  1. Mike + The Mechanics - Par Avon Haunting lyrics and a thoughtful composition that was heard by very few, in the shadow of “Silent Running” and “All I Need Is A Miracle”.... https://youtu.be/4-u03QnXGdE
  2. Here’s another one that hit me pretty hard when I figured out what was really being said in the lyrics - "Carolina In My Mind" James Taylor In my mind I'm going to Carolina. Can't you see the sunshine, can't you just feel the moonshine? Ain't it just like a friend of mine to hit me from behind? Yes, I'm going to Carolina in my mind. Karen she's the silver sun, you best walk her way and watch it shine, watch her watch the morning come. A silver tear appearing now I'm crying, ain't I? I'm going to Carolina in my mind. There ain't no doubt in no ones mind that loves the finest thing around, whisper something soft and kind. And hey, babe, the sky's on fire, I'm dying, ain't I? I'm going to Carolina in my mind. In my mind I'm going to Carolina. Can't you see the sunshine, can't you just feel the moonshine? Ain't it just like a friend of mine to hit me from behind? Yes, I'm going to Carolina in my mind. Dark and silent late last night, I think I might have heard the highway calling. Geese in flight and dogs that bite. And signs that might be omens say I'm going, going I'm gone to Carolina in my mind. Now with a holy host of others standing round me, still I'm on the dark side of the moon. And it seems like it goes on like this forever, you must forgive me if I'm up and gone to Carolina in my mind. In my mind I'm going to Carolina. Can't you see the sunshine, can't you just feel the moonshine? Ain't it just like a friend of mine to hit me from behind? Yes, I'm gone to Carolina in my mind. Gotta make it back home again soon, gotta make it back on home again soon, gotta make it back to Carolina soon, can't hang around, no babe, gotta make it back home again, gotta make it back to Carolina soon...
  3. Maybe I’m the only one, but have any of you had a song that you’d heard hundreds of times, and then one day, you actually listened to the lyrics, and found the song to take on an entirely different meaning? I recently experienced this with “Escape”, by Rupert Holmes. You all know it, it’s the catchy Piña Colada song. Well, if you did not know it, the lyrics are a bit dark! (See below). Has anyone else experienced this - shock (or at least surprised) when you learn the actual lyrics of a familiar song? Escape (The Pina Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes You know I love my lady, we'd been together so long We're like a worn-out recording of my favorite song So while she lay there sleeping, I read the paper in bed And in the personal columns, there was this letter that read If you like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain If you're not into yoga, if you have half a brain If you like making love at midnight in the dunes of the cape Then I'm the love that you've looked for, write to me and escape I didn't think about my lady, I know that sounds kind of mean But me and my old lady had fallen into the same old dull routine So I wrote to the paper, took out a personal ad And though I'm nobody's poet, I thought it wasn't half-bad Yes, I like piña coladas, and getting caught in the rain I'm not much into health food, but I am into champagne I've got to meet you by tomorrow, cut through all this red tape At a bar called Scrappy Malloy's, we'll plan our escape So I waited with high hopes, then she walked in the place I knew her smile in an instant, I knew the curve of her face It was my own lovely lady, and she said, "Oh, it's you" Then we laughed for a moment, and I said, "I never knew" I never knew you liked piña coladas, or getting caught in the rain And the feel of the ocean, and the taste of champagne If you like making love at midnight in the dunes of the cape Then you're the lady that I've looked for, come with me and escape
  4. First, a huge shout-out to @Sk1Bum for pointing me towards this outstanding series on Prime. A brief warning - it does start slow. However, after the first 3-4 episodes (consider that time character building), things start to really take off. I find the premise intriguing, to say the least: in the series (set in the early ‘60s) the US lost WWII, and Germany controls everything east of the Rockies, and Japan everything West. The Rockies are the “neutral zone”, and more or less free. The acting and character development are superb, and there are some flat-out flooring reveals. The fourth (and final) season releases on Nov 15th. I can’t wait.
  5. Winston - “Jonathon, just walk away.” Santino - “Yea Jonathan, just walk aw....” ~John Wick 2
  6. Well.... This has been a fun (and expensive) thread to catch up on! 4 Cds coming from Amazon... Here’s one I picked up during my hiatus:
  7. I’m at the point in my audio journey (and I’m sure a few of you are too) where I really don’t need more gear, are at least gear that is significantly better than what I already have is beyond my means. Therefore, what really drives me now, is new music to enjoy. It’s become a bit of an obsession, driven in part by my discovery of the Shazam app. I know we already have the “what are you listening to now” thread, and the “song of the day” thread, and while those are great in their own right, knowing that someone is listening to DSOTM, Aja, Rumors, etc isn’t really what I’m looking for. The purpose of this thread is to share music that you have discovered, that you have a reasonable belief the many here may not have heard of. Any genre, any medium - quality recordings a definite plus. A couple of my recent “finds”:
  8. Awesome Bryan! I wouldn’t fret the exchange - top of the line isn’t always best of the line. Back in the early 90’s I listened extensively to the Polk “LS” line, and I settled on the LS70 over the top of the line LS90. I still have those LS70s to this day...?
  9. BB King "I'm Moving On" Just this morning I took a big long look around I've lived it up and loved it up And done it in this town Life goes on Look like it's time For moving on Good-bye, baby I wanna thank you for the ride We did a dance and took a chance Nothing we ain't tried C'est la vie Time, you and me Moving on I'm moving on I'll see you somewhere down the line I'm moving on We're looking good and feeling fine I'm moving on And you are yours and I'm mine I'll see you somewhere in my dreams I'm moving on So thanks for all the memories I'm moving on And you can call me Mr. Breeze I'm moving on Life is full of mysteries Nothing is ever what it seems Might try Vegas And keep on playing till I win Or take it out to Hollywood And fall in love again Come what may Night and day I'm moving on I'm moving on I'm moving on I'll see you somewhere down the line I'm moving on We're looking good and feeling fine I'm moving on And you are yours and I'm mine I'll see you somewhere in my dreams I'm moving on So thanks for all the memories I'm moving on And you can call me Mr. Breeze I'm moving on Life is full of mysteries Nothing is ever what it seems
  10. Hey Brian, glad you finally made it here! I remember my trip(s) out to your place well. How are the Polks holding up? Did you ever look into the RDO 194 tweeter upgrades I told you about? as for a C1, I’ve got you covered. In fact, I’ve got a backup one with the BillD mods we can slip into your system, and you can audition it for as long as you like (it’s just collecting dust at my place!). PM me your number (I can’t find it in my phone any more, from last year), and we can chat. welcome again! PS - that Klipsch sub is still in the box, lol??
  11. For this weekend’s selection, I offer a clever and intriguing “heist” film, appropriately titled Heist (not The Heist, or American Heist - Just Heist). This is a heist film that does not rely on shootouts, pulse-pounding building climes, or helicopter stunts to move the story along. It relies on clever planning, slight of hand twists and superb acting to deliver the goods (pun). This film is stacked with memorable performances - Delroy Lindo, Danny Devito, Rebecca Pidgeon, Sam Rockwell, Ricky Jay, and of course Gene Hackman. I can’t discuss too much without giving anything away, but if you like a good Heist movie, this one is well worth your time:-)
  12. For this weekend’s offering, I’m going to share one of my top 5 all-time favorite films (and that’s a very exclusive list!) - Cameron Crow’s 2000 film, Almost Famous. First and foremost, if you are in any way a fan of ‘70s rock, this film is a MUST SEE. It is the story of the real-life events of Cameron Crow as a young teen writing for Rolling Stone magazine while touring with The Alman Brothers (Though in the film, he tours with the fictitious band Stillwater). Crow knew early in his film career he wanted to make this film. He and his wife (Nancy Wilson of Heart) wrote the Stillwater songs on their honeymoon. The film is a wonderful coming of age story, set against the backdrop of the ‘70s rock scene. There are incredibly touching moments, great humor, and unequivocally the best soundtrack of any movie I’ve seen. All of the acting performances are top notch, but the performances of both Francis McDormand and Philip Seymour Hoffman are truly fantastic. if you have the option, the “Bootleg” version is highly preferable, as the extended scenes really add to the overall film.
  13. That’s a nice rack, and a very nice room as well. Fellow Klipsch fan here - My HT runs the Klipsch “7” line (RF7 towers, RC7 center, and RS7 surrounds x4). I find the combination of Carver and Klipsch to be unforgivingly accurate, and pure magic with impeccable source material. welcome to the forum!
  14. @Nahash5150 - found this at the record store this past weekend, and thought about buying it for you - but then I remembered you aren’t into vinyl?
  15. A little background - I listen almost exclusively to FLAC files from a 2tb portable HDD, using the Oppo 105 as server/DAC (currently about 1.6tb of files). My son also has a copy of the files on a 2tb drive that he uses on a modest system in his room, and I have two backups that I keep in the gun safe, for a total of four (4) drives. When I buy a new CD, I rip in to FLAC on the PC, creating an album file, and store that album file in a file I labeled “Temp FLAC”. Now comes the “there’s got to be an easier way” part. I have to plug each of the four drives in (one at a time), and depending on how much new music I have, go to each “artist file” on that drive, open it, then add the new “album file” to that artist file. If it’s a new artist to me, then I create a new “artist file” for that artist, but you get the idea. All this on four separate drives.... i suppose i could just update one drive with the new music, then over write the other 3, but that seems like a lot of unnecessary writing. Any of you computer experts point me in the write (pun) direction?
  16. Woody set himself apart (for me at least) in the first season of True Detective. He and Mcconaughey were incredible in that show. Speaking of Woody, anyone else excited for this one? ?
  17. My son and I went to see Once Upon A Time in Hollywood last night. I won’t force you to skim to the bottom of my drivel for my recommendation, if that is all you are seeking - it’s an extremely well done film, and I recommend you see it - if you like Tarantino’s work. It’s fair to say that I enjoy his work (except Dusk Til Dawn - I never could figure that one out, lol). To me, his films are FULL of texture. On the one hand, watching his work is like sitting at a table and having him throw you pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, one at a time. The farther in you get, you start putting the pieces together, and forming the story - but you don’t see the whole thing until the very end. But more than that, each piece is fascinating in its own right, worthy of study and admiration. In fact, Tarantino’s best films (Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction) almost play like a dozen or so short stories, woven together into a compelling tapestry. Once Upon A Time in Hollywood is no exception. The story unfolds in 1969 LA, against the backdrop of the Sharon Tate murder. Just the scenery is a joyous trip down memory lane - the cars, tv programs, clothing, etc... then there’s the cast - Pitt and DiCaprio obviously (and their first work together), but intriguing supporting performances from Olyphant, Russell, Pacino and Luke Perry (his last film role, R.I.P.). Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It keeps you wanting to “peek around the corner”, and see what happens next. It’s not as “R” rated as most of Tarantino’s work, and there is an Easter egg in the credits, so sit tight for a few minutes at the end.
  18. Very nice indeed. What is the model of pistol on the wall?
  19. Agreed - outstanding performance by Russo. The chemistry between her and Brosnan was excellent, with a solid supporting performance from Dennis Leary. One of the few remakes that bested the original, IMHO.
  20. This is by far my favorite Kevin Costner film -
  21. This weekend’s selection is my all-time favorite “dark comedy”, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. The film could be loosely described as a buddy-cop movie, but there’s much more going on than that. The chemistry between Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr is pure magic. The story is compelling with a good mystery (and a twist). Perhaps my favorite aspect of the film however, is the razor-sharp dialogue - it’s supremely witty, darkly humorous, and laugh out loud funny (albeit not for the kids).
  22. I really enjoy the Tom Clancy based films (except Patriot Games - I don’t know why, but that one never did it for me). This clip from Clear and Present Danger was one of my go-to demos during my Laser Disc heydays... I loved Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny (and she was not hard to look at either!). So many great one-liners - “Whatta you, a fookin’ World traveler?” ”Yea, you blend...” ”My biological clock is tickin’ like this (stomping foot)!”
  23. What do you think of the recasting of 007 as a female? Personally, I think it’s a horrible idea... https://thefederalist.com/2019/07/22/a-female-007-leaves-bond-fans-shaken-not-stirred-and-for-good-reason/
  24. “$70,000?? Hell, my suits cost more than that!”
