Wow! I can hardly believe they would leave the place in such a sad state. One can only hope it was mostly disco.
-
Great buys! From the looks of those components you appear to have received the deal of the century on the set. I'm guessing you will need to sink much more into bringing them up to date with new caps etc. Just know the results will be well worth it.

Thanks! What great info and shopping tips. Let put it on the site player (even though I enjoyed the Peter Gabriel).

SA-WEET!!! I love these older Infinity boxes. I have a pair of RS-5 with the same great looking oak finish and the cool veneer wrap on the corners as yours. I also have several pairs from the Quantum line that got me started on Infinity speakers. Congrats on the new speakers.

GULP! Sticker shock alert! BTW Kevin, that really is thinking outside the box.

Welcome and congrats on taking the plunge into the shallow gene pool that is O.C.C.D. infested with some of the greatest guys you will find on this planet (myself excluded)! I got hooked on Carver stuff while stationed in Germany in the late 70's (when it was still Phase Linear). My first amp was a Model 200 Series II and it rocked my Infinity Q Jr's! -
Welcome! Great amp to start a Carver obsession with. Nice system and I love those big Maggies!
-
Welcome! I also have an affinity for a few pieces of tube gear as well as the vintage I.C. analog stuff. I hope you enjoy it here.
-
Do I recall correctly that you have a special made rack for your headphone collection? What's the count up to? I hope you find these are keepers and enjoy them.

Welcome back! Good luck with your equipment search and Sub build.
-
They often come up on ebay and CL and a good deal can be found occasionally. Very solid and built like a BSH. Snag a pair, upgrade the crossovers and add tight little sub and you will be a very happy camper!

Good score Snow! I have been interested in those speakers and IMHO they are the only decent sounding Japanese speakers I have ever heard. Here are few links I found for refurb, mod or upgrade.: http://www.audioflat.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=159 http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/Yamaha-NS1000.htm http://www.audiosmile.com/forum/showthread.php?p=274028 http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/126270-yamaha-ns1000-crossover-tweaks-20.html

I hear you Snow! By the time I got to the thread I forgot why I clicked it. -
Back after audio hiatus with some Infinity Quantum line source
galaxyoilcan replied to Ratamahatta's topic in Loudspeakers
These QLS-1 look fantastic! I share your enthusiasm for them and have a wall of vintage speakers with a collection of Infinity Quantum speakers that range from an unfinished rebuild of a pair of QLS-1, to working pairs of Quantum 2, 3 and 5 models. I also have a working pair of Qb's with the same cool metal stands as I have for the Quantum 5's. I either need to complete the collection or start selling it off. You are absolutely correct about the Watkins dual voice coil woofers being the power hogs. They are designed to trade adequate power for accurate bass response as low as you care to go. Line array rules! I can't wait to see more on your QLS-1 rebuild project. Maybe it will help me figure out how to finish mine. I wonder if there are any crossover mods or upgrades that Infinity fans have come up with over the years? -

IN-deed! Thanks for the great karma offering.

I could probably quit anytime I want. However, I have an affinity for Infinity and other great old vintage speakers and the beautiful real wood veneers on them. most of the old speakers on my "wall of shame" still sound great and get a chance to prove it on a rotating basis. A few are due for new surrounds and some are projects that need attention (Maggies, Boston Acoustics). Most of the components in the boxes are demo video decks and other home theater stuff from my years with JVC military sales. Nearly all the good ol' analog electronics are inside with me.

New Carver owner here!

WELCOME! It sounds like you have a really great start on a bad case of O.C.C.D. that I'm sure will be all consuming once you have heard the difference between the unmodified C-4000 you enjoyed and the BillD modified C-1. I believe the C-1 to be a cleaner more musical sounding preamp to start with, but the BillD treatment lowers the noise floor to such a degree you will be astounded. I have also become extremely enamoured with the modified C-1 sound and the significant work of it's engineer (BilldD) as well as the many fine techs here on this site who have learned to duplicate and build upon that genius. I also have a C-4000 in the process of being modified and look forward to hearing the transformation it will surely undergo. I look forward to hearing your review and opinion of the BillD modified C-1. I have said before that adding one to your system is like getting an all new and better sounding set of gear. As our good friend Zumbini would say.: "Enjoy the music!" -

This is what it's really all about! The music! What a bunch of fantastic music collections and great stories about how this music came into your lives all together or one piece at a time. Thanks guys! -
I never did all that well on the spatial orientation tests, so the visuals blew my mind! I agree the plot did get a little thin there. Awesome roof shaking home theater surround film though!
-
I'm of the same mind when it comes to speakers. I like several different brands and models in my vintage stable. I have Infinity Quantum models, a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10 that I listen to often and my latest flavor treat is a pair of Carver AL-III that I'm still getting used to. They are all so different but I like them all. I'm putting together a tube system for the even more vintage boxes I 'm holding onto with the paper cones which are mostly very efficient and a few have the old alnico drivers. (ancient history alert).

The edges on one looks pretty gnawed up so the cosmetics on them kinda suck. As long as they still sound good I won't be able to hear how they look. Besides, I can dress up a pig (I do it every time I go out). The price I agreed to was $599 + California has their hand in my pocket for another $52.50 in state sales tax and a $10 pick up fee (WTF?). They should give me a discount for saving them the trouble of having to pack & ship. The standard shipping was going to be $220 so I suspect they supplement their profits there.
