Jeff CT-17 15 Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 Hello, I purchased my CT-17 with AV-64 new in the 80s. After sitting in its box for a few decades, a lot of moving for a while, I pulled it out and the tuner display would not light nor would any of the buttons work. There is intermittent function when holding remote buttons down. Based on other sites I replaced all power supply caps and checked for bad solder joints. These had no effect. I found that if I unground the circuit board with the tuner, the tuner functions works. Not sure what this means. Wondering if anyone has run across this before? Electronics are not my strong suite. wrf 5,329 Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 Jeff, Welcome to the site. Sorry to hear your CT-17 is having trouble. Your symptoms are fairly typical. The CT-17 is known to have some poor solder joints on the display board. The display board is actually two boards sandwiched together. Several studs are used to hold them together and to pass signals from one board to the next. For some reason these studs were soldered in place separate from the components. Often the joints will oxidize and provide poor/intermittent connections. Add this to all the 30 year old small caps that may or may not be bad and you've got a major puzzle on your hands. There is a terrifying level of disassembly necessary just to get to the display board. Beware. Some folks have had success focusing just on the display board solder joints and replacing the caps on the display board. Others, not so much. There are a lot of caps in the CT-17. In any case, it's not for the the novice. You may want to consider sending it to a pro. Search around in the preamp sections of the site here. You will find several posts about the CT-17. 3

Jeff, i have a ct-17 as well and the display is dim. i have disassembled the unit and have extracted the display board. i inspected all the soler joints and they appear fine. i have also tested the display by supplying voltage from my power supply unit to the display board and to the solder joints on the board and the display lights up nice and bright. i am thinking it is the capacitors on the power supply board. where di you order yours from when you replaced them and do you have a list of what you ordered? i have the service manual with the parts numbers, but short of looking at each individual capacitor and getting the info off of them i don't see a list of the capacitor specs on the schematics. any help would be appreciated. reagrds, Frank 1

The values for the power supply capacitors are shown in the schematic. It is always best to look at the capacitors in the unit before you order. There are often differences between the schematic and the actual unit on your workbench. You also need to measure diameters, heights and lead spacing. The power supply of the CT-17 runs hot so it is wise to use 105C caps. 4

Rob 6,735 Posted July 30 Posted July 30 I have a CT17 I picked up off eBay over a year ago as a parts not working unit so this will be an interesting topic. I've never plugged it in or tried to fire it up and I don't have a remote so let the fun begin. 1
