SteveFord 1,119 Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Some of this won't apply, obviously. I'm going to run this on a bunch of different sites for 30 days (end date 4/5/11) and then will tally and post the results. This uses a simple sliding scale from 1-5 with 1=sucks 2=poor 3=good 4=really good 5=exceptional.Please cut and past these questions into your reply. Thanks and please vote honestly and only once! How do you rate your: Overall Speaker Performance Overall Speaker Quality Value For Money Reliability Factory Technical Support Factory Service Ease of Doing Business With Your Dealer Ease of Doing Business With the Manufacturer Distribution Network Dealer Knowledge Technical Innovation Product Availability Brand Currently Owned: Next Speaker Purchase:
RichP714 3,163 Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 and what about planar-magnetic (Carver ALS)?

SteveFord 1,119 Posted March 5, 2011 Author Posted March 5, 2011 Yes, I would consider the Carver and Sunfire speakers to be part of the group.
TNRabbit 371 Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Overall Speaker Performance: 4.7 Stock woofers & the extreme low frequncies are very small cons among a host of pros. They image like no other ALS speaker. Also deducted a couple of minor points for difficulty to drive well, which is not uncommon amongst high end speakers costing MANY times more Overall Speaker Quality 4 Could have slent a few bucks more here & there, but then they would have cost more, so... Value For Money: 5 Reliability: 4.5 Factory Technical Support: N/A Carver was defunct when I bought them.... Factory Service: 0 ! Ease of Doing Business With Your Dealer: N/A .... Ease of Doing Business With the Manufacturer: N/A Distribution Network: N/A Dealer Knowledge: N/A Technical Innovation: 4.8 Only because Martin Logan had a VERY similar design first Product Availability: 2 ??? Brand Currently Owned: Carver AL-III Next Speaker Purchase: ?
Audioquest 8 Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Overall Speaker Performance - 4.5 (never seen a 5 unless cost-no-object but even those aren't perfect) - For anywhere near the money, better than any of the several electrostat or planar's I've owned. The ALS-Plat was probably close or as good just in a different way Overall Speaker Quality - 4.5 pretty easy to drive and doesn't pose an obscene load like many Value For Money - 5 Reliability - 5 Factory Technical Support - 5+ Factory Service - N/A no issues Ease of Doing Business With Your Dealer - N/A Ease of Doing Business With the Manufacturer - 5 Distribution Network - 1 in Alberta Dealer Knowledge - N/A Technical Innovation - 4.5 Has things most E-stat's or planers don't have such as adjustable bias, low frequency adjustment, high frequency brilliance control. Panel is made of 3 separate angled plains so dispersion is wide Product Availability - N/A in Alberta Brand Currently Owned: Sound Lab DynaStat Next Speaker Purchase: too early to tell. A larger Sound Lab if 'E-stat
oldtexasdog 2,456 Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Rather low WAF but tough beans. Well this dumbs down my question about how the speaker placement is critical to the sound field
Audioquest 8 Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Rather low WAF but tough beans. Now that's what I'm talking about for my next Sound Lab's!
SteveFord 1,119 Posted March 8, 2011 Author Posted March 8, 2011 For those of you who haven't already voted, a fellow made up this great spreadsheet today so please use this: https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=dFNrNFFXVjJha2N0SzRIQzZMVmc0Z3c6MQIf you've already voted, don't worry about this spreadsheet, I'll just add it in later on. Thanks Steve Ford P.S. If I had the cash I'd grab those Sound Labs!!!
