  4. I should have asked are we talking low mass med. mass or high tonearms for the carts?
  5. My favorite is a Shure V-15-II I have a few of the Shure V-15-III with jaco sis and a few others and I should be picking one of them but I like and prefer the v-15-II sound. I think it is because that is what I had in the old days (could not afford the top dog III) and am just used to it?
  6. Sony HAP Z1ES Player is $1700 and has no Hi Res or Tidal streaming wow!

  8. When you set them up if there is anyway you can give them at least 3 feet from the back wall you will love them Turns that back area into a nice bass bin. Even a foot on the sides is fine because the sound pattern is like a figure 8 so there is not much on the sides at first.
  9. I just drag or copy paste over the .Flac files to a usb stick and push it in the players usb port it then plays it with its software player. In windows I use dbpoweramp cd ripper (has a small fee) in linux I use abcde but dbpoweramp cd ripper is a good product. And then you can choose the level of flac to use default is level 5 I use 8 or 10
  10. One of the worst things that can happen to you is getting the super sweet spot and then for no other reason other than thinking there might even be a sweeter spot that is being missed out on you move things just a little bit and then can never get the super sweet spot back. Even the tape on the floor doesn't do it, it is gone and you have to start all over lol
  11. I don't even turn on my trucks radio anymore because it has no comparison to the 2 channel rig at home.
  12. The closest song that comes to mind is "Ride On" with Bon Scott
  13. The room shape matters a lot but a good rule of thumb is to point the ribbons at your ears at the seated position. Then back it off a little at a time until you have good sound stage.
  14. That's what I thought, I have a couple Yamaha electric x-overs I bought off ebay because dr markie recommended them for apogee and carver and infinity hybrids. But they seemed overly complicated and I never really used them, anyway you can have them for free if you want I am near I-5 by the UW in wallingford.
  15. I love active systems really brings out the music, where are you located Will? Usually you get what you pay for on dsp's Really cheap ones are bad PA units, expensive ones are musical and medium priced fall right in the middle and can go either way.
  16. Welcome what is it you are looking for information wise?
  17. Pretty much the same biggest difference is they are heard best when standing up as opposed to seated, when trying for loud the 2 speakers work like they are one (almost). But if I just want quality I always pick the Plats to go by themselves. Albikes did the previous owner mention if he had come on this forum in the past? Just curious because the xover layout looks like the set up a person did on here before.
  18. I wish I had the room to have no amps in the middle I know I would like the sound better.
  19. OK quick identification update on ALS and Plats Originals ALS flat woofers with two 30" ribbons, single speaker wire connection. Originals ALS Hybrids same as above but 30" ribbons replaced with 60" models and the X-over is changed still has the flat woofers. Platinum one 60" single ribbon with new paper woofers have 2 rectangle pieces of foam one top one near bottom on the back of the ribbons, dual speaker outputs Platinum two same as one's but on the back of the ribbon it has a full length black materiel (like velcro) that dampens the rear reflections, very late 2 may have a single pot adjustment added to the rear panel. (very rare) Platinum 3 early 3's have dual binding posts may have single tone adjustment, late 3's have 3 tone controls but only single binding posts for speakers. The only differences between the late 3's and the IV's is the x-over on the 3's have a single coil and the woofers are wired out of phase. Platinum IV 60" ribbons,3 tone control pots, single speaker binding posts, x-over has 2 coils and the woofers are wired in phase with the ribbon.
  20. On some like the pictures I posted they are nice on others the plastic cracks and people make their own like on the ebay units.
  21. These are nice ones looks like the original owner had the ribbon out on one of them (see the blue splices) I just save the ribbons I will admit I am a ribbon horder big time lol
  22. Funny that this thread would start here is me today just picking up a pair of Plats (ones)
