  1. 1. Fleetwood Mac Rumors on DVD Audio, The Chain. I have never heard a recording that better puts you right in the studio with the band. The clarity, separation and soundstage are superb. 2. Telarc’s Time Warp, Battlestar Galactica Main Theme. The bass on this track is so deep, and hits so hard - the disc actually has a warning on it for this very reason - it’s been known to damage speakers. 3. The Eagles Hell Freezes Over DTS, Seven Bridges Road. Probably the best live recording I’ve heard. The harmonization of the voices is pure magic. 4. Skryllix Recess, Fu*k That. For flat-out pound you in the chest bass, this track just plain scares people, especially with the DD18. 5. Alison Krauss A Hundred Miles Or More, Whisky Lullaby. Spectacular recording, tear-jerking lyrics, and intoxicating presence and clarity.
  2. I’m 3 episodes into this, and I’m beyond hooked. Based on a true story, the acting is top notch. I relish movies/series that can make me physically uncomfortable (think the dinner scene in American History X), and this one delivers. I can’t wait to see how it ends.... a showtime series, but it’s available on Prime.

  4. From a fellow Carver/Polk fan - WELCOME!
  5. After hearing it last night at Dick’s house, I can definitely second the recommendation. Outstanding detail and clarity!
  6. Most every album Chip Davis put together was “concept” by virtue of being strongly themed, but here are a couple of my favorites:
  7. If you want to save some coin Brian, I’ll buy the US version and ship it to you... (if that would save you $, based on the exchange rate?)
  8. I count myself as one of the few (perhaps sacrilegiously so) people that far prefer the post-Waters PF material to the “original” material. This set is long overdue - I just wish it were a bit cheaper, lol....
  9. I received this as a gift from Tim ( @PhilDent ), and it has quickly made its way to the top of my play rotation. The sound quality is not only superb, but it is lively, active, visceral! The range of tracks keeps you guessing - there’s something different around every corner. One of, if not the best DTS mix I’ve experienced. highly recommended, and THANK YOU TIM!
  10. Most people only know “Baker Street”, but this entire album is one of my favorites, and I can honestly say there’s not a song on it that I don’t enjoy.

    Jack Ryan

I’ve been watching this series on Amazon Prime while (anxiously) awaiting the next season of Man In the High Castle to arrive. It it took me a couple of episodes to “let go” of my visions of Harrison Ford and Alec Baldwin as Dr Ryan, and embrace John Krasinski in the role. I’ve just started season 2, and as someone who’s read more than a few of Clancy’s books, I can say that THIS is how the stories of Jack Ryan’s adventures should be told on the screen. I’ve always thought that Clancy’s books were just too detailed and in-depth to translate effectively into a 2 hour film. The 8-10 hours afforded by a season format on one of the streaming services (Prime in this case) is the ideal format. The production is well done, with a very good mix of action, drama and character development. It’s gritty when it needs to be, violent when it needs to be, and presents a few ethical dilemmas that are salient and thought provoking. It also steers clear of taking a political stand, which is challenging given the content. The real gem, in my opinion, is the chemistry between Ryan and Grier. Acting is solid throughout, and it’s leaving me wanting more. 2 seasons so far, with more planned. This could be a real “brand builder” for Prime. Highly recommended!
  12. While the intention of this thread is to highlight great, but somewhat unknown movies, I feel compelled to issue a warning about a recent “off the beaten path” film that I saw yesterday. The film is called The Lighthouse, and It is billed as a terrifying psychological thriller starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, and is receiving rave reviews from critics and viewers alike (92% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, 70% from audiences). The film is shot in a narrow 4:3 ratio, and is in black and white. These two factors made me feel cramped and unsettled from the get go - a great way to start a horror/thriller. Unfortunately, that’s about as close as it came. I will say that the film is masterfully shot - the textures and contrast in the black and white presentation are rich and well controlled, and the cinematography is outstanding. Shot selection and framing are superb, and perspective is used fluently to communicate with the viewer. The big miss, and the reason I encourage you to avoid this film, is the story (or lack thereof). This is one of those films that I really think people don’t understand, yet are reluctant to admit they don’t understand, so they go the other way, and rave about it. They extol it’s virtues of “mysticism” and “deeper meaning”, all the while hoping no one calls their bluff. This in turn causes more people to jump on the bandwagon, for fear of being left on the outside, and not “getting it”. Well I most certainly did NOT get it, and I’ll freely admit it. I was so confused, I went on line after, thinking I must have missed something big in the film. Nope. If you read the reviews and comments, it’s clear that no one really “gets it”. I did find a description that sums my own feelings up pretty well:
  13. Welcome to the forum, Chris. We have quite a Canadian continent - @Brian_at_HHH , @4RUNNER , @DrummerJuice Just to name a few. For the first time in my life, I too now have two dedicated spaces for gear, one being a HT. I'm pretty sure the laser can be replaced in your DTL - I think Kevin ( @kve777 ) May know the scoop, if I recall correctly. Anyway, kick back and enjoy!
  14. Technically yes, it is “cheating”, LOL! By their very nature, Greatest Hits albums are supposed to have nothing but great songs on them. That said, I’ve heard many a “Greatest Hits” album that was anything but... Oh, and that IS a great album, BTW👍
  15. I was literally just listening to this today, thinking the exact same thing.
  16. This was posted on another forum, and it’s one of the coolest graphics I’ve seen in a long time. Very eye-opening!
  17. That is pretty damn cool...!
  18. I doubt that could happen in today’s climate.... if they did, it would be MUCH shorter, lol.
  19. It’s 11:30 at night, and the rest of the family have gone to bed. This is arguably one of the best times of the day - not that I don’t love the family, but it is nice to have that peace and quiet that only comes from solitude. As I surf channels looking for some light viewing, I see Point Break. Great - this is one of may favorite “do it to me” movies. From Keanu’s awkward acting, to Swazye’s surfer dude persona, and a pretty entertaining premise - yea, I’m there! But then.... You guessed it - it’s the 2015 remake... Ugh... back to the surfing(pun) for something else. what are your LEAST favorite remakes? You know, the ones thatNEVER should have been made?
  20. Seriously.... WTF...? https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/29/arts/music/john-legend-baby-its-cold-outside.html
  21. Thats some good stuff - kinda felt like ZZ Top for a second, but then got a lot more complex and interesting. Thanks for a gem I’d never heard of!
  22. I REALLY like almost all of this album, but “Smokin’” just doesn’t pull the same weight as the rest of the album, IMHO... HOWEVER, the rest is SO good that I’ll still play it start to finish on occasion:-)
  23. While I don’t subscribe to the school of thought that says you should listen to an album start to finish (I’m a total browser when I listen), I do acknowledge that a select few albums stand alone, with every track being great. What albums do you enjoy every song on, hence the title - All killer, no filler! One of my favorites for this category is Fleetwood Mac - Rumors. I enjoy EVERY song on this album. When I was younger, I could not stand “Never Goin’ Back Again”, but now, with a greater appreciation of Lindsay’s guitar work, and much higher quality audio gear, it’s become one of my favorites. Also, the DVD Audio version has an extra track, “Silver Springs” that’s a true gem.
