My 20 year old son (Zack) has been playing in MIT's jazz combo for the last few years. At his request I've been ripping fusion and classic jazz albums to his Dropbox account. That process has me listening to a lot of titles I haven't heard recently. Zack and his roommate are currently arranging Moanin', a song Bobby Timmons wrote. From the Post a reply box left click the Insert Image icon (top toolbar, 4th icon from the right). From there you can insert a public image link or browse to a file on your hard drive. Once the file has uploaded click OK, then click INSERT.

In the 80's and 90's Marshall made a line of hybrid "Valvestate" amps with valve preamps and SS amps. They were very capable of emulating the tube sound but they didn't sell very well. Stand in front of a cranked Fender Twin or Marshall half stack and tell me they don't play loud enough. Seriously though, most guitarists/bassists in bands who play large venues employ huge stacks of chained amps. (Or they mike one or a few amps and feed that through the sound system.)

You can easily add Sonic Holography to any system with the relatively inexpensive, stand-alone C-9. Member 4krow sells refreshed and modded units. Lots of threads about them in the proc mods forum. You can also add the warmth of tubes by installing a tube buffer, between source and preamp, or in a tape loop. For more info on tube buffers read Mobile Fidelity X-10D clone (Top Secret, Shhhh!)

I have an old Denon DCM-35 CDC that was also noisy. A little grease on the gears helped quite a bit.
