Rob 5,942 Posted November 19, 2020 Author Posted November 19, 2020 I have an opportunity to buy some KEF"s and I am asking for insight on these. If they are good speakers and which models to look for. 1
Brian_at_HHH 2,691 Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 Which model(s) are you eyeing, @Rob? I don't know them well, but I believe @itchitch may have a few and could offer insight. 1

Looks like the 95C's are a center speaker for a surround and I don't think that's what he meant. He told me they were about the same size as my RTR's Edited November 19, 2020 by Rob 2
Daddyjt 9,585 Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 (edited) KEF makes two distinct classes of speaker - a very nice, high-end line, and a “mass market” line that is “ok”... IME, they are capable, if not a bit laid back - probably not the best choice for a “warmer” sounding amp/pre... much like the B&W sound. If they are 950’s, they are very nice speakers... RodH 4,866 Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 Had a set of those ages ago. A little light on the bottom end, good mids. Late 80's build I think. 3
itchitch 4,467 Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 I enjoy my KEF LS50's in my office system. I did try using them for my HT front channels - didn't have enough ooomph for my taste 4

Rob 5,942 Posted November 19, 2020 Author Posted November 19, 2020 I was just curious about these speakers and I have enough CV’s. Lol 2 1
RodH 4,866 Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 I have (?) a set of Q50's I loaned to my niece 8-9 years ago. Really liked them. 2
Rob 5,942 Posted November 20, 2020 Author Posted November 20, 2020 So here they are and I would say they are very clean and almost mint by looking at all the pics. 5
gburke 367 Posted November 20, 2020 Posted November 20, 2020 Those look pretty dang nice! 8in drivers? 2

Rob 5,942 Posted January 25, 2021 Author Posted January 25, 2021 (edited) Today was a Polk rebuild day in the workshop/soundroom. Polk's are really a different kind of speaker. Totally different than any speaker I have tore into. Drivers are different and I am thinking that the speaker is divided into to 2 totally different kinds of circuits. One side is wired in series and the other side, in the same cabinet, is wired in parallel. 🤦♂️ Weird. But I guess that is what makes Polks so unique. Also I discovered tonight that back in 1987 October must have been a leap year month instead of February as you will see in. the photo I attached. Thanks @BarryG and @Daddyjt for helping me get parts around for the project. I really appreciate it. And also I got rid of the abortion tweeters @RodH and filled in the screwed up hole that someone made. Cant believe how people destroy vintage equipment . I should have the caps this week and a new sound will be heard this weekend. Cant wait to experience these big Polk's. I need to find some big emblems or stickers to cover the repair area and match the 2 speakers. Edited January 25, 2021 by Rob 2
Daddyjt 9,585 Posted January 25, 2021 Posted January 25, 2021 The crossover anomalies you mention have to do the the “SDA Effect” - half of the drivers get a sort of “cancelling” signal in each cabinet. This is also tied in to the umbilical that connects the two speakers together. 3
Rob 5,942 Posted January 28, 2021 Author Posted January 28, 2021 (edited) I finished up the mechanical aspects of the SDA’s last night and listened to some music. Everything works and sounds great. Thanks to @Daddyjtand @BarryG for furnishing some parts. I really do appreciate it and I am excited to see what these really sound like with better placement. Edited January 28, 2021 by Rob 2 6
Daddyjt 9,585 Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Glad you revived them! FYI, if you are using the interconnect cable (and thus the “SDA” effect), it is strongly recommended by Polk that you not toe-in the speakers.... 4
BarryG 2,853 Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 (edited) I have mine about 2 ft from front wall (wall behind speaker) pointing strait ahead, about 5 1/2 ft between them, and umbilical cord attached! I sit about 6 ft from them in center position. Play some early Led Zeppelin! A few magic cookies and your in audio nirvana! With sda mode, do NOT use sonic holography! 🤓 Edited January 28, 2021 by BarryG 3 1
Rob 5,942 Posted March 11, 2021 Author Posted March 11, 2021 The latest addition to the dilemma. Picked up these RTR's model HPR12M's really cheap and of course blindfolded. Not knowing anything except what I have read about various RTR models. Hour and a half drive and listened to them with some cheap boom box hooked to them so I could at least hear them and knew that a couple drivers worked. Brought them home and unhooked the Polk's and added them to the system. C1 and Premier 5 channel and to my surprise all the drivers worked and such a clean clear sound. Not a big wattage speaker only handling 100 watts a side but man they sound good. Think I will pair these up with the other RTR's I have and add them to the other Receiver 2000 coming. 1

Oddly, mine sound much better up against the wall. I've tried my SDA's all over my listening room, but located about 25% in from each L-R side of the far wall, with 50% of the room width between them for me really gives them a great presence - with the interconnect and no SH. 3 1
