  1. Cellophane from the 70's would be yellowed by now. It's probably BOPP (bi-axially oriented polypropylene).
  2. The song Black Betty began as a work or marching chant with roots dating back to the 18th century. (The term "black betty" may refer to a flintlock musket, a whip, a liquor bottle, or a penitentiary wagon.) The 1st known recording was made at Central State Prison Farm in 1933. The 1st commercial recording was made by Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter in 1939. In 1977 it was a big hit for Ram Jam (the version most of us are familiar with): Since then there have been literally 100's of covers of the song. Here are just a few: (this version was used in the 2004 movie Dukes of Hazzard)
  3. An excellent idea Doug. I'm gonna add that to my SOP for soldering XLR's.
  4. I find it's helpful to use a 3rd hand tool.
  5. On his 1988 solo album Born 2 B Blue Steve Miller covers lots of well known jazz artists. This interpretation of Horace Silver's Filthy McNasty is one of my favorites. An extended live version by the Horace Silver Quintet from 1961:
  6. BTBAM's cover of Metallica's Blackened
  7. Here's another thread on cover songs ==> Good cover versions Maybe Admin can join them?
  8. Howdy mrbert62 and welcome to the forum. Nice to have you on board. Please post photos of your toys so we don't have to beg. There are several ways to do that but this method works best for me: From the Post A Reply window click on the Insert Image applet icon on the top tool bar. It allows you to upload files as large as 14 MB and automatically resizes them to 800 x 600. From there you can insert a public link or browse to a file on your hard drive. Once the file has uploaded click OK, then click INSERT.
  9. The IP 65 standard addresses dust and water resistance. To make it air tight you'd need an explosion-proof fitting. Honestly I doubt a small amount of air leakage will be an issue for this application.
  10. I used Neutrik locking flush-mount TRS sockets in my patch panel build. As you can see from this photo they have a larger OD than an XLR. They do make a flangeless, non-combo version for a cord end but they are virtually the same diameter as an XLR Perhaps this locking 3.5mm (1/8" mini) TRS jack and socket would do the trick?
  11. I have ended up with many a duplicate, DSoTM (3x), Who (3x), Fleetwood Mac(4x),... If I am in a hurry, the not-so-good one plays in a changer, otherwise the better recording plays in a 490t. I have noticed the human brain will enrich music from memory and fill in the gaps quite often. I have close to 30,000 titles on CD, LP, 45, 78, RTR and cassette, and probably 20% is not fit for critical listening. Many of my favorites were poorly recorded to start with (for instance early Blue Oyster Cult and Wishbone Ash). Others titles I only have on cassettes that were recorded in the 60's and 70's before I had a DBX compander. That doesn't prevent me from enjoying the music while searching for better sounding versions.
  12. While vinyl sales are rising it's a niche market at best and will remain so for the foreseeable future. These charts listing music sales by units and dollars are more representative. (Albums are in green.)
  13. Z... next time you plan to drive up, let me know. If you can bring some jewel cases, it would be wonderful, and please do expect compensation for them. Sorry I wasn't clear LT. I meant that I've had the same issue i.e. opened a jewel box and found the CD missing. That said, I do have a few spare hard plastic jewel boxes that you are welcome to, and would like to get together. FYI: I've been using these slim polypropylene CD/DVD cases to replace broken ones, and for mailing. In bulk they cost less than $0.20 each and they don't crack when shipped like hard plastic cases. They also use 1/2 the shelf space of a standard jewel box (important when you have as many as I do ).
  14. Howdy phfowol and welcome to the forum. Glad you found us. Any 30+ year old electronics will need to be recapped in order to meet it's original specs. And due to the tight quarters the M-400 is one of the more difficult amps to rebuild. That said several members have gotten good at it and there is lots of info about the process. Here's a few threads that you should read: M400t Parts List M400/M400a/M400t Service Manuals M-400 Recap Advice M-400t Refurb M400t Binding Post Upgrade JVanDykeTX is the C-4000 guru but he hasn't been around recently and never posted much about the details. Member and pro service tech BassPig did his own, plus a few for customers, but again no details are available. While the OM doesn't list a 2 ohm rating for the M-400a the manual indicates it's doable: Let us know how that combo works out for you. Also tell us a lttile about yourself and post some pix of you toys so we don't have to beg you for them.
  15. THANK YOU!!! That's exactly what I was hoping for! I'll order some caps and post up once I start this project. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions along the way, this will be the first time I've done this. I did replace the power supply caps in my 1.5, I think the guy that sells that kit is an active member here but not positive?? Anyhow, much appreciated!! The guy who designed and sells that 50/80v daughter board would be Les aka circuitsandconcepts. FYI: Carver is known for tweeking designs and not documenting the changes. Best to check Mark's list against what is actually in your unit before ordering.
  16. Howdy Matt and welcome to the forum. Nice to have you on board. Hope you stick around for a while. Nice looking speakers! Thanks for not making us beg for photos. I'm curious why you offset the tweeters in the first 2 builds versus aligning them in a D'appolito configuration?
  17. Apparently I missed this comment as I recently traded an A1-I for four SL3000 tweeters and two MW6503 mids. A few Polkies said I got ripped off because A1-I's sell for upwards of $250 and the drivers were worth about half that. I think they were jealous THEY didn't make the deal, and I'm OK with it as we needed the drivers for Zack's 1.2tl's. Anyway, you have several options for driving your SDA's with common ground amps: 1. the previously mentioned A1-I SDA Non-Common Ground Amplifier Interface ($150-250) 2. running without SDA and using sonic holography to achieve a similar effect (free if you use your C-11) 3. build an interface using a stock cable and these instructions: http://polksda.com/A1_Interconnect.pdf ($30-50) FYI: We're using a recapped M-1.5t to drive them and the bass is surprisingly punchy in Zack's 500 sf bedroom. We haven't tried bi-amping them yet as there are a few caps in the right crossover that I need to replace 1st.
  18. Congrats on the new speakers Mike. Glad you are happy with them. I'll try to be patient but.....
  19. In 1973 I joined the US Air Force... and sold my Honda 750K2 IN 1974 I BOUGHT A NEW STEREO....and had it shipped to my room in Cheyenne,Wyoming OHM F SPEAKERS...........$900 PHASE LINEAR 4000.......$600 PHASE LINEAR 400........$500 THORENS TD-160C..........$300 SHURE V15-3......................$50. -------- $2,350 BX/PX pricing was awesome. I was stationed at a remote site (Camp Mercury, NV) but it was only 80 miles to Nellis AFB.
  20. The Sheffield Labs LPs are some of my favorite recordings. In addition to Tower of Power Direct these are worth picking up:.
