  6. Nice work. Many years ago a coworker had an M&K sub/sat system in his house. We both worked night shift and many times I stopped by his house on the way home for a beer or two.The M&K speakers sounded great and were impressive.Years latter he moved to Tempe,AZ and worked for Rockford(Fosgate).Nice repair and well worth the effort IMHO.
  7. Welcome sKiZo.Thanks for the pics.Your dedication to saving the Sansui is impressive.Nice tube amp work.
  8. I hear that.As you age you gain respect for good surround maintenance. When your a young guy you think they last forever no matter how often they are driven hard.I had good luck with my 2nd used set of surrounds.Guy before me was Asian.Didn't seem to drive them hard and excellent maintenance.Had to be mink oil.
  9. 25 years to late for lube.As best I can remember lube made it even worse Lol.Awe, why did I say that?I don't lie.Oh well she left me.
  10. Good idea UncleMeat. My ex wife's surround got old and dry as well.LOL.
  11. So does the driver that the mink oil was recommended for have a foam surround or butyl rubber?Lots of examples of dry cracked foam surrounds with vintage speakers to be found. The foam must be in a steady state of change with age until it fails after getting dry and brittle. It would make sense that the sound/performance would be slowly degrading over time as the foam becomes brittle as it gets closer to failure. It sounds like this maintenance could extend the original performance as well as the longevity of the surround.
  12. Welcome Ralphies.I hope you enjoy it here. You came to the right place for all things Carver. You mentioned just reading the Carver challenge. He is a very interesting American that has many innovations that all of us enjoy very much. The Sonic Hologram Generator is another Carver innovation that some don't like but many, many people like it and some love it to the point of obsession.Plenty of info about it here and everyone should try it once if you haven't.Is Carver equipment common in your part of the world?

This one has potential to be the next home run.Like Terminator or maybe even greater.
  14. CT-seven makes a great point about letting your wife listen to her music and try to get her to buy in to the SDA SRS IIs.You mentioned buying a new pair of RTI 12s and not being impressed. This goes with my earlier comments about the bar being set high by the SDA SRSIIs.Its difficult to settle for going backward from where you are and you are in a great place.Explain the money you will save at your funeral when she can bury you in a Polk cabinet.I know if I were you I would be "spoiled"by the flagship Polks and would fight hard to keep from going backward. My 2 cents.Easy to go backward from where you are now, but hard to live with.I would keep the big Polks until you find something else that you are happy with to replace them.It may not happen without spending big $.
  15. Billy, Don't get me wrong though, you can get fine performing full range speakers that are smaller and sound great. My reply and comments are considering that the high end Polk speakers that you enjoy have set the bar at a very high level already and once you have enjoyed that level of performance it may be difficult to find a much smaller full range speaker that won't disappoint you.
  16. Billy, Sounds like a sub woofer system may give you the "big rich sound" you describe and keep peace with the wife. The sound that you find impressive with those"huge "Polks have to do with their ability to go down to low around 20 hz with close to flat response.I have had the luxury of hearing only a few full range speakers that have had this ability including the Polks that you own,Infinity Kappa 9 and Acoustic Research AR9.These 3 that I have listened to when they were basically new are all big, heavy, multi-way speakers. It may be possible that the latest tech that I am unaware of has produced bookshelf speakers that can compete with these legendary speakers but I doubt it,and certainly not for $500.A sub/sat system could give you the rich low end response without the huge size that your wife has issue with.If you need to get those Polk's out of your way please let the guys around here know first. It won't take long to find someone with cash to give those speakers a good home. You must have a good wife, many guys would choose the Polks.LOl.
