  1. Welcome Shamrock.. Enjoy.
  2. About age 12 I joined Columbia house.. Boy was my mom surprised when all those records showed up, along with the commitment to buy more. I got the free ones, and mom got the contract! Sorry mom.
  3. Its obvious the people on the Polk site think highly of you Dom, just like the people at CS do..
  4. Agree with all the great comments.. Also the way tech guys step up to help people doing their own work. Some do their own work for fun, and others for economics, but whatever the reason may be, sharing and passing knowledge to others so that they can develop skills of their own, is one of the greatest things human beings can do for each other IMHO.. Passing knowledge is like planting seeds, not all of them sprout, but when they do its a beautiful thing. A lot of good around CS. Reminds me "You can tell the character of a man, by how he treats another man, who can do nothing for him." Good work!
  5. Dom, You must be the tall kid on the left ?
  6. Dom did sound for clubs in the 80s. I bet he has had some killerwatt exposer!
  7. A friend of mine in the late 80s spent $10,000.00 on Rockford Fosgate amps and car gear for a new Pontiac Formula. He won quite a few contest with it. But omg you would think your heart was jumping in your chest, similar to the rush from a top fuel dragster, that earthshaking feeling.. Kind of like Dano's room bridged mono..
  8. I'm sitting in a 14 x 14 x 8 foot extra bedroom using 2-- 60 watt tube mono blocks and they have plenty of power for me.. I must have got old.. I used to crank my M400s in the 1980s til the protection circuits would shut them down, then when they cooled enough to come back on we would do it again, put fans on them and crazy shit running 2 of them mono. Trying to save a little hearing for later. Then there was the car audio thing in the 80s.
  9. In that size room you should be able to create a near death experience !!
  10. Wow. 2 db is a lot of power difference. Sounds like an output increase of 66%. Unless you have an enormous room to fill I'd try it both ways and go for what sounds best to you of course. Should have enough power for hearing loss either way.
  11. Yes, I think that will address Doms concern if you use identical amps.
  12. So you would have an inverting amp full range mono on say left speaker and a non-inverting amp full range mono on the right. I think this is what Dom didn't recommend. Phase issue Dom?
  13. I have to wonder how many they sell with the price tag they have..Probably be amazed.
  14. Eccentric and elegant. I remember seeing B&O in the local HI-FI shop in the 80s. They were always amazing at putting things in small clean packages. Ahead of their time, looking back.
  15. The low level amp rack is awesome for locations between speakers to avoid causing early reflection and to not block absorption panels or diffusers. Great design... Also innovative is the use of the granite surface plate..I have a couple good sized plates at the shop that were not needed so we didn't bother to have them calibrated last time.. Monday they come home..Thanks for sharing Jazzman ! If I only had the tube amps in the pics, I'll have to wipe up the puddle of drool on the floor. The wife will think I was watching porn !!
  16. Welcome back Clyde.
  17. Welcome to CS David.
  18. Good idea about the door to close off the imbalance from the open area at the right. Its the room you have, or the hand your dealt. Can room treatments make big improvement ? Absolutely. Even the basic "live end - dead end" principal would help huge if applied here. May never sound like Carnegie Hall but its your home. Many of us also have uniquely shaped rooms. Very few people are fortunate enough to have rooms designed with any thought given to acoustics. So you live with what you have and improve it. Don't be discouraged. Lots of info. available and its time well spent.
  19. 1 square = 1 foot Damn, Martin! I thought I'd offer a few pointers on how to set up your Amazings by drawing from my own experience with mine, but....... That room shape truly sucks. No surprise you can't get good imaging in there but brother I can assure you the problem is not the Amazings! The room is a challenge for sure, but don't get discouraged. Address early reflections like in the C9 manual and add some good sized bass traps in the box shaped areas, and the room can be made to work well. Add absorption panels in areas of walls that are near the speakers. Basically if you treat the areas of the walls near the speakers (the walls you wish were not there) it can sound as if those walls were removed or moved back several feet because of the absorption. If its glass windows or doors use heavy curtains. Well worth the time and effort IMHO. Can improve your "system", room included, more than any pc of gear ever! You can see the effect the amazing speakers had on the room and they are not even made for that purpose. Fun winter projects. There are few perfect rooms, some just take more effort than others.
  20. Winter in SF bay sounds a bit like spring in Canada doesn't it Rod ? How do they survive it?
  21. Hi Weitrhino. Just curious, factory passive crossovers in place?
  22. Its interesting that Bob made suggestions involving "passive crossover elements". My old AR9s come set up for bi-ampping but the engineer says to never defeat the passive crossover because " its design and function can not be reproduced using an active crossover". It goes on to say you can use an active crossover but the Hi and low pass need to overlap at least an octave on both sides of the crossover point to allow the passive to function and not degrade the performance. The AR9s are 4 way but maybe the crossover situation is similar? I think its a similar situation with Infinity Kappa 9s. Some of the passive cap and coil crossover designs have some "magic" in them designed by masters. It might be impossible to duplicate those with an active crossover.
  23. Maybe the inactive drivers in the amazings are acting as bass traps and or absorption panels ? Put a variable resistor across the binding post and maybe you can tune the frequency they dampen. Lol. You discovered a new product. 'Tunable traps' or "passive damping". You know, what you have is a passive radiator principal in reverse .
  24. Other than heat, it is possible to induce noise from stacking in some cases. One time I had a dead quite BillD C1 on top of a pair of M1.0Ts and picked up a hissing sound in the otherwise quiet background. After spacing further apart the noise went away. The receiver may be different since it was designed with an amp inside to begin with, but if you hear a hiss with no music playing, try adding space between them.
  25. 1977. I didn't smoke until 79 or was it 78? Hmm can't remember.
