  1. Dave, I agree with you, the Magnepan IIIas are very easy to biamp. Enjoying my IIIas with the MiniDSP. Sorry to hear where you are for business. I just came back from a three day business trip at Honolulu. Lot warmer there.
  2. I would second the MiniDSP. That is what I am currently using and sounds much better than the ART CX311 it replaced. Unfortunately, I experienced issues with the ART due to the adapters needed to convert all the inputs/outputs to unbalanced. I found that the adapters contributed to an intermittent stray signal that maxed out my left upper channel which in turn slightly damaged my Magnepan speaker. Luckily, I know how to repair the Magnepan and is working fine now. Having been using the MiniDSP for several weeks now, all I can say is that I should have done it this way first and not go with the pro crossovers that you can easily find. Not having all those adapters I am sure didn't help with the sound quality. The MiniDSP is very easy to program and can easily be tailored to your speaker's needs. I have the ART currently up for sale which is only a year old. That tells you how much I like the MiniDSP so far.
  3. Welcome back. I am probably new to you. But the people here have been great. Met a great person here who is local to me who MKII'd two of Carver M-1.0ts and a M-500t for me. Loving every minute I listen to them. Because of the people here, they made me a Carver addict. Just ask my wife. I now own a couple of tape decks, CD players, a C-1 and a stereo receiver, all by Carver. The journey continues......

    It's Here !!!

    Nice!
  5. Two pairs of Magnepan IIIas One pair of Magnepan MMGWs One Eminent Technology LFT-XII center channel One set of Mirage Nanosat/Subwoofer system One set of Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble IV sub/sat system One Velodyne HGS-12 Series II subwoofer One pair of Celestion Little Ones The rest would be a Magnavox and a Sony portable boomboxes if those count.
  6. Probably the best I have heard is a set of Soundlabs but the ones I own are a set of Magnepans which are pretty close.
  7. My Pioneer Elite AV receiver does the same.
  8. Both of you sound like my neighbor who is currently using four Genesis subs to even out the room modes. Having my subs in stereo seems to even out the room nodes. I may have to try running the subs off one cable and see if I hear a difference. It has been an interesting experiment so far. Time for more testing.
  9. Hi Everyone, Because of an impending kitchen remodel, I had to take my Mirage sub/sat system out to make room for the remodel. Now I am using the Mirage Omni S-8 powered subwoofer for the left channel and my Velodyne HGS-12 Series II powered subwoofer for the right channel. Seems to bring the sound stage into balance with my Magnepan IIIas. There is definitely a cleaner, more defined low bass sound. I guess I am surprised since the Mirage is a relatively inexpensive subwoofer compared to my Velodyne. I was under the assumption that the Mirage couldn't keep up with the Velodyne based on specs and price, but it seems it is without issue. Maybe my hearing isn't what it used to be to pick up the differences between these two subs. Anyone else on this forum using two subs for stereo?
  10. The SMGa specs at the treble the same as the current MMGWs which sell new for $325 but you can find used for around $200. I have a set of MMGWs and the highs don't sound that airy compared to a set of MMGs or certainly to my 3 series Magnepans with the true ribbon tweeters. It is correct that you will be spending a few hours and like me, over the course of a couple of days to do the rebuild kit. You are probably better off depending on your room size to pick up a pair of MMGs on the used market. I have seen like new ones in my area run from $300-$400. Since they are much newer, there is less chance of delamination and they use a quasi-ribbon to extend the highs and give additional air and presence that the SMGas can't match.
  11. Here is information about the KG4s from the Klipsch site:http://www.klipsch.com/kg-4/details I used to own the KG2s and they were great sounding speakers. I used a Yamaha A-500 integrated amp to power them.
  12. Hashy, Thanks for taking the time to completely explain the new classifications, who is who, and how things are now determined. Great job!
  13. Hawaii Five-O
  14. Chris, welcome to the forum from a member living in Silicon Valley. Sounds like you and your family have enjoyed your Carver equipment a long while.
  15. Wayne, I am glad to hear that you were able to find a set of Magnepans to your liking. As you know, Maggies need room to breath. So as long as you have them out far enough from the back and side walls, you should be able to experience the magic that they are known for. I use a Velodyne HGS-12 myself for the lowest octave with my IIIas. I can see a set of Grant Mye Stands paired with you Maggies very soon. I was very surprised at the increased resolution and bass response when I installed the Mye Stands to my IIIas. It will be the same for your 1.6s. Knowing you, I am certain you could make your own set of stands to reinforce the frame of the 1.6s. Enjoy them and if you have any questions, let me know.

Well, my Velodyne is up for the task!
  17. Listening to my free Slacker and Pandora accounts on my Magnepan system currently sounds fine with me.
  18. Bob, welcome! You will quickly find that the people here are great.
  19. Wrf, Where are you located in the SF Bay Area? I am in Fremont. I have an extra set of MMGWs you could try. Won't sound as good as a set of MMGs and they too have the same issues with a narrow sweet spot. But they will give you a real good taste of the midrange of bigger Magnepans. I see the ads on Craigslist you are looking at. If you are set at purchasing Magnepans, there probably will be a set of MMGs locally that will pop up in good condition. Just have to be patient.
  20. You can always try the 60-day trial with a new pair of MMGs from Magnepan. If you don't like them, you can return them. Or if you can find a decent pair of 1.6s in your area, I would start there as well.
  21. Next time I go to Fry's or Best Buy, I will have to check out these speakers. Kind of reminds me of the Cambridge Soundworks Model 17s I used to use in my TCBY franchise I owned many years ago.
  22. Must be a running theme here, Sgt. Peppers on 8-track was my first album I bought. CD- Phillips demo disc called "Here the Light on Phillips". Cassette- Herbie Hancock, "Future Shock". Mostly I copied albums I had onto cassette to play in the car. LP- Foreigner, "Double Vision".
