Since I'm in on the Carverfest speaker buy I've been looking for a set of subs to go with them. Early on I picked up a Definitive Technology ProSub 800 at a thrift shop for 15 bucks. It has a 8" woofer and a 8" passive radiator, self powered with a 300 watt plate amp. Yesterday I found a matching one for a good deal on Craigs list. Looked brand new.
Tonight I made up some 36" speaker leads to go from my DCM TimeFrame 600 speakers to the subs
. I had bought some GLS Audio locking banana plugs a while back and this was the first time I had a reason to need them. I like and recommend them to anyone building a set of cables. Fully machined out of brass and gold plated to boot. Very good quality. Back on subject.
So I hooked them up, set the crossover on the sub's to 150HZ, or the max. Now I'm feeding the sub's the same signal as the DCM's so the DCM's will still play as low as they go at this point. I'm not going through the sub's crossovers, just adding to the DCM's output. Turned the sub's volume control roughly half way up on both units and went looking for ..............DSOTM. It's my go to test CD.
I must be close to where the volume should be set as the sub's are not standing out, just adding something that was missing.  They seem to blend in very nicely.
I never realized that the heartbeat continued through the whole song, it always just got lost in the other music playing on top of it.. I'm hearing things I never did before.
Now I have nothing to compare these ProSubs to but at this point I'm very happy. I had called DefTech the other day to talk to one of the tech's about my plan. He told me that what I wanted to do should work out fine, that the ProSub's were very musical.
Last week I ordered DSOTM on SACD, it will be my first SACD. Can't wait to hear it on my upgraded system.
Anyway, now I understand what all the fuss is about. Can't wait to get my ribbons.

Great post. When I heard the Fest speakers, it was with a Sunfire sub. I know I will have to pick up a subwoofer, but the Sunfires might be a little out of my reach. I like to hear about some other potential sub's to pick up.

I'm getting the same from an Energy ESW-8 (Owned by Klipsch) I just got for the surround set. I'll also have it as a sub for my Maggies when I get them fixed. Can't wait. Right now with the 250W Panasonic 3-ways the room shakes when the volume is turned up. Wow, big difference.  My go-to bass test CD is Bob Marley - Legend; also the late tracks on Beastie Boys Liscensed to Ill have some good reverse bass that will also test your system.

What I don't understand on the Sunfire subs is the wattage ratings. One of them puts out like 2700 watts! Now I understand about having overhead in your amps but at what levels will you need that much power? My current system is a C11 to a PM600 driving the DCM's and the self powered subs. I am playing this LOUD! It sounds fantastic. Yes, I'd like to get into a M500-T for the ribbons someday just to have additional overhead as the PM600 is rated at 200W at 8 ohms. My DCM's are 6 ohm nominal so since my amp is rated at 300W at 4 ohms I figure I have about 250W at my disposal. And yes, I get the leds dancing near the top. I don't know where my cat hides. LOL
Is anybody else running ProSubs?

Keep your overhead low and your headroom hi. The other way around and you can't afford anything. :-)

Bill you just touched the tip of the iceberg with those Subwoofers.

The Sunfire subs have a long-throw driven speaker and a passive radiator. I'm thinking the long-throw requires more wattage because it needs to travel much further in the same amount of time (thus requiring more power). To get it to react with enough speed the coils would probably have more windings and carry higher current than a standard driver.

Have you seen the surrounds on the sunfire driver? The rubber is heavy like a tire. Not at all like anything I had seen before.Very rigid.Pushing on the cone like on a normal driver won't even move it.Bet it takes a lot of power to make it move.I would sure like to see what they look like under power.

Yes, welcome to sub-land!eusa_dance.gif
We're lucky having a dense population, so much gear lands on Craigslist and in the thrift stores and pawn shops in the Philly area. We still have to get up to Dan's Sound Room. (Bill lives about 15 miles from me)

I'm going to have to talk you out of those Def-Tech's, though. Special project! I've got bigger subs by PSB, JBL, Mirage, Klipsch, etc. Enjoy those for now. Let me know when you are ready to trade up.
Just don't sell or trade those to someone else! emwink.gif

Yes, excellent disc. So is Wish You Were Here in SACD. I listen to both when I have HT set up.

The Sunfire subs have to overcome the physical limitation of box size to reproduce a given note that would be much easier with a large enclosure. Anyone who has had one has seen it "dance" across an uncarpeted floor~

Yes, they can dance on wood floors. Oh, yes they can, I know they can, can, Yes, they can great gosh almighty, Oh, yes, they can, I know they can, can.
If they have adhesive backed rubber feet like my Super Junior did, the little rubber feet will migrate on the bottom, leaving behind an adhesive trail, reminiscent of slug mucous trails. Clean up & reapply.

Lol you're right about that, they will chase the dog around but I took some 2x2 and built a square stand to sit under my Sunfire Sig 13", put 3 spikes under it and attached the sub with blu tack and it stays in place quite well now.

I just EQ'd my room with the sub running; wow, I had it turned way too high, and the crossover point was too high. If you like more bass easy to just leave the sub up and don't EQ, but for a flat response you will want to EQ your room. The bass notes are still there, just more subtle.

I will second that. On an E110, the whole house has a heartbeat and I get complaints about it.

If I play the SACD on my 2.1 system will it sound proper? I thought it would work on both srereo and 5.1. Don't tell me I pissed my money away. I have a Pioneer Elite DV-79AVi player.

There should be a 2 channel track OR a 2 channel downmix option on the player.
