I'm a big fan of Goldwood woofers myself. Replaced the 10" RS woofers I found on my new-to-me ESS AMT TOWER I's a few years ago. Out of the box, they sounded very good and only got better with constant use. Can certainly hold their own against the ESS 10" woofers that eventually took their spot on the Towers. Coincidentally, I also found a pair of 12" RS woofers on my Dahlquist DQ-10's. If I can somehow figure out how to fabricate an adapter ala Advents on DQ-10's for the Goldwoods, they will back with their wonderful sound.

Looking to find some speakers that can really handle 500 watts per channel or more. Ideas please!!! And I dont want to have to have a sub to get all the bass I want. For your consideration-the Snell Type A-2's. They have subwoofer-like low bass and a healthy appetite for power, just as you specify. Big sound from big speakers with a wide SH soundstage and with their active bi-amping capability, will make your M-4.0t's work out. Terrific midrange, too. I love my Snells...thanks for the post about them Kevin!

Aja is one of my all-time favorite album and have been listening to its seven-odd tracks at least once week since '78 when I first heard it on my brod-in-law's system. Still have my vinyl, regular cd, and a remastered cd. I can't imagine how the sound could be improved any further given its already excellent sound but if prices of ultra-hi def versions become more affordable, I won't hesitate to go for one. It has become to me like The Beatles' Rubber Soul where I already could hear in my mind the first notes of the next track. You folks know what I mean. Steve Gadd's short pause on the drums highlight of "Aja" track is one good example of what Kev calls negative space where all players stop playing for a sec and then continue playing. Shows who's in control of the tempo and adds a little drama to that section of the song. Same with Jim Keltner's pauses on "Josie". I love all the songs but I seem to listen closer every time with " I Got The News". I don't know the proper description for them but I just love Victor Feldman's occasional piano embellishments. Kind of out of tune but not exactly. The sound quality is up there with the best of them as is the playing by numerous studio players most of whom have continued or proceeded to make high quality music on their own. Personally, Two Against Nature, a follow-up album after like twenty years is not on par with Aja's easy to hum-along melodies of the songs and hardly see action on my systems. I often wonder how the album would sound if it were recorded with today's technology but with everything else exactly the same. There goes my non-technical appreciation of Aja, Kev and don't start me with Rush's Moving Pictures.

Do you have your gear running on 110v. with a stepdown transformer? I have my system there hooked on a 3K Watts Meiji AVR , an over-kill but better safe than sorry. I'll probably take my M1.5t with me when it's safe to visit again. As you probably have found out already, there's a lot of info on your amps in the site. Lots of nice and knowledgeable folks, too. But beware: if you haven't seen it on CNN, there's a site-grown malaise called the OCCD virus that is much more virulent than that less contagious -19. In fact, the CDC and Dr Fauci have raised the white flag and accepted defeat-no vaccine in sight for at least 100 years. Makes your immune system totally ineffective against enablers like kve777, Daddyjt, Sk1Bum, and other hopeless carriers. No economic stimulus will help maintain peace with the wife, either. ***** Breaking News ***** The CDC just announced that the OCCD virus actually helps prolong life, if you're lucky to make it past your wife.

Was it Mr. Jimmy, Greg? Those guys are fantastic! I haven't heard them live but watching their You Tube videos will tell you why the original Jimmy is a fan himself. And their frontman has Robert's range and voice quality. Since they try to, and are capable of playing the songs note for note like the original, they indeed would make you think they're better than the Zep. To be fair, the latter as far as I could tell,, didn't really play their songs live as they recorded them.

It's been a steady progression in sound quality of recordings of the same old, and occasional newer music, that I listen to. From the lp to the cd to some remastered and sacd versions. Unfortunately, a remaster does not necessarily sound better occasionally. Just bought The Doors' debut album. It sounds harsh to me. But for the most part, my remastered purchases were well worth it.Take for instance my small Fab Four collection. Bought all their lp's when I came to the States and later bought the MoFi boxed collection that mostly remained boxed as the cd soon took over. Excitedly bought the first Beatles cd's on the first day of release and immediately returned them as they were in mono! Bought all cd's when later released in stereo. A few years ago, the remastered boxed collection came out and I of course didn't think twice and pre-ordered it from Amazon. And now, the re-mixes starting with Pepper. Bought the cd of course and love most of the resulting change which I was wishing for years ago. Eagerly awaiting to willingly spend part of my pension for the rest of EMI's remixed gold mine. A holographic version will be the ultimate re-hash and if I'm still around, I'll gladly contribute to EMI's and the Beatles' pot. Yet again. While I'm at this, please allow me to speak my mind further. Aside from a couple of their post Terry Kath lp's, I never bothered with Chicago's music other than the greatest hits. So it's a great pleasure to acquire their Quadio surround boxed set and hear for the first time their early releases. The multi-channel cd's sound, in a word, amazing to these ears. If you're a Chicago fan, IMHO, it's the best bang for the buck available as far as sound quality is concerned. It breaks my heart that the guitar wiz who made those unique but now very familiar wah-wah driven licks left this world at such a young age. So there you go-it's for the increase in sound quality of the same music that I've been listening to since my teens that I mostly spend my dispensable money on. I rarely buy cd's of artists whose music I'm not familiar with and when I do, it's because of their superb sound quality as per feedbacks on Amazon and occasionally, what site members listen to.

This is an easy one....DIGITAL. Vinyl surface had always bothered me (it still does) that trips to Tower Records on Sunset Blvd. to exchange noisy lp's were a regular part of life... until '83. I still have my Sony CDP-302, which was preceded by one whose model number now escapes me. Have since jumped to the oppo bandwagon with the 971, 981, and 83SE, all purchased well beyond their expiry dates. Went through a platoon of portables I listened to at work until I bought a couple of Creative Lab Nomad Zen Xtra mp3 players for the convenience. Haah, no more bagful of cd's to carry around. Got an Audio Technica USB/TT just for the heck of it but vinyl is definitely now just for the nostalgia. Those were the days, my friends....

FWIW, and from personal experience albeit with a totally different set of speakers, I am inclined to opine that there's nothing seriously wrong with the subject speaker, otherwise it will not play well in relative loudness. It could be that some components in it may have just deteriorated from age and a free hand with the volume knob more so than the other speaker that it can't play louder past a certain point and blows its fuse when played louder than that "threshold". The fuse on my left channel DQ-10 used to pop open with regularity but more from transient, high frequency notes than from over-all louder than normal-to-me volumes. Haven't happened to the right speaker's fuse. Experienced this with two different amps(Crown PSA-2D & SF 300x2) so I would say it's not the amp. Didn't feel the need to switch the speaker cables to see if the other fuse pops up, too. Needless to say, slightly lowering the volume is the simplest fix if indeed the speaker is just showing its age, like mine was. Or it could also be why they lowered the speakers' power handling rating-to make a subtle warning that they cannot handle that much power and play that loud safely. I think it's safe to say that Bob didn't design his speakers for brute loud playing although to my ears, they are more than loud! Nevertheless, with all the amp power available to most of us and the belief that our speakers can handle anything, moderation is easier said than done. Turning the knob increasingly closer to the right is so tempting and...fulfilling...then a trip to the Shack for the next cache of fuses follows. My electronics know-how is limited to remove and replace so it's close to nothing. Hence, this is a very simplistic but practical take on an issue that may be more serious but costly to diagnose and fix. It costs you nothing and your ears will love you for it. Unfortunately, it's too late to follow my own advise. Tinnitus!!
