  1. I'm about 1-1/2 hours east (Asheville) bad times in G'burg. Once again I understand it was arson from fires set in the Great Smokey's I've had fires all around both in the Lake Lure area, about 10 miles away and then in Pisgah National about 20 miles away. The firemen both local and from all over the country have been here a while trying to contain, and now I understand they've moved to Gatlinburg to help. Air quality has been poor at best with lots of very smokey days. We just got a nice day long rain, and more expected today. Hoping the rain helps Gatlinburg too
  2. I've considered this unit as a fun and inexpensive way to play around. Tube Pre Of course I have a few tube pre's still laying around that are soon to find their way to my system now that winter is rolling into town and I'm forced inside.
  3. I own this one, but not actually tested the system. Hmmm, I need to do that this weekend
  4. ++++ I hope to make some progress on my ultrasonic cleaner this week being off from work. I have several hundred albums that need cleaning
  5. Thanks PDR! I am following suit with a diy using the china version off of Ebay (159). I had not seen your diy yet but this has expanded my thoughts on mine. Thanks to Dennis Miller for hyper linking me here. Another DIY for those interested. DIY Ultrasonic

2nd that. But would that "best" be the combination of material and engineering? Engineering-studio and person doing the mixing. Follow that and find one you like I would think? Well, I have determined that any Billy Joel on vinyl are well engineered as what seems to be John Mellancamps stuff I currently own. A lot of the old Jazz and Classical I have inherited is also well done, but that was also when vinyl was the only option

Dang corporate internet filters! Cant search what I want.... If I recall from way back the S curve vs the Straight tonearm comes into play on the opposing signals of the groove. Of course this argument can only be discussed once one agrees upon Chevy or Ford, and White or Wheat bread
  9. Infinity RS-4's My first set of real speakers: I picked them up new at a going out of business auction for a local stereo shop. Would have been around 1980 give or take, which put me around 16 years old. If I recall correctly I had to borrow part of the money from my parents to buy them, which I think I gave $300 for the pair. I was able to buy them before they hit the auction floor, and the people were nice enough to hold them until I came back with the cash. I drove a 1969 Camaro, and made 2 trips to bring them home, one for each speaker. Carefully wrapped them in blankets and laid each one in the back seat. 69 Camaro's had small back seats I had to buy the gold Infinity grill badges directly from Infinity as they were missing. I also picked up a nice set of speaker stands from Crutchfield, which I jokingly tell people I may have placed my order with Bill himself. Carried them with me from college, to homes all the way to around 2002. Sold them..... which I regret, just like selling the 69 Camaro. I've owned many sets of Infinity's all the way up to my RSiii's now. Both in the car and home. That first purchase is what made me an Infinity life long owner
  10. If you like Annie Lennox, this is well worth the $20 for vinyl.
  11. No to sanding with anything that resembles course grit. You may have some luck steam ironing the veneer to remove, but hard to match the cabinet IMO when replacing. You might try rubbing the finish 00 to 0000 steel wool then using a oil similar to Danish Oil You'd either have to luck up and match the color or do the whole cab's Not sure how well this might work on worn veneer such as that but I used Howards on all my Infinity's throughout the years and it keeps them looking new. It might be that multiple rub downs with Howards will restore things?
  12. Well I am already a Prime subscriber but originally it was for upgraded 2 days shipping. I order a lot from Amazon. Over and above the 2 day shipping I get Prime video, not a big TV person but my wife and I enjoy watching seasons of ( fill in blank here ) I also Netflix, but do not have Cable TV. I am still able to donate my money to Charter for their fine high speed service (add lots of laughter here) I read, at times, a lot. I had some beni's from Amazon books through Prime, but just recently went to their unlimited (10/mtn) which pays for itself in the couple books I read a month. As a Amazon Prime I get a certain amount of cloud storage for music (might apply to non-prime???) When I purchase vinyl through Amazon (new) Amazon loads a digital copy into my cloud of which I can D/L and burn to cd. Although being a Linux user, I have to D/L singular songs, not the whole album at once. (not a big deal) Now, I can access over a million songs/albums through my Prime membership and listen on phone app and computer. Not tried it on my ROKU setup I have hooked into the system. Quality sounds equal to MOG and Pandora One IMO but all the listening has been with headphones (in ear) I forgot the exact amount of Prime now, but its right at $100 or less per year. For all I get I am happy. As far as MOG I was following your lead until BEATS now Apple which really blows (not a big Apple Itune fan) Dang as I look back over this post maybe Amazon is Big Brother???
  13. Thoughts on Amazon prime music? The streaming sections seems decent over and above the digital copies of the vinyl albums I have purchased. And added bonus for me is I am able to play through the company network without being blocked by a firewall (yet) Seems equal to Pandora and the other streaming service. Since I am already a Prime subscriber its yet another feature for less than $100 a year
  14. Thanks! Even at the price, not sure if its worth my effort as a "project" I saw the price that thought that was rather low even with the need to rebuild. I knew someone here could shed some light on them
  15. http://asheville.craigslist.org/ele/4583213854.html Anyone know anything about these? I remember reading about Mag's but honestly know nothing about nor ever heard a pair. They are close and the price seems reasonable but in need of rebuilding. Paul
  16. Not sure this would help but thought I mention. A friend of mine is a car salesman (used) and he said when they get a stinky or smoked in car they cut up apples and place them in a container under seats to absorb the smell. Might lock them up in a closet with some apples? Paul
  17. I regret getting rid of the vinyl I had 20 years ago, but enjoying replacing it now
  18. I have no suggestions on songs but will be willing to buy the disk with shared songs Paul
  19. IMHO it will be like everything else and run its cycle. But quality will eventually win out Why is vinyl making a comeback? Its not nostalgia its because the sound is better. (or can be if done correctly) I followed the path of stupidity (and did such well) in my life and music. I had tons of vinyl, then got rid of them all for CD. Then digital mp3 and Itunes comes along. Wow takes up zero space! Move everything to computer formats thin out the cd's KICK myself daily for such. Thats my opinion at least for what its worth. Paul
  20. Welcome! Great bunch of guys here. Vast Knowledge and these guys go out of their way to help one out
  21. Welcome! Great bunch of people here with VAST knowledge. I also own a 1200mkii that I did some rework on and really enjoy! Great TT for the buck Paul
  22. I know nothing about drumming. My ability to keep a beat is similar to Steve Martin finding his rhythm at the begining of the Jerk. I would consider the most popular drummer to be Peart. I've always like Peart, seems like a decent guy in addition to a good drummer. Hey, he's got a lot of drums so he must be good BUT, (and not intended to stir things up) I drink coffee a few mornings a week with a friend who has been a drummer his whole life. He is approx 60 and been playing since he was young. He is in a few bands locally (and has been most of his adult life) and rather knowledgeable on music in a whole. He says Peart is not considered that good inside the drumming community. Said there is a love / hate among drummers with Peart with more against. Paul
  23. I own a set of iiib's of which I purchased late last summer. These speakers had been "went" through which meant upgrade the caps on x-overs, internally braced more and re-foamed. I took them and upgraded the posts. Cabinets were in very good condition. I was lucky I found these within driving distance. I paid $450 if I recall. On top of that was the post upgrades (<$50) and some Herbie feet as they sit on hardwood floos ($100 approx) Ebay prices were what you mentioned, way too high! I have owned Infinity since the late 70's to early 80's and love the sound. I am pleased with these big boys, they suit my listening taste well, or maybe my ears are used to Infinity They are powered by my M1.5, and soon to be testing a 500 mkii on them. Paul
