  1. Just thought, these may be old links prior to updates on the website. If so, disregard!
  2. Tried to use the link to the Member Map this evening and this is what I get: Sorry, there is a problem The page you requested does not exist Error code: 1S160/2 Got it on some other links I've tried in the last couple of days too. Don't remember which ones off the top of my head.
  3. Welcome aboard! As the others have said, a lot of good people here and many with great knowledge. And they all like to share what they can! So enjoy the ride!

    Get Back

Now that is funny! I lived in Liverpool, NY for 15 years! My office is in Liverpool, NY. I'll have to see if Melvin is still around!! 🤣🤣 I've seen the ads for the movie (series - whatever you want to call it). Not really into the Beatles, meaning not a super fan, but I do like their musice and have several albums. Not sure which is my favorite, but there are several that I spin on occasion. I am usually up for a documentary about the various groups I like, but not sure I could stomach 6 hours worth. (I realize it is in 3 parts, but still 6 hours is a long time!)
  5. Welcome back! I know it gets challenging to follow the various posts, and various forums while working and raising kids, i.e. life as some know it! Good to see that you will be able to enjoy getting things back into action.
  6. Welcome aboard! I currently have a pair of Polk 12's on the setup in my daughter's bedroom that has a HR-772 and a TL-3200 at the moment. Always liked the sound of Polks when paired with Carver gear. Can never go wrong!
  7. This conversation reminds me of when I was thinking if buying my Amazings. They were priced at a steal of a price and I was talking with my teenage son about it. They were in MD and I am in central NY. I was on the fence and my son chimes in with, you need to just buy them. And when you get them, you run them for a while and if you don't like them (yeah, right) you can always sell them for what you got them for if not more! So that following Saturday, u ended up driving to Baltimore to get my current speakers. Boy I am glad I listened to him!🤣🤣. (Like I wasn't going to buy them already!). You know you want them, and are trying to justify your desires to a bunch of enablers that will convince you to get them! Good luck trying to resist!
  8. I have heard LaScalas in the past, and I have to admit, even though not a huge Klipsch fan, I would love having a pair of those. Note - I do currently own a pair of Heresy II's that I like, but those are more nostalgic pieces for me from my youth. And I did have a pair of KSB2.1 and the matching center channel in my HT setup years ago. I say, find the room, damn it! You can never have too much stuff! Especially audio gear!
  9. I too sometime forget about doing that. I also do it when cleaning my need on my needle on the TT. That tends to make a hellacious noise when everything is on and pumping. I also admit to being lazy and not turning off the speakers when I turn the gain control. I have been in the habit though to turn the gain control (depending on the source I am going to use) before I even power the amp up in the first place! It is frustrating, but keep at it. You will get there soon. I know it can be frustrating. The guys (and gals) here will head you in the right direction.
  10. Could be something as simple as dirty contacts. I lost sound out of the left channel one time on my setup while using the C16. Was frustrating. Thought it was maybe my equalizer, but even had the loss of signal without the EP1 (External Processor 1 button) engaged. Even hooked it up to EP2, same issue. Took it out of system and brought it to a buddies who repairs gear when visiting last summer. He said, "did you clean the contacts on the switches?". Low and behold, a little deoxit on the contacts and a few pushes in and out on all of the face panel buttons, viola, been up and running with full sound without a hiccup since! The loud pop on the C-19, I do get it once in a little bit (refurbished by myself not to long ago). It depends on how loud I have the volume setting and how quickly I flip the switch. Mostly, when I get it, is when I am turning up the gain from 0db. Like I said, not all the time. I've cleaned it several times, I checked the circuit, nothing funky. Just depends on how it is feeling that day! I am learning this electronics trickery as I go along, and it is trickery! (J/K). Both of these units are incredible pieces of equipment and should make you setup sing! Although, they will also make you notice how bad some of the other pieces of your system may be. Don't give up. You will get to your Audio Nirvana soon.
  11. I have both! My C-16 was an eBay purchase over 12 years ago. Paid over $300 for it (with shipping), so, Will Meyer. I don't think your prices aren't off base. Now I've been working on a C-19 that I acquired from someone I know at a reasonable price, but have had to do a bit of work to get it where it is at. So it depends on what you are looking for as to how much you will have to pay! A unit that is in great shape and can sing right out of the gate, C-16 around $450 to $550; C-19 around $1,100 to $1,500. If you are willing to settle for one that is not museum quality or might need some TLC, take a few hundred off the price for the C-19. A hundred or so less for the C-16. Having both units, I have to say it is a toss up for the most part. Both are incredible units, but I have to admit, I've been wanting the -C19 ever since I heard one 15 years ago, but could never afford one. Now that I have been able to learn enough (to be dangerous), my skills are such that I felt like I could take on a unit that needed some TLC. And now that I've been working on it (almost ready to go) I have to admit, the C-19 wins out in my mind. Others feel differently! The C1-9 is going to take the place of my trusty C-16 in the main setup and the C-16 will move to my bedroom setup! Sorry for the ramble. Welcome aboard. There is no turning back now! Neil
  12. Okay, so I get a call at work today from my son. He is home because he decided to virtual school (high school) for this semester until this Covid crap is under better control. Anyhow, he tells me he was listening to my main setup in the basement and he walked away for 30 seconds and when he came back, the left channel didn't have any sound. He assures me he wasn't playing it loud (not that it matters - have Sunfire 300x2 driving my Amazings), so loud hasn't been a problem. He also tells me the Radio Shack APM-500 is showing output is going to the left channel (meters are moving). I tell him I can't talk him through what to check over the phone at the moment and that we will deal with it when I get home. So, after dinner, we go about the typical steps to start with the basics in troubleshooting. Figure it was a good time to teach him how to figure stuff out on his own in the future! We try a different source, still no sound. Try switching off the External processor switch on the C16 (feeding signal through equalizer), still no sound (had an issue with a dirty switch there this summer - so had to make sure that wasn't it). Then switched right and left inputs on the amplifier to make sure it wasn't an output problem with the preamp, and also switched from Main 1 out to Main 2 out. Silence still on the left. Then switched speaker wires, left to right and right to left. Still no sound out of the speaker to the left (now the amplifier's right speaker terminals). So, figure it is a speaker issue. Pull my speaker wires and put my multimeter on the speaker terminals - OL - open circuit. So, pull the fuse and sure enough, clear space between the two ends. Now the fun begins. I get looking at the fuse, and I don't ever remember seeing a fuse with a center element like this. So try and read it, with my eyes as sucky as they are, even with my glasses, makout Buss MD??4 250V (on other end cap). So my son reads it and comes up with MDO4. I'm like, I don't think that is correct. Should be MDL, maybe. Anyhow, we get searching and the MDL 4 is a slow blow fuse. I've always thought speakers were usually fast blow fuses, similar to amps, etc. So, I tell him "go pull the other fuse out of the right speaker". He comes up with the weird ass looking fuse that I've never seen the likes of before! But then I get looking on here and I see where someone posted about blowing fuses on the Amazing Silvers and how there was a service bulleting about changing the fuse rating to MDL 3.2A because the 4 wasn't proper to protect them. Then he mentions in the post about MDQ fuses, and wham, Google search, there is the funky fuse from the right speaker. So, apparently my Amazings had MDQ4 fuses. Who knew? Not me, that's for sure. So, being that MDL and MDQ fuses are similar in nature, i.e. slow blow or time delay whichever you prefer, the only difference I have found in my searching is that the MDL may go a little bit quicker than the MDQ. Will it matter? There is also a pretty substantial $$ differential between the two, to the tune of about $3.40 more for the MDQ (from local sources). Question is, will it be worth the difference if they are nearly the same fuse as far as performance goes? And if so, what "is" the advantage? Neil
  13. Welcome aboard! Way too much gear here to get you on the OCCD express! Buckle up and enjoy your ride!
  14. Welcome aboard! OCCD is a sickness, but it is the best one I know of! Glad you are starting your journey!
  15. I have to agree on the ALS. I've never heard them until I visited a buddy a few years ago that had a stereo shop at one point. He always had a set running! Fell in love with the sound! Never thought I would be able to ever get a pair or have a house that could have room for the pair! Found a set 5 1/2 hours away at a steal of a price and jumped on it. Drove to pick them up (were trade-in's) at a hifi shop in Baltimore. They auditioned them for me (and still blew me away), and then a friend of the shop owners came in and they auditioned a brand new set of KEF floor standers for him. Same CD, same amp, same CD player! Couldn't tell the difference between my ALS's and the KEF's. And I paid 1/10th of the cost of the KEF's (which were $5K)! Got them home and have been living in audio nirvana since! (Note - caveat is I had to get divorced and buy a house with a partially finished basement! - Don't worry, the divorce and house came before the speaker acquisition!) As far as the polks go - I haven't heard a pair that I would walk away from! Had Monitor 5's and still have SDA-1C's and Monitor 12's Series 2. Paradigm (any of the older SE MKII's or MKIII's are good also - had a pair of 5 SE MKIII's - ex now has those!) Neil
  16. Welcome aboard. Nice collection of amps! It is a long journey you are about to embark on with this site. A bunch of enablers that make you want to add more gear to your collection!
  17. Welcome aboard! As Brian_at_HHH stated about OCCD, once you get your first piece, you have started on that long and wonderful spiral of adding to your collection. Hope you enjoy the ride!
  18. Welcome aboard! Newer member myself, but always searched for information on this site before joining. Vast knowledge on this site! The only problem I have had is that I now want to own more Carver gear than I already have!
  19. My vinyl collection!
  20. I appreciate all the "Welcome" wishes! Unfortunately I know enough to be dangerous with a soldering iron. Not one to shy away from any task, as long as I feel I have good direction to go in (aka - as far as knowledgeable people are willing to guide me). Here are a couple of other pics of my "Vinyl Den"! This is the "Listening Area"
  21. I am also going to apologize in advance. I haven't had much time to learn the posting "ins" and "outs" and "do's" and "don'ts".
  22. Thanks for the very warm welcome! I really am not sure I will ever be able to stop the addiction, but it is a good one to feed! "Welcome @2chGearBuff to the "Carver Hybrid Amazings" club, too @BarryGand I both have a pair of Amazing Originals with the full-length ribbon and crossover upgrade kit. Love them too." Thanks. The one thing I am not sure of is if I have the crossover upgrade kit on mine. I never pulled the back cover off to investigate. Love the way they sounded from the day I got them! So, I figure, don't mess with it if you like the way it sounds!
  23. Just joined a few weeks ago and finally getting around to introducing myself. I hail from Central NY. I used to be on one of the other Carver forums of days gone by, went by icravcarver for those that may remember back in the day! I've been collecting Carver gear since the early 90's (after college!!). My first exposure to Carver was back when I was in middle school (8th grade) and an older neighbor, friend of my brother and sister, who know I was into stereo gear, took me to one of his buddies houses to see his new setup! Carver M-400 (not sure if it was a "t" version), C-9, Kenwood turntable, not sure of the pre (pretty sure it wasn't a carver) and some Klipsch Heresy's and put on Zeppelin II Whole Lotta Love. They put me in the "sweet spot" and proceeded to blow me away! Been hooked since. Since then, I started my collection with a HR-772, and have moved on to various other separates. Pieces I've owned (but no longer do unfortunately) are TFM-55 (still have it, need to resurrect it from the dead in the near future), TL-3220, TL-3300, and a TD-1700. Current pieces in my collection are TFM-45, C-16, C-19 (in process of re-capping/tweaking), SDA-490T, TD-1770, a new to me TL-3300 (missed the last one - so found another), and original Amazings (well originals with a 60" ribbon - not the (2) 30" ribbons)! Now the Amazings are being driven by my new to me Sunfire 300x2 amp. For my vinyl pleasure I currently have an Avid Diva II with a Rega RB-330 arm, and Vessel AS3SS cartridge in my main setup, which replaced my Linn Axis with Akito I arm and Ortofon Super OM-20 cartridge. I also am a big Polk speaker fan. I currently have a pair of SDA-1C's in my HT setup, Monitor 12's in my bedroom setup, and did have a pair of Monitor 5's, but sold them to a buddy of mine (who I see often enough it is if I still own them!). I almost snagged a pair of SDA-1.2's around the same time I grabbed the Amazings, but just couldn't justify having both! (Well, who needs to justify having any of this, but I let my brain talk me out of it!) I have a bunch of other gear, and some I am trying to fix up (starting to teach myself how to do it yourself - especially with the lack of competent techs in my area!). I could ramble on and on about this addiction.... wait, I mean hobby! I am looking forward to meeting new people that share this love of Carver gear and maybe even hooking up with some old ones from before! Looking forward to being a member here! Here is a link to a photo of my main setup in my Vinyl Den!: https://photos.app.goo.gl/PXkdi6BYZARLNsEK7 Neil
