  1. If someone whips out a jar of Vaseline, I’m outta here....
  2. I think I might physically hurt myself with four of them?
  3. I’ve been living with this sub for a couple of months now, and figured I would share my impressions thus far. Full disclosure, my listening “room”(area?) is FAR from ideal, and as it happens, temporary. Thus, I have not used the mic or any of the setup tools/software to dial in the sub. I did set the servo circuit to maximum gain (the “music” setting, vs “movie”) - FWIW, the servo will always be on maximum, even when the sub is pressed into theater duty - accuracy above all else, and honestly, this beast has output (volume) for days - no need to sacrifice any accuracy for more output. I realize that that the first words that come to mind as I try to describe this thing are painfully cliché (effortless, visceral, tight, etc). They are made all the more cliché because I used them to describe my DD12. This thing really is in a whole different league. I hear bass in almost every recording that I never knew existed - I know, more cliché. Victor Wooten’s “Show of Hands” is one of the best bass demo recordings you can own. Victor is the bassist for Belá Fleck, and a true master. Two tracks in particular - The Vision and A Show of Hands - are absolutely amazing. You can hear(feel) not only the string interacting with the pick-up, neck and frets, you can feel the impact of his thumb on the string. The Battlestar Galactica them off the reference disc is downright scary. Cone excursion on the DD18 is said to be 1.8” peak to peak. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but I assure you, standing over the sub and looking down at that excursion is spooky. And load. And present. One of the more common things I now hear are random thumpings and bumpings in the studio right before the music starts on more than a few recordings. I initially set the low pass at 40hz and the volume at 50 (out of 100). Ouch. Volume now floats between 30-35. I’ve actually upped the crossover to around 60hz. This is the first sub I’ve ever had where I’ve found a crossover point that high pleasing. Other than the size committment, I can’t think of a negative thing to say about this sub. I’m in love. Now if I could find another to run in stereo...??
  4. Happy birthday Dick!
  5. Welcome to the forum! there are many here that share your fondness for vinyl, and the 500t is a crowd favorite (my personal favorite of all Carver amps as well). The C1 is an outstanding preamp, and many upgrades are available for it. Hang out, look around, and make yourself at home!

Here are a few that will pin your ears back, from a DR standpoint. BE CAREFUL with Time Warp - I’ve heard many a “woofer slap” with this disc...
  8. Great advice - I never knew such services existed. Thanks!
  9. In thinking about some more entries for the “Stellar recordings” threaded, i was taken back to the late ‘80s, and my car audio heydays. I had acquired this test disc from a friend of a friend of an installer, and I swear, I must have played that thing 1,000 times in my car systems, and even in a few of my home systems. So I went down to my menagerie of a basement to see if I could find it. Sure enough, I located the wayward disc. I pulled it out of the case and saw on the laser side the evidence of years of abuse at my ignorant adolescent hands: Here’s where it gets interesting. I figured what the hell, I’ll just buy a new copy. Amazon - not available. Ok, eBay, where find two listings: Well shit - as the title says, if only I’d known.... so I come before the greatest collection of audio minds and experiences that I know of, asking how is the best way to go about restoring this gem? The disc plays fine, so should I just leave it alone? Obviously, experimentation is not an option - if I restore it, it must be a proven method... Thanks guys - if only I’d known??
  10. Glad to have another Infinity fan in the house! welcome!
  11. Great points Andrew, and share the ones where you think only you can hear the difference - those are the ones we want to hear about.!
  12. We all know what constitutes a poor recording - instruments not at equal volume relative to one another, no soundstage, no dynamic range, unacceptable noise levels, etc. with that in mind, for me at least, a stellar recording is one with as little noise as possible (given the era of the original), w i d e dynamic range, excellent soundstage (both depth and width), detail and of course accurate mixing. Not to wax the transcendental, but when I hear it, I just know?
  13. That was one of the funniest parts of Anchorman.
  14. This has been hinted at and requested in other threads, so here we go. Please post your experiences with outstanding recordings - the actual music is not the focus of this thread, we are looking for well produced, mastered and recorded media, period. I’ll start with a disc that is as close to perfectly recorded as I’ve found. The actual content is not necessarily my favorite, but it is impeccably recorded:
  15. I’ve really been enjoying Sean Rowe for a while now. He has a very unique sound, and I especially like the stories he tells in his songs. One in particular that I find powerful is The Very First Snow. The world rolls and it changes gears But today I'll stay in bed I'm gonna soak these sheets in tears I'm gonna think of you instead They say that you're in a better place now Oh but they don't believe what they know You left with all of the Christmas lights on As light as the very first snow I see red and I hear the noise I'm gonna go there when I can Oh whiskey rye is my drug of choice I think the night will understand And though you won't get that cold anymore You will freeze in the back of my brain And in my dreams I will open the door If you will lean into the frame I'm gonna miss your indoor voice And the way you washed your hands And all these diamonds you left for me That I just thought were sand They say that you're in a better place now Oh but they don't believe what they know You left with all of the Christmas lights on As light as the very first snow
  16. New additions to the list: “Take Your Best Shot” by Dope “Babylon” by David Grey “The Beautiful People” by Marilyn Manson “Fu*k Your God” by Deicide ”Zikrayati (My Memories)” by Mohamed El-Qasabgi http://activismcode.com/2018/02/11/revealed-the-list-of-songs-the-cia-used-to-torture-muslim-prisoners/
  17. I went and saw this yesterday, and it was fabulous. It was courageously honest in its portrayal of the life of Freddy and his struggles, but it was done in a very considerate and respectful manner. It had some incredibly humorous moments, and some very touching moments. The portrayal of the Live-Aide concert was pure goose-bump material. Great cast too. I cannot recommend this film highly enough. If you are even a passing Queen fan, go see it.
  18. Welcome aboard - I still have my first carver piece - bought it new in ‘93(ish). The trusty A-400x?
  19. This will probably be worth picking up if you are into SACD at all. Due for re-release this December. (This might be the one to break me out of my PF malaise ?) https://store.acousticsounds.com/d/133316/Pink_Floyd-Wish_You_Were_Here-Hybrid_Multichannel_SACD
  20. My last job for about a year and a half gave me a lot of drive time. I found myself abandoning music in the truck for audiobooks first, then I “discovered” podcasts. What a new an interesting world! In fact, I find myself ALMOST missing the drive time now, because I’m behind on my favorites: The Joe Rogen Experience - I can’t stand Rogen as the UFC commentator, but I thoughly enjoy his podcast. He has a WIDE array of guests, from Neil Degrass Tyson, Jordan Peterson, Bret Weinstein, Rosanne, Ron White, and on and on. Definately my favorite pod cast. Ben Shapiro - excellent analysis and delivery of what you need to know daily. what are your favorites?
  21. So first, it poured rain here Tuesday and today (Thursday), but yesterday (Wednesday) was PERFECT - blue skies and clear. It was a beautiful drive. And I called the seller (Karen) when I got into town. She gave me directions to her house, which happened to be on the market for 1.7mil. I’d say about 8,000 sq/ft on 3 acres that backs up to wetlands. Incredible. In the course of our conversation, I found out her husband left her, and she has to sell the house and most everything in it:-( after I got the sub loaded up, I spent a little over an hour helping her take photos and giving her descriptions and prices to list everything from speakers (Theil), amps (Adcom), Preamp (Lexicon), DVD player and wires. She was greatful for the help, and I felt better about giving so little for the sub. Driving home, I realized that much of my gear has a “ story”, and now this sub does too. It made it home in perfect shape - thank you all for the suggestions! I hooked it up tonight, and all I can say is HOLY SHIT. Seriously. I played some Deadmou5 (what else?) and I had it set at “35” out of “100”. It was violently glorious. This is going to be a good relationship...?? Its sitting next to the 12” DD12 in the photos...?
  22. Hey Nick, sorry you are having a problem with Morjet - unfortunately he’s far from a regular contributor here, and hasn’t been on the forum for almost 3 months. As a community, we are lucky to have very few of these incidents, but I know that doesn’t help you. I would continue with your PayPal dispute, and be persistent with your calls. The value of the ribbons may make a small-claims suit worth your time... best of luck, Mark
  23. Just got it home - here are a couple pics at the gas station earlier this evening. I’ll unwrap, shoot more pics, and tell the rest of the story tomorrow... i ended up going with the “flat panel tv foam sheets” suggested by AJ, then shrink wrap, then 2 moving blankets with 36” rubber band straps.
  24. I think it is too big to fit in the back seat of my crew cab truck:-( the plan is to wrap it up and strap it Against the back of the cab (less bounce there from bumps and such, vs against the tailgate). I plan to place the side agains the bed wall, avoiding any pressure on the driver or amp panel. I was going to remove the grill cover and keep in in the cab. The car polish is genius - I never would have thought of that.
  25. I thought the same - B&W and Klipsch go together like salsa and ice cream. I was wondering that - I think the shrink wrap would cling to the smooth surface and prevent anything (even a moving blanket) from rubbing on the drive home. Great advice, thanks! Yes, heavy - 125 lbs...??
