If you indulge SACD - RUN, don’t walk, and get this disc!
PhilDent replied to Daddyjt's topic in Physical digital
I bought it. Although, I'm bummed that it's $10 for shipping + CA tax. 😡 -
Welcome, but with a word of caution. I've only been here a few years and I have already accumulated 11 Carver Amps and a couple of BillD C1s. Enjoy the music.
-
Never shocked...but always prepared. I will just need to double check that the unanticipated knock on my door is not the result of an unconstitutional federal/state power grab. 😉. BTW, your speakers sound awesome!
-
I have had the pleasure to audition most of those speakers in @Daddyjt's exceptional setup, and I also have the pleasure to enable him to add this specimen to his already impressive collection.
-
The 2.9s that I picked up for @Daddyjt had these foam strips on them. They definitely look aftermarket - maybe your handiwork?
-
Tell me more about these foam anti diffraction strips. What do they look like? Where are they placed, etc.

I was drawn to the Carver world because of its power to dollar ratio. I am drawn to speakers that exhibit that same ratio. Of course one could buy 100k+ speakers that are mind blowing. But I can also buy $600 speakers that knock my socks off. At the moment I'm absolutely loving my NHT 2.9 speakers. Value for the dollar I can't imagine that I could get much better.

Worth Keeping or Start Over?
PhilDent replied to TomcatCrew's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
I'd go C1 with the BillD mod and m500t and get it mkii'd by one of the techs here. Below is an example of overdoing things. The Shisa dogs do make a difference. 😉 -
Find yourself a c-1 and get it "BillD" modded by a tech here on the site. The TFM-45 is a great sounding amp. Enjoy your audio journey and tell us about your system. -PhilDent

+1. I joined mid 2017 and by last count I have collected two BillD C-1 preamps and nine amplifiers. -
I just landed in the Carver patch...

Welcome Butcher! I like the BillD C1 preamp with the m500tmkii combination. Also, I am fond of the A400x and the TFM-45 amps. Enjoy your Carver journey. -PhilDent -
Mark, Based on our fun listening session together, I knew that you would like/love this recording. Years ago, when a buddy of mine, who was way more successful than I was, bought his first hi-fi/multi-channel system, he used this as a demo disk and it planted the seed in me, that one day, I will have a system as good as his...maybe even better. Anyhow, I'm glad you are enjoying it.

Absolutely it was! The downside was that I was seasick the entire day, and there was no reason for me to be on the boat that day. As the waves of nausea passed over me I continually repeated to myself, "And this too shall pass". To add insult to injury, the boat got tossed in the break and my audio mixer got flung to the floor causing it to be damaged. It cost me $500 to repair it. Ironically, I've never used it since.

I actually never saw the remake of Point Break, but I'm sure you're correct that it's a horrible movie. I like it for the fact that I got to go to Tahiti as part of a crew that shot behind the scenes. Below are a few pictures that I took from a boat in the break of Teahupoo while they were filming the surfing scenes.

How about the all girl power Ghostbusters.

Add Bill C-16 and watch the incoherent, leftist spiral of the Great White North.

Sadly I am coming to that same conclusion. I bought this budget receiver from accessories4less for~$300 and have not been disappointed by its performance. I do find it ironic that I have so little invested in the "brains" of the system and so much invested in Carver amplification.
-
This is where I bought my last receiver and it has performed flawlessly. I was checking out their site for a replacement, but it seems that all of their pre/processors are of the 11.2 variety and over 1K - way more than I need or want to pay.
-
Jeffs, Thanks for the research and input. I found myself going down the bunny hole as well. My initial thinking was that I should replace my receiver since I have no need for amplification and I've had the impression that the Yamaha pre-outs signal was not strong enough. It made sense to me that I would rather have a unit that focused on the pre outs for 5.1 music and had the HDMI capability that I was looking for. However, I'm finding that most of the separates have a ton of features that I don't need and cost a lot more than I want to spend. I agree that the Outlaw looks suspect. I'd prefer to spend money with a domestic company like Emotiva, but I haven't quite found anything that fits my needs.
-
Right you are. I'll take a second look at it. Thanks.
-
No HDMI on this receiver, so it won't fit the bill for me. Thanks for responding. PhilDent
-
Of course. The minister of sex and finance is ever vigilant. ? I checked out the Emotiva site and the MC-700 looks promising, yet it doesn't have the USB connectivity that I've become accustomed to. The Marantz 8802a looks awesome, but I don't want to pay for a lot of amplification and features that I will not use. I'd rather use that money to buy more Carver amps. ? I'll keep looking around.
-
I'll take a look at it. I know LT has highly recommended their receivers, I just want to find something that fits my needs. I don't know what that is. Also, I forgot to mention that one of the most used features on the Yamaha receiver is the USB stick that allows me to remotely select songs. On another note, I just replaced the A-400x for the rears to the TFM-45 and now there is a an annoying buzz. ?
-
Carversite, I was hoping to cull the knowledge of the members here and ask for recommendations for the next step in my system. Attached is a picture of my current system. I am wanting to replace the Yamaha receiver with something more suited to the tasks that I need it for. Since, as you can see, the Carver amps are taking care of the amplification, I don't need a receiver that has the ability to amplify (and the Yamaha's pre-outs seem very weak). So, as I see it, my needs are pre-amplification to the amps, and distribution of HDMI signals. I need something that outputs at least 2 HDMI signals so I can watch TV and have a playlist going on the smaller screen. Also, although I have never actually tuned in an am/fm signal, it might be helpful to have that feature. And it goes without saying that it should be wifey friendly to operate, although I have the system setup so that she doesn't have to mess with my setup if she just wants to watch TV. I'm looking forward to your thoughts pointing me in the right direction. As of yet, I haven't found anything that quite seems to fit the bill.

This is the first one that came to mind for me. My wife and I were newly married and this seemed to be the soundtrack for doing house projects before the kiddos decided to come into existence. (Then again we might have had some agency in that happening ?) -PhilDent P.S. I was tempted to say Steely Dan's AJA, but I don't particularly care for the track "I Got the News". It seems to me that it is one of those tracks that is more fun for the musicians to play than it is to listen to.
