  1. I used to be in the hi-res camp and wasted a lot of money downloading 96k/24bit tracks from HD Tracks. My mind changed when I took a hi-res challenge from Mark Waldrep aka Dr AIX. He was a proponent of Hi-Res and thought his test would affirm his claim that hi-res was superior. The results of his test showed otherwise. The recording and playback of music is unbelievably complex. I think there is a tendency to focus on one part of that chain (in this case sampling rates and bit depth) and to ignore all the other variables that go into creating great sounding recordings.
  2. Welcome to the Carver journey. Warning, it can be addictive.
  3. I enjoy multichannel music, yet I lament the fact that there is so little content and the disks are so expensive. I finally tracked this one down and it sounds absolutely fantastic. It feels as if I'm sitting on stage with the band.

    Get Back

Was it anyone else or just me? I couldn't get past how they dubbed audio that did not fit the picture. With the mismatched lip flap, at times I felt like I was watching a Saturday afternoon Kung Fu movie. Also, it made me wonder how did they decide which audio to dub over the images. Anyway I made it through the first episode in a couple of sessions. I might go back and try the next 2. My .02 being a casual Beatles fan.
  5. Bumping an old thread here- I never did pull the trigger on replacing my old Yammy receiver, but I am very tempted by this Emotiva processor. https://emotiva.com/collections/processors/products/xmc-1 Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on this unit. Also, IIRC didn't Bob Carver have some affiliation with Emotiva?
  6. Regarding the dialogue of "Tenet": the production sound mixer was two time academy award winner Willy Burton. He is a rock star in that world. The mushy dialogue seems to be a choice of Christopher Nolan. I don't know to what end he does this, but he has done it in the past, viz., Interstellar. I read that he even objected to theatre operators trying to use corrective EQ to make the dialogue more understandable.
  7. Passages like this is why I can't read your posts at work. I was recording sound during a long take and saw that you had posted and wisely thought to myself that I had better not indulge - fearing that a hearty belly laugh might ensue. "Treacle-laden whore" has been added to my lexicon.
  8. Damn it Mark! Those are the speakers that sent me down the NHT rabbit hole. When you auditioned those for me, I knew that I had to have them. Since that day, I've acquired two pairs of 2.5is, one pair of 2.5s, two pairs of 1.5s, an Ac1 and AC3 center channels and a pair of 2.9s. And I know of a pair of 3.3s near me for $1,200 that tempt me on a regular basis. I know that I don't need them, but they are such unicorns...OCCD combined with OCNHTD...
  9. It should be stored at a constant cool temperature for sure. This post was not targeted at you Mark, but I would never put ice in Isosceles. That being said, if you enjoy your fine wine with ice, go for it. If it's my wine - not happening.
  10. This brings to mind when I serve a fine red wine and the guest requests ice cubes to be dunked into the exquisite appelation. I, without hesitation, reclaim said vino and return to the guest a new glass brimming with ice and a wine that can only be properly aged in a box.
  11. I'm glad this thread popped back up again. I love finding new music - especially reference material. I sampled the Lydia Ainsworth track "floating dream" that mark linked and I immediately bought 3 of her albums. I've decided that my unemployment money should not only pay for groceries; it should also pay for music (and gun parts). However, I did not buy from Amazon since I was disgusted by their treatment of Parler.
  12. I apologize in advance to all you Doors fans out there. The biggest axxhole in the music business that I ever met was Ray Manzarek. I did a shoot at his house probably 25 years ago. He was on camera to talk about, of course, Jim Morrison. There was a technical glitch that was my fault which would have caused us to restart the interview and re-do about 10 mins of filming. Instead of being cool about it, he ran upstairs like a petulant child and refused to be interviewed any more. On the other side of the spectrum Taylor Swift has hugged me every time I've seen her (for a total of twice)
  13. Great idea Kevin. I suggest Chris Jones - Roadhouses and Automobiles.
  14. Got around to removing the gooey mess of the old NHT diffraction strips. Thanks to Mark @Daddyjt they are now refreshed.
  15. Good for you for reading that one. She makes critical race theory palatable and understandable for the masses. For counterpoint, I would suggest Eric Lindsay. He is quite competent on the topic.
  16. Sweet. My strips are pretty deteriorated. if I remember correctly the strips on your 2.9s were aftermarket.
  17. I always preferred the fantasy sequel "Debbie Does Dishes"
  18. I remember reading an article about this movie by humorist Dave Barry. He said they must have made the cinematic decision to strap the camera to the head of a hyperactive seal.
  19. Dennis, The last M500tmkII, that you had listed, taunted me relentlessly until I eventually bought it. This new black faced specimen is calling me even louder. However, having little to no income since March, I can't even entertain pulling the trigger on this one. I hope she finds a good home. -PhilDent
  20. Mark, now that I think back, you found the first pair and I enabled you back with the second. 😁 Apart from their awesome sound, the best thing about the 2.9s is that wifey didn't notice when I swapped them into the system - replacing the similar looking, but smaller, 2.5i's.
  21. Funny you should mention this. The seller I bought your pair from contacted me out of the blue. He's willing to sell me his "bedroom pair of 2.9s for $500" IIRC, when I bought Mark's @Daddyjtspeakers, the guy said his bedroom speakers were not in good cosmetic shape. Since he he gave me the pick of the 2 pairs of 2.9s in the living room that looked in decent shape, I felt no need to venture into his bedroom...
  22. Regarding Electrostatics, For a while I was running a pair of Innersound Eros (mkIII?) They sound nice, but are big and power hungry. I think the big downside to these speakers is that they have a very narrow sweet spot ~11". In order to enjoy these speakers to their full potential, you can't even think about moving your head. If you're willing to sit in the sweet spot, have lots of power on hand, and not concerned about WAF, then an Electrostatic like this could be a viable option for you. Where are you located? I had the impression that you were in the UK.
  23. Thanks Kev for the heads up. I should have shopped around, but I've been wanting some new music so I jumped on it.
