  1. Yep. That was the 1st thing I did after powering up. They seem to be A-OK. That's a great idea. I'll keep that in mind for the next time. Another great tip Tronman. THANKS!
  2. I was going to start repairing the surrounds today but my tube of rubber glue is dated 1996. I decided not to take a chance with it and changed gears to cleaning the mid woofer cones. In some of my original photos you may have noticed what looks like water spotting on the cones. I suspect the original owner may have sprayed cat repellant on them as a preventative measure. A Polk site member suggested wiping them down with a soft cloth soaked with Windex. It took a couple of wet/dry cycles but most of the "water spots" are gone now and the cones are uniformly tacky. 3. Yes, I have BOTH ICs, the stock cable that came with SDA speakers, and the A1-I for non-common ground amps. We are currently driving the 1.2tl's in SDA mode with an M-1.5t (common ground), I'd like to try bi-amping them but not until the surrounds have been repaired/replaced.
  4. This is vulcanizing rubber adhesive Kevin. I got the idea from a guy on the Polk forum. Apply a thin bead to both edges of a rip with a toothpick then mate them edge to edge. The adhesive remains flexible when cured and the joint will stand up to internal pressure.
  5. As I noted earlier, I plan to begin by sealing the rips, tears and pinholes with rubber inner tube adhesive. If that doesn't work I see no downside to replacing the surrounds with a similar butyl rubber product. I don't see how that could be worse than leaving them unsealed. Unless I win the lotto a complete restoration/upgrade is just not in my budget.
  6. Thanks Tronman. I'm sure that'll come in handy down the road. That would be great. THANKS!
  7. Travis, Tronman, Kevin and Doug: Thanks a bunch for all of your suggestions, technical information, links and spare parts offers. These are my first Polks so the knowledge and experience you have shared is greatly appreciated. Being a cheap b@st@rd I'm going to start by attempting to repair one of the existing surrounds. I have an unopened tube of rubber glue from an inner tube patch kit that should be compatible. I'll let y'all know how that goes, and post more photos as the project proceeds.
  8. Thanks for the offer Travis but the 1.2tl uses 4 MW6503's for stereo and 4 MW6511's for SDA (per speaker). I'm pretty sure I'll be able to repair the surrounds with rubber glue. Failing that I'll install new 2nd party surrounds. FYI: The surrounds have not deteriorated. Apparently the rips, tears and pinholes come courtesy of David's cats.
  9. The grill you recovered with window screen actually held up pretty well David. It just doesn't look as good as grill cloth and probably isn't acoustically transparent. Before I replace the surrounds I'm going to try glueing the rips and tears together with inner tube adhesive. It's made for rubber, stays flexible, and creates a vulcanized seal that should be air tight (if the seams align).
  10. Maybe he had an off day but his quote was for 12 pieces ($24) and he didn't include adhesive. Not a good start. Have you dealt with this seller in the past Kevin?
  11. True 'dat. I messaged the ebay seller to see if he has more, and to get a quantity price with combined shipping.
  12. My son Zack was recently gifted a set of one-owner Polk SDS-SRS 1.2tl's by member dcl. These massive speakers (63" tall and 180 pounds each) were TOTL for Polk in the late 80's/early 90's. They hadn't been used in a while and the grill and corner cloth on both speakers had been trashed by his cats. A look-see on pickup day revealed a dented mid bass dust cap and rips/tears in several mid bass surrounds. The natural oak finish needed a good oiling but overall was in pretty good shape. After trucking them from the DC area we hauled them up to Zack's 22' x 22' bedroom and set them up. A closer look at the mid bass surrounds revealed damage to all ranging from pinholes to inch wide rips. The 1.2's are sealed speakers so I was a bit concerned about how they would perform with the seal breached. We hooked them up to Zack's bedroom system - a recapped M-1.5t, CT-7, DTL-200MK2 and MP3 player. I was relieved when they sounded excellent at low and medium volume and only started to chuff a bit a high SPL. A few days later Zack was out at a friend's house for a overnighter so I decided to do some work on them. David included enough material to redo both speakers (and then some) so I started with one of the speaker grills. Pretty simple: remove the staples and old cloth, lay the frame on the new material, cut to fit, stretch and staple. Here's the recovered grill (left) next to an original (apparently recovered once before with black window screen?): Another shot with the recovered grill mounted (the side panel that has been removed is my next project): Lots more to come once Zack is back at school.

It should also be available in the Library but I see it's not. Maybe Admin will add the link so you can access it.

  15. I'd add Beth Hart to the list of recommendations. She has a powerful voice remiscent of Etta James and Janis Joplin.
  16. Sweet deal! You can never have too much power...
  17. Same kind of power steering in the others. Just no bridging to mono switch or hookup.Bob's marketing folks gave us the terminology but "power steering" is available in most 2 channel amps with a common transformer.
  18. Three stacks of modular Tree Dimensions units on castor bases: I bolted them together so I can roll them away from the wall as a unit:
  19. Congrats on your new (to you) toys. NICE SCORE!
  20. Roy's first new release in about 5 years takes him back to his roots. THANKS Dennis!
  21. Nice to have you back Joe. What have you been up to? Better yet, post some pix for us!
  22. The M-1.5(t) is NOT bridgeable, but connect only right or left and it can "borrow" power from the unused channel.
