Welcome, @Johnnyhigh5, glad you found us. The schematics we have are posted in the library. Sunfire docs are tricky..., they were never released, so we rely on donors that come across them, to share them here for the library. In addition, Sunfire had many in-production revisions, so not all units match the schematics that we do have in our library. After you do a bit more activity here on TCS, you'll be able to post pictures (it's a thing we do here to prevent spam). Pictures of the board where you are observing damage would be helpful. I am not a tech, but an enabler..., On other suggestion is that replacing burned up parts is important, but not as important as finding the underlying reason for these part to be fried. It may be the fuse/foil - but likely something else that made the previous owner put the foil in there in the first place..., something was causing that fuse to fail. That is the issue that needs to be diagnosed and corrected as well - as I'm sure you know with your years of experience. Please post a picture as soon as you can.

Introduction and question M-500T
AndrewJohn replied to earthNZ's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
Hey Nick, You're part of our community now..., even if you don't win "this" particular auction..., there will be another offering. BTW, I am guessing??? the auction is on ..., Ebay NZ? If so, look into Sniping the deal, to ensure you get it. I use gixen, you can find it at www.gixen.com..., And if you don't get this 500t (I love the 500t's big meters...) any of the primary amps from Bob Carver will be wonderful for you to acquire, and this is the community to engage to share your journey with the experience. -
Introduction and question M-500T
AndrewJohn replied to earthNZ's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
hello Nick, @earthNZ. Reading up on the LST 1 speakers..., users that have them say they like power..., and the M500t should give it to them at stock rating. Since the m500t is rare, in NZ..., if I were in your shoes, I'd buy it (if the price is right)... Audio hobby is a journey..., not a destination..., you might find you want to get the upgrade to MkII, you might find you want different speakers..., you might find..., 😉 who knows. ...worst case, if the price is right on a rare Carver item in your region, you can flip it. Reading on some of the other audio forums, they point out that not enough wpc for those speakers is problematic, for some who have experienced blown Crown amps. Carver amps are generally more robust than many. And with 300wpc, as @3M_Audio wrote, that should be in the realm of need/demand for the speakers (I have not experienced AR LST's..., only reading on the internet about specs.) Interestingly, a post on Hoffman's forum, wrote that the LST 1s have blown amps, pushing 150wpc to them. They are rated (according to hifiengine.com) at 64wpc with a 4ohm impedance. my thinking on that is to share that Bob Carver himself pointed out that ratings are not always what they seem..., meaning that "speakers blow more often from not enough wpc, than from too many wpc." Clean high-power amplifier power is what speakers drink like water..., keyword "clean" meaning more distortion from the amp, the more likely your 65wpc-rated speakers will have issues. Bob Carver amps are known for their clean solid state power. ...now, if the used amp you are getting is not working, or needs service (it is over 30 years old - and may be stock)..., it would be good to have it looked at, checked for out of spec consumable components (like capacitors of the era, they are consumables..., and worth recapping your amp with modern caps, which will make it better than new!) Good luck on your journey..., and hoping you post more on this thread on your system once you dive in. We love pictures! -

Hi, hello, how are you?!
AndrewJohn replied to w33rd0h's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
Welcome @w33rd0h. Glad you found us, and a satisfying pair of Amazing Speakers... 😉 Send @Sea a PM here on the TCS website forum. He is a semi-regular here. Alternatively, you might find him on Facebook, his name is Ed Atkins. Again, glad you found us. -
New Member with a MXR-130 question
AndrewJohn replied to Alfa_Metal's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
Welcome @Alfa_Metal, glad you found us! Many parts in older units are, or already have, transitioned to "unobtanium." You're on the right path, to look/search for it as you are. Occasionally, you might find a parts unit, or a unit parted out, with the parts listed, on eBay. Take care that you don't end up with (or spend too much on) parts that might be counterfeit. Again, glad you found us. -
New member new issue
AndrewJohn replied to Andy Judd's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
Welcome, @Andy Judd, glad you found us. I agree with the sentiment above, that receiver was designed/manufactured well after Bob Carver left Carver Corp. It might not be worth servicing, as the cost to service it will be higher than the value. Put the money you would spend to fix it toward the better Carver Gear with Bob Carver's fingerprints on it..., I prefer separates, like a C-1 preamp, a TX-11a tuner, and any of the beloved amps, like the TFM series (TFM-45 comes to mind), or am m series, like a m1.0t, m1.5t, or m4.0t. If you are dead set on a receiver, the early receivers like the MRX-130 ro MRX-150 or 2000, or later receivers, like an HR742 ro HR 752. I assume you are using this for two channel stereo listening..., if you are using it for surround, I'd consider something new, with HDMI, like Marantz, or Denon..., Best for you on your Carver Journey. Oh, no worries, lots of folks get exposed to Carver on some of the lesser models..., they learn about the potential of the components that Bob Carver had a hand in designing..., and never look back. Again, glad you found us. -
A newbie to the group

Welcome @Clarence, glad you found us! -
Agreed. And, probably a good number who listen to Radio, over their www.Wxxx.com website, which most FM stations (and some AM?) have opted to build, just like TV stations have built smartphone apps, to continue to reach their audience, albeit, through a new medium of broadcast. For me, I still listen to my tuners, Carver TX-2, TX-11a, and TX-11b (in my systems). Office has a TX-2, which get's the most play.

Excellent Album! Great to see you stop in, Rod! Don't be a stranger! 😉

Welcome, @Sach, glad you found us. There's a cleaner/solvent called "DeOxit" which is what people use to address balance knob corrosion/oxidization, which could be (as already stated) the cause of your issue. Use the SEARCH at the upper right of the home page, here on this site, and you will find many threads on how to clean pots (potentiometers) - the electronics component on the backside of the knob. This may be more effort than you want to take..., cleaning a pot should be a small task, with a low cost, if you can find a tech that will just do that for you locally. Always let the solvent dry overnight after conditioning before powering up the unit. Again, Welcome, and glad you found us here on the best #1 fan site for Carver owners.

Welcome, @Tallguy, glad you found us. Many of us love the Sunfire Signature. Like you, I have more turntables than I can possibly use..., the bit rotation. Again, welcome. PS., we love pictures! Post your rig sometime.

I agree with @3M_Audio, every pair of Klipsch speakers, many models, I've heard, sound just awesome with Carver gear driving them. Bob Carver often said: "Speakers get blown by amplifiers with too low power and high distortion..., high power amps with low distortion will give the most out of any pair of quality speakers." I would not worry about over-driving your speakers. My observation is that clean sound will result from your Carver gear, at volume's all the way up to the point that it will be too loud for your ears to handle (clean, clear and good sounding, but too loud).

Welcome, @Jimbo_NC, glad you found us. We love pictures..., post an image or two of your system, when you can. Lots of information and helpful folks online here. Again, glad you found us!

Welcome, @brjoon1021. Glad you found us. There are several members here who use and love the DLT unit. As @Kurt said, the processor loop on a preamp that has it, is the best way to go. If you don't have a "processor loop" in your preamp setup, you can use the "Tape Loop", using the tape monitoring button which puts the DTL inline simulating a tape deck, and you set the preamp to "monitor" what is coming through that loop, processed by the DTL. What kind of preamp are you using?

Thanks for Having me
AndrewJohn replied to Getahobby's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
Welcome, @Getahobby. Glad you found us. And, yes, "This is the Place to Be!" for Carver fans. Regarding rack handles..., the first suggestion is to go to the person you acquired the 760 from, and ask them if they may still have them, hidden in a drawer..., or? Serioiusly. I find old manuals, original boxes, and even handles this way on gear I have acquired. The other thing would be to go to Ebay, and set up a search for "Carver Handles" in electronics, and have it send you a notification. It's a long-shot and takes patience. They are unobtainium as far as new - but they do come up on ebay from time to time. Also, take a caliper or ruler, and measure the vertical height of the faceplate. And take a picture of the bolt-holes for attachment points on each side. Carver audio gear varied from component to component, and not all handles that "look" right, will fit. But knowing your dimensions and bolt-hole patter, will help you find the right handles and rack ears. Again, Welcome! And glad you found us. -
I fit the same description. However, I'm cautious about throwing money away, when the right fix is the right way to go. One and Done, AND a warranty..., vs a slow bleeding of the contents of my wallet. (If you fix JUST the issue to get the amp running, the warranty anywhere will be on that ONE part, not any new issues that develop due to age.) Fully refreshed/restored by www.NelionAudio.com, who Bob Carver has sanctioned/authorized as THE repair center for Carver gear, and visits here on this forum occasionally as @Nahash5150, get listed on Ebay regularly for $750 - $1000. those are "listing prices"..., Compare that to a TFM-42 amp, used, not serviced selling for ~$300 on Ebay, sent to Hersey, MI for $57 each way via FedEx ($114 total), and the cost of Restore ($390) and "AudioPhile Package" options ($175) posted on www.NelionAudio.com for the TFM-42 and you get a cost of $979. Of course, finding a TFM-42 on Ebay, has its risks. Add the cost of shipping and insurance..., and the risk of some boob packaging it so it arrives in destroyed condition, and the costs go up. I don't know what you paid for the set-up (but assuming it was a great deal..., just to reiterate, I'd be willing to consider taking it off your hands for what you paid for it... 😉 ) Plug your cost in the equation above to get an idea of your potential value for a truly audiophile setup. As you noted, you would only need to get some great speakers. I may sell you my Carver Amazings or AL-III+ (I have too many quality speakers for my setups...) As for the C-16, they regularly go for $600 to $800 on Ebay, unrefreshed. They are desired, and kind of rare, compared to the Carver C-1/C-11 preamps. Their value goes down if they have a "purplish" hue to the faceplate due to exposure to UV and/or ammonia-based cleaners. I share these numbers as optimistic..., and it takes patience to find buyers to pay that - HOWEVER, if they are your system, playing music for your ears to enjoy, that's how I would value the units you have. Good luck in your journey... Oh, BTW, yes, Vernon Hills is a 5 hour drive to Hersey, MI. It's a whole Saturday..., made worse by the crossing and construction along 294 through Indiana. I've driven it (to Grand Rapids) several times..., For me, I like to leave very early in the morning, beat the commuter traffic and crazy drivers that seem to botch the trip in that bottleneck around 7AM. And, the return, then, is after the 5-6PM rush hour..., It's very scenic along the Michigan coast, and my wife and I have done it in two days, just to stop along the way and enjoy the drive, taking the PITA factor out of the equation. OR, you could go wild (I've never done it) and drive to Milwaukee, and take the ferry across to Muskegon..., Google Maps says that too, is a 5.5 hour drive from Vernon Hills. The forum members here look forward to what you decide to do! 😉

Welcome, @BBJames, glad you found us. You have scored a great deal. If you want to let it go for what you paid for it, send me a PM. I live in the west suburbs, St. Charles/Geneva/Elgin area. Where (city) are you located? Maybe were close? HOWEVER, you should really get to hear this setup..., you will be amazed. And, it will be the beginning of your Carver audiophile journey. That amp is going to blow you away! OK, to answer your question..., just to get you on your journey, there is ONE place I suggest you take your TFM-42. This shop will identify the broken part, replace it, and charge you for labor and parts. They DO NOT (typically) do full recap and restoration..., which means that a week after you get it home, put it in your system, and are enjoying the setup, it could very well have a new issue. Any gear 35+ years old have consumable parts (electrolytic capacitors, for example) and are subject to adjustments and service bulletins (service bulletins may or may not have been applied in the amp's history) that will make the amp perform and sound better than new, and originally sounded out of the box back in the day when it was NEW! That place is a place called Deltronics. www.deltronics.com. They have TWO locations DO NOT go to the one downtown Chicago..., Go to the one in Woodridge, it's right off the freeway in a little strip mall. ASK FOR MIKE - call ahead and make an appointment. Mike is the only guy who has been around long enough and knows Carver gear and this amplifier. He's modest and a nice guy and has repaired a few Carver pieces for me. [Why Mike? the remaining techs in the two shops mostly repair band equipment, guitar amps, keyboards, synthesizers, etc..., and don't have experience repairing Carver gear and its unique design. Mike at Deltronics willl find the issue, repair/replace the one single part for you, and send you home with a working TFM-42, but unless you ask for a full recap and restoration, you have the risk of bringing it back again, when the next age-related thing fails. OK, the logic here is that you could spend as much, or more, with this strategy. Your time, travel/mileage, expense can be minimized. FedEx or drive (it's doable in a day) to Hersey, MI and give the amp to Nelion for a full restoration. Why? Get it done once, and done completely, fully. The overall cost will be worth it. Check the numbers, compare it to $100/hr labor for diagnosis and repair, plus parts, and you'll see what I mean. Again, great to meet another Carver fan in the Chicago-land area. I hope our paths cross.

AndrewJohn replied to Horseshoez's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
Welcome, @Horseshoez, glad you found us. Send the amp to @Nelion. Amp's ship well, when packed well. Contact @Circuits & Concepts, here on this TheCarverSite, with a direct message, or on Ebay (same name as an ebay seller). The tuner experience you describe is common, and I believe he has a part that fixes it. If you are handy with a soldering iron, and have the interest, it may be easy for you to do. Les, at Circuits and Concepts is very helpful with instruction, and may even give you advice on where to send it if you feel you don't have the skill to attack this fix. As for the turntable, these are fairly simple devices..., and I'd say, that of the list you have for restoration, the one thing that is missing is "lubrication"..., the bearing that the spindle sits on, has grease that turns to goo, and even sometimes hardens..., making any other repairs moot. It's got to spin freely, before the motor and belt are going to make it play. I'd first go to the Thoren's Facebook Group. It's pretty comprehensive, and has a LOT of resources (people) that know where to get parts..., like the counterweight you are missing. Lots of those parts are also available on Ebay..., for the Thorens line. That's a great TT, and worth putting back into commission now that your Carver journey is starting up again. We hope you kick back, and stay a while, and keep telling us about your restoration journey, the music you like, and more..., oh, and yes, we LOVE pictures!! 😉
