver. It's been a great unit, and I hate the idea of spending thousands to replace it with something of a lower quality. But also I am a nerd. This runs my theater, but I have a two channel system with a McIntosh 7200 and LP12. One of my kids is running a refurbished Sansui 9090 and a systemdek TT and the other has a 70s Hitachi receiver (which could use some work) and a new TT. In storage I have a Sansui Eight and some other fun old stuff. I love to talk to people about hifi and learn what other nerds have. 2

In case you've not found it, we have a Members Systems area where you can post pics of your gear, and see other members setups. https://thecarversite.com/forum/20-members-systems/
Balok 1,731 Posted Tuesday at 01:39 PM Posted Tuesday at 01:39 PM Is your ultimate receiver a l or a ll? The later ones used inferior capacitors. Likely a change after Bob Carver sold the company. Sending the unit to Nelion is a good idea. The receivers are difficult to work on yourself
curtconklin 10 Posted Tuesday at 05:36 PM Author Posted Tuesday at 05:36 PM It is a II, however, I remember that Bob still owned the Company when I bought it - which was why I was drawn to Sunfire. That being said, I am still waiting to hear from Nelion.
