  1. OK, back to this project. Lots of recent distractions..., some good some frustrating. The grills come off, attached by velcro - which is unusual for EPI of this era, they typically used white silicone caulk as glue to permanently affix the grills to speakers in manufacturing. I didn't have to wrestle these off. I pulled the old drivers out, and remove the old "gaskets" which is really just that white foam, that you find wrapped around new TT dustcovers to protect in transit. You might notice that there are two pots on the back..., one is to adjust by attenuation the high frequencies going through the crossover to the three inverted dome oil-filled tweeters. The second one is for attenuating the front panel output altogether. It's actually a fairly complex crossover. I'm not going to do anything with the crossover at the moment - right now I just want to get the new drivers in, and see how they sound. I find that the mdf in these old speakers typically is fraying or crumbling where the screws were driven in, w/o pre-drilling. What I do with this MDF, is try to "tighten up" the screw holes just a bit, as the screws always just seem to crumble it, like it's a triscit cracker or something. I rub off or cut back any of the "pulling" or fraying of wood chips, with a knife. so the frayed sawdust chips come off, leaving a flat surface to mount the new drivers against. Basically, this is pretty fragile, and very likely to "bust-out" when the new drivers are installed and the screws are driven back in, so I try to make it more solid, by using this technique..., I use some wood glue, and with a toothpick shove a bunch into the screw-hole, to and let it soak in. I wet the wood first, so the glue will soak in a bit beyond the screw hole, and attempt to hold the chips together in the area. I don't want to drillnew holes, as from two pictures up, you see the tweeter plate overlaps the driver, and this method strengthens the screw hole considerably. When done, the screw holes with the glue look like: When the glue dries, I will reinstall the drivers, turning the screws in by hand, carefully..., I've poked a driver foam with a screwdriver that slipped, before...,
  2. Welcome @Rek. Glad you found us. Hard to say if the Carver pieces you have received were ever refreshed in the recent past or not. But in general, these items, if untouched since they were new, or if they were in a challenging environment (a dusty shop?), it's worth having them fully refreshed and adjusted back to new. Many here send their Carver gear to Greg ( @Nahash5150 ) proprietor of Nellion Audio, in Hersey, MI. I'm sure others will pipe in with other questions and recommendations. Again, glad you found us! There's a lot of information here, hope you post a few threads and stay a while. Welcome!
  3. They restore/refresh, just like any other amp..., I recall that thread from @Carlton8000, or another thread, that he (or someone) recapped and refreshed the m240's he had. I've found that the "background noise" or a good portion of it, for me, was actually road noise, or noise generated by the car/cabin acoustics..., I only did one car audio build, when I was in my 20's..., so today, with all the sound deadening, and other things one can do..., I wonder if it's as bad. I have in my garage, a full system, brand new, that I picked up for my F150..., pioneer head unit, infinity cappa speakers for all four doors, and an infinity kappa sub... It's one of those projects I keep putting off. But I know that one thing I must do is put in a lot of sound deadening in the doors, where there's lots of flex from the increased throw and air movement of those Kappa's. I don't think I'll go so far as to deaden the floor of, I'm too lazy to pull out the seats, and carpet, to add it.
  4. I don't really know. KLW was an external partner..., not much on them. I do think that the early plain amp designs, like the m240 had some indirect "Bob" fingerprints on it - but that's just folklore, at this point. Maybe @Ar9Jim can ask Bob sometime?
  5. Welcome, @Shamdaddy, glad you found us. As @jeffs indicated, you should be able to polish the bezel. Novus is a good way. I've added an orbital polisher to minimize the elbow grease required. As for the side caps, I assume you are talking about the side caps that hold the bezel in? I think you can get those from a seller on Ebay, who sells faceplates. he may have them in grey, and black for the m500. I suggest you get a pair, so they color match, and replace both the right and the left. If the ebay source doesn't have them listed presently, find one of his faceplates, and send him a PM on Ebay from another listing, and ask him if he has them..., Ebay listings require a lot of work - and sellers sometimes slip at getting the postings activated regularly. Glad you found us. Let us know more about your gear, and - we LOVE pictures! 😉
  6. Welcome, @DB916GT, looks like you are a new member. Saw the title on a 400. Do tell, what's up? Share a picture or two ask a question, or just brag about your system! Glad you found us, now we need to get to know you. 😉
  7. Welcome to TheCarverSite, @Evanz. Glad you found us. And, yes, please do post some pictures of your gear..., we love pictures! Lots of info here - please hang out and share!
  8. I agree with Balok. Gotta' know what gear you have, to give you any advice. And, don't forget, the Manuals Library - menu at the top, you can also get manuals for most Carver gear by checking out the library for a PDF. Carver Manuals are pretty good at describing setup steps.
  9. Watch Ebay..., the 240 stereo amp pops up every so often 😉
  10. For those that haven't found it..., and are interested..., there is an entire forum here on TheCarverSite for Car Audio. Carver automotive gear - TheCarversite! It was @Carlton8000 that did the Carver multi-amp car audio build in a VW CC..., I found the thread! And, true to the dilemma of finding Car Audio units today..., he sold the car in the end. It's a cool read, if you haven't seen it. His title "Mile Carver Car Audio Install..." seems to be an understatement 😉
  11. And, from 1993, again. Looks like this was their banner year for advertising. The issue with Car Audio, is that people wreck cars, and then they go to the junk yard. Or, they are traded in, and go to third world countries in the tertiary market..., so many of these amps, just don't exist anymore. One can find them, occasionally, on Ebay harvested from a junkyard by an enterprising individual - but they are kind of rare. And, note there are more than just amps. There are crossovers, and even a Head Unit..., I saw one of those on Ebay years ago, NIB.
  12. Here's another ad, from 1993: And one from 1992:
  13. There were ads, back in the day..., And here on the forum, there are a few interesting build-threads..., as in builds in cars. I recall a most recent thread where "Carlton"??, or I forget who, had 6 Carver M240 automobile amps stacked feeding a sound system in a VW. Here's a youtube video on one of the amps. Here's an ad, from 1989: Here's another ad from 1993:
  14. Welcome, @Bobh, Glad you found us. I'm not a tech, but there are some here that may respond. Just a heads-up that this is a volunteer community of Carver afficianado's and fans..., not really a tech support site - although there are many technical threads of work, restorations, refreshes and repairs for many many Carver components - that's what the volunteer aspect is. We welcome you to start thread on your repair and contribute to the community with your diagnosis and repair. That will likely get more volunteers to pipe in over the next few days/weeks. Most of the techs that are members here are in business, and don't visit that often - they are just swamped with Carver and non-Carver work as I understand it. There are some hobbyist techs too that are exceptionally skilled, they are likely the first to respond, if they can. FWIW, the MXR-130 is a beloved receiver, and there are many examples of restorations and repairs in the forums. You could browse the receiver section, or use the SEARCH function - that will also help guide your research..., beware, there is a LOT here, and search will give you lots of threads to peruse..., and may take time. Again, welcome, glad you found us, and enjoy the deep resources here in the threads. Oh, btw, do you have the docs and schematics for the MXR-130 to work from? If not, check out the manuals library (top of page, main menu "Manuals and Specsheets".
  15. It's been done before. And, probably a good thing to do - your choice, as @xavionics notes, on whether you want to go with high-end caps, or basic ones. I've not recapped my Amazing crossovers, but other speakers. I used capacitors from Parts Express for the purpose - they seem to have a good selection of radial caps for speaker crossovers, of reasonable quality. Share some pictures as you do this project! 😉 We'd love to watch. Oh, yes, be sure to search, or review the threads in the Speaker forum, as I recall this project being done before and documented in a thread on the site.
  16. Welcome, @cljunior, so glad you found us. Looking forward to your participation. Don't forget to post some pictures of your gear!! 😉 We love picturs.
  17. Welcome, @Tuesfurioza, so glad you found us. Actually, while there is less knowledge in the knowledge base on car audio, some things are here (check out Manuals library, and threads in the Auto audio forums you can find by scrolling down on the home page, or using SEARCH. There have been some here that have delved into automobile audio. And, why not become the expert? Post your work, and stories, for others to benefit, as you travel down your journey with your Carver M-4120. I'm looking forward to seeing your threads. Again, welcome!
  18. Check with Les, at Circuits and Concepts on the controls/knobs/buttons. He at one time had a full complement to offer. send him a PM on Ebay, or here on this site, he's a member under the same name as his Ebay selling account. Love that MXR-150, I have one just like it, wood sides, it's so elegant. Welcome to the site, @RAD150, so glad you found us.
  19. Welcome, @Robert G. Atkinson, Jr., great to have you aboard. And, you found a manual, how's that for Return on Investment, in short order? Can't wait to hear more about your system, what speakers you have, and input sources. We LOVE pictures! 😉
  20. I'm sure many have done the replacements. However, the only person I personally know of that replaced drivers in a pair of Amazings, is @Ar9Jim, a few years ago..., IIRC. Jim, do you have any more insight?
  21. BTW, if anyone wants to, or does, because they need them, please let this thread know if they are in stock, or out of stock... Someone on the sister Facebook group indicated that they were out of stock a couple years ago..., but they did tell him when they would be in stock, but then he bought the last of their stock..., so they may still be out of stock... Thanks
  22. OK, light forensics..., does this make sense? There's another company, OreVox..., and somewhere (elusive to pinpoint) Orevox and Dynavox joined? Or is it that "Dynavox" was a brand, not a company, and the speaker just happened to have it's own website... Some elusive posts on AK about it. So, I went to the OREVOX website..., and on the home page, is a picture of the Dynavox driver, and it's even called "12" Carver Amazing Loudspeaker Paper Cone Woofer Driver"..., here's the link... https://orevox.com/12inch-Carver-Amazing-Loudspeaker-Paper-Cone-Woofer-Driver So, maybe it's just a simple website change? And the drivers are still available? BTW, there's some kind of supplement/pharmaceutical product called DynaVox, upper case "V", so maybe (speculating here) there was a conflict that lawyers figured out, causing the old website to go away... I dunno - just am glad to see these still available, and and a good price.
  23. Welcome, @KevinG, glad you found us. This site thrives by having great members join, and add threads on their service or DIY projects..., that's the library of threads you see, that may help you, too. When you can, please post your project, diagnosis, and solution..., we also love Pictures !! 😉 Welcome again, and great to have you join!
  24. Welcome @ans1.1, glad you found us. Check out the many threads on the C-9. Hope to see some pictures of your projects in new threads... 😉
  25. I understand this to be Huw Powell's idea of humor..., that line array may be in his lab, or living room, but he's not selling them..., unless..., of course, someone actually choked up the cash !! LoL. 😉
