    Going on generalizations here, the unit may be going into protection mode - which will prevent the relay from engaging. A number of conditions can cause this including excess DC offset. Could be a failure in the power amp section. A look in the manual for this unit is no help...

    I have heard the 1.7's with a 4BST. Pair of SVS subs covering 95Hz and down. Once the placements were sorted out - and that took a while - breathtaking!

    E-stat's are journey well worth taking. You may love them, you may hate them but until you try them, you'll never know. Enjoy the ride!

    As for the capacitance loading you need to consider the cables between the cart and the preamp. These can often add upwards of 80-100pF on their own. Start at the lowest available preamp setting and give it a listen, then up the setting. Go with what sounds best (to you) not an arbitrary number and you should be happy.
