  1. That is the proverbial dilemma of speaker designers..., they can model the physics in a number of digital modeling computer programs..., a good friend of mine in our local audio group here did his master's thesis at SIU on speaker design. The speakers he designed for his final project sound great - but not as good as the Paradigm towers he has in the same room... (that's another story). For his degree in speaker design, he had to finish the pair by the end of the semester - but if it were a commercial operation, there would be several iterations before the design and physical specifications were final. Yes, it's "what they end up with"..., but I would ensure the statement didn't imply they punted after the first iteration and said "good enough." I wasn't there, of course, but great engineering cycles design, modeling, prototype, test, revise, repeat, cycles - including speaker design, then final production. I'm guessing that's what you meant. I just feel that the Kappa series speakers had more than build it and "ship-it" approach. I think somewhat differently about EPI designs..., 😉 but that and all this, is "my opinion." YMMV.
  2. I came across these, today. Pretty good wisdom. "We suffer more in our imagination than in reality." Seneca. "It's never too late to become what you might have been." George Elliott "Our life is what our thoughts make it." Marcus Aurelius "Thinking is difficult, that's why most people judge." Karl Jung "Care about what other people think, and you will always be their prisoner." Lao Tsu "A fool is known by his speech, a wise man by silence." Pythagoras "If you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room." Confucious "The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear." Rumi
  3. I'm not a Tech, as I've said over and over..., I know enough to be dangerous. And, generally, have "some" level of "understanding" of electronics concepts..., I just don't know how to use that understanding like the qualified techs here do. I thank all of you techs for your patience in helping me learn and grow. OK, having said that, I found this 4-year-old video from Axiom Audio, and found it to be exceptional in digging in and explaining "impedance", and further to understand what this means to speakers, how speakers are measured, what "nominal" means, and even how "amps see impedance" and why it matters. Heretofore before watching this guy explain impedance, I have found myself lost on one-sentence explanations that were presented by Circuit City and Best Buy salespeople, and internet know-it-alls on so many forums (Not TCS, though 😉 ). At about 15:00, he explains the issues of mis-matched amps to speakers, heat, and protection or damage. It made a lot of things make sense..., in my feeble brain. Let me know what you think after watching this guy..., if you feel like it.
  4. Ditto, "post count" is for "contributing to threads"..., the "Status Update" puts a note on your own member profile..., use that if you are going to be unavailable or "out of the office", or want to announce something in your life..., or ? Generally, not many use that feature of TCS. But to be sure, that section is an "update" that you want to share about you - and I'm not sure that it is even searched using the search function (don't quote me on that) - General Audio and other topics found in the Forums are the best way to contribute - and increase post count to advance status.
  5. Welcome @CALamb, glad you found us. m1.0t amps are known to hum..., how loud is your hum? Audible, yes, but across the room loud, or up-close loud... I'm not a tech, so I can't comment on fixes, or potential other issues - someone else here may chime in. But do tell, how loud is the hum? can you hear it when you are playing music through the amp to your speakers at regular listening levels? Again, Welcome! there's a lot of info here. You might also try using the Search at the upper right on the home page for other threads on m1.0t and hum issues, experiences and fixes.
  6. Welcome back @ferrari, glad you found your way back..., I think I may remember you..., I've been here for about 10 years..., There are others that have been here longer, that may also remember... Can't wait to see your system in a picture. Again, glad you are back!
  7. Welcome @Parmaniac. So glad you found us. One of these VTCC's just sold on Ebay, for about $1500, w/o the phono pre. They do come around. Also watch for one on USAudioMart.com.
  8. Welcome, @DougN, so glad you found us. Can't wait to see you post pictures of that gear here. We LOVE pictures.
  9. My wife showed me a video yesterday of Madonna in concert recently..., I had to look away, and we both agreed, it was over the top. Saw this today, and it applies.
  10. Welcome to the site, @Chris Trimble, glad you found us. There's a wealth of information here. Bummer you had all your gear stolen. And, I agree with @wrf to be cautious on posting your identifying info (phone number) publicly. There is a private message system here on TCS that is better for exchanging phone numbers or addresses. I'll recommend Nelion Audio like the others. There is another tech people use out west, but a) they don't do the MkII upgrade, if you are interested in that, and b) I've seen a few dozen invoices from that tech, and feel it might be overpriced by a factor of 2x or more. It's well worth the shipping to and from Hersey, MI to get the best outcome, and also the best service at a reasonable cost. Again, glad you found us. Welcome!
  11. Welcome, @alf57 - looking forward to hearing more about your OCCD journey.
  12. Welcome @RONBOORON Glad you found us. This is a great place for information, and a group of guys trying to figure things out. The bad news is that Sunfire never released any service docs into the public domain... The good news is that over the years, as people "stumbled" upon various schematics and such, they have shared them here, and made an incomplete volume of material available on Sunfire - mostly user manuals and some schematics. As @xavionics mentioned, check out the manuals library. Note that some of the experts have noted that some schematics morphed over time in production runs..., so check what's in your own units, as you use the docs we have as a "general" guide. And, why not start a repair thread? There are a couple guys here with pretty good knowledge of the sunfire units, and if they are online, may chime in. Again, so glad you found us!
  13. Welcome to The Carver Site, @Donald Lowe. Glad you found us. Nice Gear list..., I bet it sounds great. When you can, post some pictures of that great set-up!
  14. Saw this over on Facebook... https://www.facebook.com/share/p/15a2dWdYRh/ Some cool pictures of Greg with Bob Carver on a recent visit. Would love a pair of those amps!!
  15. Welcome, @Northerner. Nice avatar! For sure. glad you found us. There is a section/forum on speaker repair..., if you want, start a thread and record your repair..., it might help others in the future, and it might also spark some interest in other experts here, to help you, if you need it. We love pictures..., a few more posts/reactions from members, and you'll be able to post a picture of your gear. We love that! Again, glad you found us and welcome.
  16. Put a lot of effort into using solid (not peanuts) styrofoam packing, a double-wall cardboard carton - and even perhaps two-boxes..., one inside the other. I have used the 24x24x18 FedEx HEAVY DUTY double-wall carton/box you can buy from FedEx location for about $5-$6 and very well worth it. Sheet styrofoam is available from Home Depot or Lowes... a 4x8 foot sheet will fill the gaps top, bottom, and all four sides. Cut out holes in the foam to allow for the binding posts and RCAs to "float"..., and not break off. You might cut the vertical size of the box down to around 12", and that can save shipping cost, and packing. In the end, with that FedEx carton, you should end up with at least 2" of solid foam packing that will protect your unit. It takes time..., yes. But you want your 600x2 to make it there, and back. If you use substandard packing, Greg will replace it with his packing that he has developed, and charge you for it. And, if you call him, he can also send you his packing carton, if you don't wan to build your own. Good luck - and share a picture or tow of your unit. In fact, go in to your tech, and take some pictures with the cover off..., of that part of the board that is burnded or broken "worse than he's seen..." and post it here. There may be someone here that can give you a pointer or two. Glad you found us, and keep us posted! That is a super duper amp, and worthy.
  17. Welcome @alf57, glad you found us. those are highly coveted amps. What speakers and source units are you using? Do you have a preamp too? When you can, please post pictures - brag a bit! We like that here. Again, welcome, and glad you found us!
  18. I have no experience with Mercari. Anyone else? If you are looking at new speakers, one of the best places to audition lots of speakers - new ones - is to go to AXPONA in April, in Schaumburg, and walk the halls. You might pick something up that you know you can flip/resell, until that date.
  19. These are a good choice..., I don't have a pair, and prefer other brands (there are so many good brands)..., However, I would start by looking on FB Marketplace and Offer-Up for local listings, and audition before buying..., negotiate your best face-to-face deal.
  20. ...although, many never learn...
  21. Welcome @AfroSamurai1, glad you found us. We love pictures..., post your rig, when you can...
  22. Welcome to the site, @Grateful Dragon, so glad you found us. What a shitty story about UPS. I had something similar happen with USPS..., our post office has a "drop location" that people (businesses and people in a hurry) can drop off their packages with labels generated online, and once or twice during the day, someone pulls them in, scans them, and puts them in the right bin - HOPEFULLY. One time I did that, and the package disappeared, and was never scanned in the system. I no longer try not to ship on "HOPE"! I've learned that waiting in line, whether at USPS, FedEx, and UPS, it pays. I've stood there, get up to the window, and my friends behind the counter who I know now by name, scan my prepared label and give me a receipt showing that the package is now "in their system." I go out to my car, and track the number, to confirm that all computers synch. Once it is in their system, then Insurance is validated. What's happening in all this? You pegged it, an inside job - or even outside job. FedEx and USPS (at least in my area) all have places to "drop off" a package for people in a hurry - expecting that it is "safely" in the hands of the shipper..., now that I always wait in line, and get the receipt to activate insurance, I've observed people coming in, dropping off "a package", and deftly swiping another package sitting there dropped off by someone before them and walking out with it. I've even called it out - but that doesn't always work out - I've been called a Karen for catching the thief, for slowing the line down even slower..., Slow lines exist everywhere, not just USPS but FedEx and UPS seem to hire ex USPS workers that know that speed is not required..., at the front counter so it's a setup for "karen-ism." Karen experience aside, takeaway lesson is to always get your package "scanned into the system" while you wait, and get a receipt. Insurance isn't activated until you do - as the carrier will just say "you generated a label, but never dropped off the package..." They won't go look at the security footage, why would the be motivated to do so? They are not. I hope it turns up for you. In either case, we are glad you found us, and hope you will post some pictures of your gear. We LOVE pictures. Hang out, and enjoy the site.
  23. @Dallas797, be sure to come back here, and post what you found, and where. There aren't very many threads on the c-500 amp, and your experience may help others. We LOVE pictures, share some of your gear if you can 😉
  24. Welcome, @Dallas797, so glad you found us. At the seminal days of Carver Corp (post Phase Linear), Bob modeled this amp after the PL-400, with additional row of transistors. Like other designs, Bob Carver used existing parts - many of which were for automotive applications. By now, some of these are no longer available, so it becomes a task of finding more recent replacements that fit the purpose. there is a thread on c1000 on DIY Audio..., https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/replacement-transistors-for-long-tailed-pair-please.326664/ A little more googling, might turn up more discussions. Another source would be to go to White Oak Phase Linear, as they provide full upgrade kits to the Phase Linear precursor to this amp..., just google WOPL. I'm short of time at the moment, or I'd look a bit more for you. And, someone here might also have the answer.
  25. Use the SEARCH feature of the site, or browse the forum for speakers (scroll down on home page)..., I'm not sure, but I am guessing someone had a project they documented and shared what glue they used for this purpose. One thing, if you pull the ribbons to get access to the solder connection, good. just don't disassemble the ribbon assembly. that will lead to disaster, as the magnets are under tension, and without the jig that @sea has, you'll never get them back together. good luck, and we LOVE pictures - post picks of your project, when you can, and that solder connection - others may be able to help more with pictures.
