  1. I recently put my 5.1 setup back together, and I was immediately reminded how much I like 5.1 music. This is one of my latest additions to the collection. I love hearing classic albums in surround.
  2. Welcome! You have found a great place for someone with your/our interests. I'm curious as to why you call the room "the boonies"? PhilDent
  3. That is one clean install. Great job hiding all the wires. No matter how hard I try I seem to end up with a rat's nest.
  4. A Mormon told me that they don't drink coffee. I said, "A cup of coffee every day gives you wonderful benefits." He said, "Like what?" I said, "Well, it keeps you from being Mormon..." Emo Philips
  5. A friend of mine just got a trophy wife....obviously not first place. -Steven Wright Well, my brother says "Hello". So, hooray for speech therapy. -Emo Philips
  6. How about this one: What do you call a guy who likes to hang around musicians? The drummer
  7. I heard a version of this as a drummer joke: What's the difference between a drummer and chicken? The chicken can feed a family of 4. How about a couple more drummer jokes for good measure: How do you get a drummer off your porch? Pay for the pizza. What do you call a drummer without a girlfriend? Homeless
  8. I find most listings of SACDs confusing. I'm not sure if the terms are not standardized or I just haven't caught on to the naming convention. I'm always looking for 5.1 SACDs so I look to see that it says "multi-channel". On the other hand "hybrid" I think means that the SACD also contains a 16bit/44k layer that can be played on a standard CD player. Sometimes the web pages will let you filter results by multi channel or stereo. Maybe someone else can chime in if they've figured it out.
  9. I don't know if this applies to you, but when I buy SACD's I want them to be multi-channel. I've bought from Music Direct, but they have a very poor selection of mulit-channel/5.1
  10. The best argument I've heard against such an assertion is that, had America staged a moon landing the Russians would have been the most motivated and well equipped to debunk such a hoax, since they wanted to get there first.
  11. Typically my hi fi journey has taken me to artists whose recordings featured a lot of rests to accentuate the music. I really enjoy when musicians can break down a song and define it by what they don't play. Well, these guys are the exception. One might criticize this as progressive, egotistical, mathrock. This might be warranted, but man can they play complicated music, and I still find enjoyment without feeling like I've listened to a heady lecture on the joys of complicated time signatures. These guys are definitely virtuoso musicians.
  12. I enjoyed this movie and soundtrack. \(x = {-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac} \over 2a}\)
  13. I heard this joke a little differently: Calling illegal aliens "undocumented immigrants" is like calling drug dealers "unlicensed pharmacists"
  14. OK. This beautiful amp is starting to lurk. I thought for sure that it would be gone by now. Still so tempting...
  15. One of wifey's favorites. This album, a bottle of wine and some sweet talkin' have resulted in some enjoyable evenings. The trick is to find the precarious balance of decibels and dosage of wine.
  16. Randog311, I remember listening to this song (and the entire 90125 CD) at my friend's house. His parents had just bought a Kenwood CD player and Bose 901's. I was blown away at how good it sounded. I pre-ordered this months ago and it just showed up today. Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here in 5.1
  17. This is so tempting, but I got an unequivocal "no" on the approval of this purchase from the minister of S & F. Unfortunately, she is right. We have a second floor deck off of our master bedroom that started leaking...down the wall and into the dining room. Good Times. So our money is allocated elsewhere. But, I must say, that amp is quite the specimen. I hope someone buys it quickly, so that it stops taunting me.
  18. This is Sea Change by Beck in 5.1 I've been wanting this for a while and finally sucked it up and paid more than I wanted to. It is mixed by Elliot Scheiner. I find his mixes to be stellar and to date have not found one that I did not enjoy. This one is fantastic.
  19. Does anyone else have problems playing back the tracks linked above? When I try and playback most of the tracks, they cut off after 10 - 15 seconds. I've tried re-downloading and also just playing them back from the link, but so far no joy. Am I doing something wrong?
  20. Welcome Mr. Dew, I'll echo with what others have said. The C-1 BillD and the M500T Mkii are excellent choices. Enjoy the music.
  21. I got this album when I bought a collection of SACDs from another member here. It sat on my shelf for a long time because I never was much of a NIN fan, and most songs I can't play when my kids are within earshot. I gave it another listen recently, and while I would characterize the majority of the tracks as cacophonous, auditory aggravation, there are a few tracks that I could tolerate. I was surprised by the impressive utilization of the 5.1 soundstage. Trent Reznor creates layers of sound that I found myself unexpectedly enjoying.
  22. Welcome to the site. Sounds like you will fit right in. There are a lot of like minded people here and so much Carver knowledge. Enjoy the music.
  23. I bought this Cat Stevens album, Tea for the Tillerman off of HDTracks in WAV 24/96. I don't know how it stacks up against the vinyl dbx encoded version that AndrewJohn mentions above, but I was very impressed with its quality. Below is what they say about the transfer. You can decide for yourself if it has merit or if it is HDTracks marketing propaganda. I know they have been caught in the past trying to pull off fast ones. The groundbreaking, multi-platinum folk/rock masterpiece, Tea for the Tillerman remains one of singer/songwriter Cat Stevens’ finest works. The beautifully written and well-arranged album encompasses themes of spiritual fulfillment, delivering hit after hit. The album includes “Where Do the Children Play?,” “Sad Lisa,” “Father and Son” and the highly regarded single “Wild World.” Tea for the Tillerman established Stevens as a driving force in music history and this high resolution release offers the ideal way to experience this timeless classic. We are so fortunate that Ted Jensen, who originally mastered Tea for the Tillerman, for compact disc, was available to do these hi res transfers. Ted was kind enough to share some information about the process: “The tapes are in still excellent condition, the Dolby A encoded BASF tape used has held up very well compared with other formulations used in the mid 70’s and later. The tapes sound excellent. I’ve done no limiting or compression on these files at all. Playback was done on an Ampex ATR100, and the A/D converter was a prototype MSB unit that David Chesky was good enough to loan us.” - Ted Jensen, Sterling Sound Reviews The 192/24 download is ... the definitive version of this classic album. - The Absolute Sound, May/June 2012
  24. Welcome to the site! I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm certain somebody here does. Enjoy the music!
