Yesterday I satisfied my 20 year lust/craving for Infinity Kappa speakers. I have been looking for a set of nines, but they are harder to come by than ALIIIs... So I seattled on a Gorgeous set of 8.1s that were a local p/u about 3 hours fom home.

Hooked them up tonight, and I must say, definitely worth the wait:-)

However... Talk about power HOGGS... they forced my 500t into shutdown mode!! In the 500t's defense, I WAS pushing it pretty hard. Tomorrow I'm going to slap them with my Rich P 1.0t mkII - that should keep them happy, and if not, I'll feed them with TFM 55x & 35x bi- amped.

A special thanks to Gene for the advice and council on Kappas! I'll post some pics tomorrow:-). 20 years... Sometimes, good things DO come to those who wait:-)

Nice score Mark. I've had a sweet spot for Infinity speakers since the late 70's.

I only took the one picture with my Iphone - I will shoot another of them pegging my 500t meters, before I hook the 1.0t mkII up.

Nice I had a pair of those and still kick myself in the ass for getting rid of them, especially for the price I got them for. Yes they do take plenty of high current power, not as much as the Infinity's I have now but they still need a lot.
The Kappa 9's were notorious for frying even the best amps because they would dip below 1 ohm load so unless you can find a really beefy and amp I would take them off your list, they dont really sound any better than the Kappa 8's anyways with a sub IMO.

I take it you never got to biamp those Kappa 9a's with 4 Silver 7t monoblocks? And I've had a chance to hear those 8.1's on a Krell KSA amp. Those 8.1's have a little more thump than the original Kappa 8's but the Kappa 9"s are in a whole class of thier own if you have the room and the power to boot. Arnie designed those speakers perfectly.

The Kappa 9's test an amp.  They are the Gandolf of LOTH.  Most amps end up like the Balrok "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!!!!!"

I would run them with a Carver M1.0t which is enough of an amp to run them IMHO.

I never owned a pair of the kappa 9's or regular 8 series but I have heard them both, I just owned the 8.1's. The 9's I heard were Bi amped with a pair of a McIntosh amps. They sounded great, the regular 8 series I almost bought and he was running them with a m1.5t and they sounded great as well be just to my ear just a little bit less bass. I didnt get them because he was asking too much and would not come down. But it did make me go get my M1.5t. Then latter on I came across the deal on my 8.1's.
Latter runs of the 9's were easier on amps so I hear.

these were mine, arg why did I sell these?

Yeah I had a pair of Kappa 8's in high school powered by 1 M-4.0t. The bass response on the original series was optimal when the speakers were 3 to 4 ft from the wall. I did run a test on them upstairs in the living room at my parents house. The bass response was way better on hard wood floors than in my bedroom in the basement with carpet. Didn't have enough room to bring them out more than 2 ft if I remember.

Nice! Noticed the left channel was out gunning the right channel? Or was that camera angle playing tricks on my eyes?
