Saw this movie tonight. I enjoyed it. Great story of Casablanca records and Neil Bogart. Lots of great music references from the early/mid '70's. The movie rambles a bit and probably over emphasizes Bogart himself. But, there are some nice moments especially for those of us who grew up in the '70's.

I have two m1.5t's. I run Infinity Kappa 8 speakers, which need a lot of amp. Even with just one m1.5t pushing (and even before Nelion upgraded the amp), the amp never got hotter than 100 deg at his warmest location. I have had instances where it got hotter, but those were always when I had something sitting directly on top of the amp and no way for it to breathe. So, if the amp is working hard and the top is blocked, it can get overheated. But, if you vent them, and maybe add a fan, should be no issue. Now with 2 m1.5't's pushing, and both upgraded to mkII by Nelion, I rarely see temps above 90 deg F on either of my amps.

A little borderline pedophilia from the '80's. Probably wouldn't fly in today's world, lol. This is one of those MTV era clips where the video sells the music. (Also, Billy Idol could predict the future, apparently, with all the huge flat screen TV's.)

Welcome! I'll bet that 18" sub really rocks your neighborhood :). -
Welcome! Great story about your Dad's love for Carver and passing it down to you....

Was in the mood for some '80's tonight. Saw this band live at the Royal Oak Music Theater in Detroit in 1984. I had an aisle seat and Terri Nunn came into the crowd and spent time singing right next to me.... the 18 year old version of me needed a cold shower later that night.

So, I have a chance to pick up a pair of Klipsch Heresy II speakers. This pair has the horns updated by Bob Crites. Great condition, matching serial numbers, etc. I see lots of discussion out there about Heresy's... but, have never listened to a pair. Anyone in Carver-land have a pair? Any thoughts on whether they would be good to add to my vintage audio collection (My main pair of speakers right now is a refurbished pair of Infinity Kappa 8's). What would you pay for a pair? Thanks everyone.

LIstening to my 1974 first pressing........bought when I was a 9 year old KISS fan, LOL. They weren't actually that bad in the early days...

Thank you for that explanation. I haven't had any experience with tube amps, but I'm starting to get an "itch"... I'm actually very happy with the sound I'm getting from my SS amps. There's no rational reason why I should be seeking out a different sound. I think it's more FOMO than anything... It's like that feeling I get whenever I see Carver gear for sale on ebay... I have to remind myself, at the end of the day, there's only so much gear I can fit inside my house and find the time to play with, lol.

I find that the sound I like is primarily dependent on the source recording and playback media. On the same system of turntable/preamp/amp/speakers some records sound terrific, some don't. I find some CD's to be harsh, some not. Yes, amp and speakers are the heart and soul... but, once past a certain performance level, it's all about the inputs, I feel. Having said all that, I do think there's a "matching" that I'd like to explore. Would tube amp or SS amp be better, generally, for listening to old records? Would a tube amp tame some of the harsh sounding early era CD's I have? I'd love to know if anyone has done any studies on the best system to match with the variety of music media that is out there....

Thanks for posting. This was a great video to watch. I stream hi-res from Qobuz a lot. I really like the app and the sound quality I get. All the songs on Qobuz are at least CD quality 44khz/16 bit and many are higher resolution, up to 192Khz/24bit. To me, the CD quality songs sound as good as the songs streamed at higher resolution. I really cannot tell any difference and this video is a very good explanation of why that is. There were a few cases where I "swore" I heard a difference from hi-res vs CD quality resolution... but, when I really pushed myself to do objective A vs B comparisons, I can't hear it. So, I'm certain any differences I noted were all "in my head", lol. Having said all that, I've also convinced myself that there is a major difference between 44khz/16 bit and anything less, or lossy, for sure. So, as the author of this video suggests, I think Philips did a great job of setting the resolution standard for digital music back in the day. Also, I was unaware that old CD players were not 16 bit capable. That could explain why I do sense a difference in sound quality from my vintage CD player vs streaming at CD level resolution...of course that could just be the age of the components in the player, too.

Welcome to the site! I had a similar question a year or so ago about streaming. I've tried several things since then.... my first inkling was to go with a "Bluesound Node" streamer. Seems to be a decent device that won't break the bank. And, I have since learned there are others using it with great success and enjoyment. Several on this site recommended Oppo players. But, being budget conscious, I couldn't really bring myself to buy one (I've heard they have started to decrease in price a bit). At the end of the day, the engineer in me decided I could DIY my own streamer for not so much money. I bought a raspberry PI microcomputer, loaded it with Volumio software, attached it to a Schiit DAC, and I was off and running. The Volumio software was nice...allowed for connectivity to TIDAL and Qobuz (I mostly stream from the interweb.....don't have too many of my own files). When this setup worked, it worked well. I loved the sound. But, there were lots of "bugs"... and I found myself constantly having to tinker with computer code. So, I moved away from the Raspberry PI, and am now just using an old underutilized Mac Mini I had lying around hooked up to the same Schiit DAC. I've got the Qobuz app on the Mac and I control the Mac from my iPhone or IPad with Google "Remote desktop" app. Qobuz will output directly to the Schiit DAC and play up the 24 bit 96khz resolution Qobuz offers. So, the sound is great and it all works reliably. I've even got myself a little mini pc screen next to the Mac so that others can see the album art of whatever is currently streaming. Lessons learned? At the end of the day, I probably shoulda just popped for the Bluesound Node, or Oppo... given the hoops I jumped through with the RPi and Volumio. But, if you have happen to have a Mac Mini lying around, that might be worth a shot with a good DAC on the back end. -

I'm listening to the sounds of 1984.... on the medium I had at that time. That's right- cassette tape. Believe it or not, it doesn't sound too bad. Even without the Dolby Noise Reduction turned on, lol.
