  1. Afterwords I had to go for a blast on a motorcycle but even so, I am developing a thing for vintage slide rules and horn rimmed glasses...
  2. I had a buddy come over today and we measured the 3.6s downstairs and then went upstairs to measure the MMGs, 1.6s and 1.7s. We also threw one of the new Maggie Woofers into the mix - the woofer is going to be part of the Mini Maggie speaker system. The woofer didn't do beans with the 3.6s, made the 1.7s and 1.6s sound worse and really improved the MMGs. It's hard to tell from these graphs but it did fill in the MMGs quite a bit so the soundstage was a lot fuller. I think that the Mini Maggie system is going to be really good as it'll have that woofer plus two mini 3.7 midrange and ribbon sections. MMGs MMGs with Maggie Woofer 1.6 1.6 with Maggie Woofer 1.7 3.6 For my troubles, it was announced that I spent the day doing a Geekfest. Women. Well, she may be right...
  3. I think I've got it - two large triangles that I can bolt each panel to. The triangles would then be tied together top and bottom. I had the right idea but just wasn't sure on the execution. Maybe have them made out of square section tubing which I can then fill up with steel shot. I don't think that those Mye stands go up high enough as these panels are 6' tall.
  4. It'll work for a bit. I'll go with Mye stands or something similar later on but I'm not sure if they go up as high as they should.
  5. Once you go black... MMGs which I'm not sure where to put yet 1.6s Braced 3.6s Fugly but functional
  6. Today I managed to do the following: Replaced the old beat white speaker socks on the MMGs with new black ones and figured out why the tweeter section wasn't working on one. Good old FIDO pissed on one and the vile mutt's urine actually ate through two of the spade connectors! Got that fixed and they sound just like new. Those are really great little speakers. Then I replaced the old crappy white socks on the 1.6s with new black ones and restained the wood trim. She looks-a much more betterer. As it that wasn't enough torture for one day I made a set of stands for the 3.6s so those giant panels aren't at the mercy of those dipshit feet that Magnepan feels are sufficient. The increase in bass and the focus of the soundstage is dramatic. I'm beat!
  7. For those of you who haven't already voted, a fellow made up this great spreadsheet today so please use this: https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=dFNrNFFXVjJha2N0SzRIQzZMVmc0Z3c6MQ If you've already voted, don't worry about this spreadsheet, I'll just add it in later on. Thanks Steve Ford P.S. If I had the cash I'd grab those Sound Labs!!!
  8. Rather low WAF but tough beans.
  9. Yes, I would consider the Carver and Sunfire speakers to be part of the group.
  10. Some of this won't apply, obviously. I'm going to run this on a bunch of different sites for 30 days (end date 4/5/11) and then will tally and post the results. This uses a simple sliding scale from 1-5 with 1=sucks 2=poor 3=good 4=really good 5=exceptional. Please cut and past these questions into your reply. Thanks and please vote honestly and only once! 11. It is true, the teenboppers and 20-somethings don't care about anything other than iPods. I tried to interst Lynda's kids in my stereos but they neither know nor care. My purchases are 99% vinyl and CD-Rs nowadays so I guess I'm helping in a very small way. The decline in music quality hasn't helped matters too much, either. There's just not all that much out there that interests me enough to buy it.
  12. I'll second the Canadians making really good preamps. It must be the long Winters or something.
  13. Exactly what did you do to your Maggies? I'm waiting for a new ribbon for one of my 3.6s - I think that having a subwoofer to close behind it may have led to it's early demise.
  14. I have some of their stuff but am not too crazy about them. They were pretty good in the Crossroads 2007 DVD if you haven't already seen it.
  15. Here's some new records (not CDs) that I've gotta get: Buddy Guy has a new one out, sounds really good PJ Harvey has one coming out shortly John Lee Hooker & Canned Heat - supposed to be a great pressing which I'd better get before they're all gone Deep Purple - Made In Japan - same as above
  16. What's your price range for a preamp?
  17. That is a steal! Check for wire delamination (up at the top and bottom of the loops) and give them a good listen for any sort of weird buzzes. If all is good, cross a sub over at 40hz, place them a good 3' out from the rear and side walls and you'll be all set. They will show up anything that's sub par in your system so consider yourself forewarned. They go real good with big tube amps.
  18. For the price, 1.6s are hard to beat.
  19. I've got a thread going for posting Planar Porn (speakers, not nudies) and so far, only ONE Carver system. Surely we can do better than that? http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=86465.0
  20. Are the Norman, Oklahoma police still hiding behind the billboard like they did in the 70s? I think you'll be very happy with an M500t Mk. II - good sound and a decent amount of power. I had an M500 Mk. II and an M500t Mk. II and preferred the 't' variant as it had a warmer sound to it. The 't', I believe, stands for transfer function which is Carver speak for making the amp sound like another model which were usually tubes. In the case of the M500t, I think that it wasn't voiced like any particular amplifier, just to what Bob Carver found to be pleasing.

Leon Russell being cooked by cannibals isn't bad, either. The album itself kind of grows on you but it was savaged by the critics when it came out. I just checked out Leon's site and he's got an album with Sir Elton John coming out next month (Oct 2010).

Most of Zappa's covers were pretty good. Here's one from The Who (good album if you don't have it already):

    Vinyl Links

Amazon.com is a good source for new vinyl and if you're looking for new vinyl on eBay type the artist's name followed by "sealed"; i.e., The Kinks sealed. That will allow you to skip past all of the used crap (pun intended).
