  1. I thought this would generate some great conversation. Thanks everyone for possible solutions. I am glad you chimed in Steve. I know you know your vinyl. Yes, I am sure that the vinyl itself will need cleaning. I am playing a jazz record right now and it does have a lot of ticks and pops. But the smell is predominately coming from the jackets and sleeves. I am waiting for Perry (PDR) to finish his ultrasonic cleaner. I would like to try that for the vinyl. I do have madmike46's DIY record cleaner. That will have to wait until after the 4th. (Big party here). . For the jackets maybe letting them sit in the driveway on a dry sunny day will help then baking soda..
  2. I have probably 1200 and maybe more vinyl albums. Most have been in storage in sealed boxes for 30 + years. Stored in numerous places and climates as I traveled from base to base in the Navy. I know that some of this vinyl has not seen light since before my first daughter was born 28 years ago. I have pulled favorite titles from time to time and keep them handy. Today I had to go to the storage unit and opened every box to pull some more. I probably pulled fifty. Today is hot and humid and I can smell the musty paper and cardboard jackets in the van driving home. I bring them down to my shop. The smell is horrible. I had to take them out to the garage. So I am bringing in one at a time. Any suggestions on drying them out and removing the odor? My vinyl was always handled with care. The jackets not so much. There is a lot of edge damage from shelf wear so I am not to concerned about preservation of mint jackets.
  3. Nice Terry. I have never heard these before but I have always admired their cabinets.
  4. Deoxit fixes noisy pots most of the time. There are a lot of post on this receiver packed with lots of useful information. There you will find most of the common problems associated with this great receiver. If you have specific questions please ask. As you can see from my signature line I like the MXR-130. In addition to my garage and shop I have another set up at my new home construction site. There I can really crank it. MXR-130 Owners Manual This receiver does not have a remote controller.
  5. That is a great room Perry. I have always been impressed with your system and room treatments. I am sure I have seen each of the pictures in past post, but it is great to see them in one place from beginning to now.
  6. First thing I would do is open her up top and bottom. Blow out the dust. Look for any suspicious components. Burnt or dark resisters. Bulging or leaking caps. Check the fuse first. If it is blown then you know something is amiss. And if you have a variac, yes by all means use it. Can you monitor the current at the same time?

  8. Nice! Thanks for sharing your work.
  9. Now that looks like a nice and complete set. Enjoy.
  10. Here is a product that should work: These are fixed and he may have to experiment with different amounts of attenuation. 1 db > Parts Express Part # 266-230 3 db > Parts Express Part # 266-232 6 db > Parts Express Part # 266-234
  11. As promised David, here is a PDF scan from the back of my Sonic Holography Test LP. Enjoy!
  12. It looks like your scope also gives you an empirical value of both channels in addition to the sweep. Mine does not. Both signals are equal and in phase with each other. It looks good to me.
  13. I forgot you use an external TT preamp. Yes just connect your scope to these outputs. If your TT preamp has RCA output jacks you will need 2 BNC to RCA adaptors. That way you can use two RCA to RCA interconnects to hook up to the scope inputs. I found a track list for your test lp at DisCogs . It looks like track A8 (1 kHz Triangle Wave -14 db, Both Channels, In Phase) could tell you a lot about your setup. When viewing this track on the scope the sides of the triangle (saw tooth) should be flat on both sides. If they are not it might indicate a problem with your cartridge, interconnects, or your TT preamp. I would suspect a problem if the trace has shark fin shape. Track A9 (1 kHz, -14 db, Both Channels, In Phase) could also be used to verify the right and left levels. The other tracks are interesting. I would have to read the instructions on the lp cover to understand how to use them. Looks like a great test lp. Hope this helps.
  14. Which test record did you get? I have a brand new HIFI News Test LP. Side 2 has a couple of tracks that are 400hz at 15 db on both channels. I am sure your test lp has some similar tracks. Just look for a track with steady tone with equal recorded levels on both channels. Connect your oscope to your tape out (or external processor out) on the pre. You don't want to use any of the preamps outputs after the line amps and tone controls. Sync both channels on the scope with the same level and display. Also make sure the channels level controls are in the Cal position. While observing both channels move trace b up and over trace a. If they are in phase and of the same level the display should completely hide the other and look like one trace.
  15. Nice! I look forward to seeing the completed work. I see you have a panel saw. I have always wanted one and I could really use one in the next few months for a big cabinet project.
  16. The vinyl version has a few additional tracks specific to setting up a cartridge.
  17. Welcome!
  18. Nice! Thanks for sharing.
