This may seem as an aside, but it's not. Yesterday, I replaced a selector switch in my amp. I had more than one reason to do it, but as it applies to this sort of noise reduction, this configuration of the switch allowed me to switch not only the signal from one source to another, but the grounds as well. To that end, RCA caps have no relevance for unused inputs.

I use them just to keep the connections clean. I mean, look at all of the possibilities for say, RF to enter a component. The vents for one thing in a lot of equipment are wide open to RF nasties. I buy the cheap, gold plated Chinese kind from Ebay for $10-15. You get like 10 or more shipped for that price. I'm not against the AC outlet covers either. They look cool, keep the dust out and that's about it.

Lyman, I am supposing that it worked on the TT cover. The question that I might have is about the many different plastics and how they would respond to a polish.

Come to think of it, my Emotiva claims to be able to play any CD sized disc. Ah, the format wars will keep the money flowing from us to them.
-
I tried using a special CD polish once and as careful as I was, I ended up making very light scratches in the disc. The original idea from the seller was to make perfectly flat, the surface that the laser had to read. Looking back it sounds like just another sales product. In the case of an already damaged CD, the polishing idea is More Better. Ummm, just trying to fit in guys.

CKJ, Welcome, and I must say that building your own speakers is the kind of thing that brings renewed life to your passion. Never forget to ask, "What if?" then try it.

This subject kinda made me laugh, remembering that back in the day (sometime between high school and marriage), I used to test out my speakers with the Frankenstein track from 'They only come out at night' by Edgar Winter. In some ways, it wasn't a bad track, and at the time I had some folded bass horns that made sure that you felt the low end.

I love my buddy, but he lives in the stone age. Since a week ago, he talked to a salesman who told him that the drivers he was selling were made in the same town as the Nobis speakers.....God help me to explain such things about such things. Hey, what the hell, $60 for a set of two and he is happy...and the salesman too.

I do not know the TS parameters of the bass drivers. My friend is not tech friendly, so photos will not be an option. I did speak with him today, and he contacted Madisound and talked to someone there who seemed competent enough to suggest a replacement. Since the TS parameters of the original driver is not known, this could well be a hunt and peck strategy. I told my buddy to keep me posted as to the progress that he might make. In turn I may seek out here again. It is frustrating trouble shooting over the phone with the ignorant.

A buddy of mine in Florida has blown the bass driver out in his Nobis DM5 speakers. This is a real shot in the dark, but would any of you know of a replacement driver for it? He has only told me that he thinks it is a 6.5" peerless driver with a 4 ohm rating. I would need more than that to recommend a replacement, and have not found much info on the web.

Shapes, designs, building material. They are all over the page of thought. I suppose that speaker could even be designed for a specific listening room. I enjoy looking at the various ideas, but in the end, physics must be our template. So to answer your question, almost every physical parameter affects the outcome of sound from a speaker. I have always been surprised at how well rectangular boxes sell when they introduce common mode frequencies in the first place. Boxy cars to boxy houses, these are the easiest to build.

"The total weight of ant bodies on this earth roughly equals the total weight of human bodies." Queen of ants.

Good responses guys. Seems that they fall into the convenience category more than serious listening. I do have an extension cable that helps a little, and I own an old pair of Senns that should probably be replaced. The ear pads are shot, and the phones always sounded a bit light to me.

This seemed to be as good a place for this topic as any. I almost never use headphones, but I am wondering if it is because I don't like the leash. If that is true, then perhaps a good pair of wireless types would be worth trying. What experience do you guys have with these things and what are your opinions of them?
-
Guys, I am still laughing. It is difficult to type. I couldn't have come up with better stories if I tried. And the fact there is reference to the product right in the manual, gets me to wondering if Mr. C isn't screwing with us. Of course, I know that there are reasons, but what a surprise it was to wander down this road and read the things I have read. Makes me pretty sure that you guys are stuck with me by the sake of similarity.

Guys, The only thing that I want to mention is that this thread has some great information. I kinda scanned through it, but it just amazes me how long this medium has been around, and how many new ideas were made to improve it's playback and recording. I do remember an ad that I saw in Stereo Review maybe by Empire Cartridges. It showed one hand holding a record by means of a pencil stuck through the center hole, and the other hand holding the cartridge to the groove. It Read: "This is all we are trying to do, but more perfectly." I never forgot that ad.

Bro, In my opinion, you have got the deal of a lifetime. I built the Speakerlab 'K horns', and havealso owned the S30? (I forget the exact model number). In the end, I was very impressed with both. Actually, I like the S30 better. It was a 3 way with 12" bass, 6" mid, 1" tweet. I have not heard of the S50 before, but I just know that these guys had a genuine interest in fidelity and quality. Hell, as I recall, the made many of their own drivers, and even had a giant 'magnetizer' they called "Magnatron" for the drivers magnets, IIRC. Maybe it all makes sense due to their past, being engineers for Boeing('Boing' heh heh)

Finally! Not the best file, but at least it worked. Now this is the OB speaker that I was referring to. The design is from Decware, and uses a cavity to produce bass. It is tuned to about 40hz, but the is adjusted to cover a wider range. As an experimentor, This next photo is using the baffle upside down, using the cavity actively. In that application, An Audio Nirvana 8" cast frame, Alnico magnet driver was used.
-
Anyone looked at what Audio Nirvana has to offer in coax speakers?
-
Coax speakers. Now that would be great to hear. I have never heard any before.
-
I was surprised as you when I heard my first OB speakers. BIG sound, wide soundstage, and more bass than I was told. That led me to explore, just like you. I came to building an OB design sold by Decware. It's called the ZOB(Zen Open Baffle). Now, while it is out of the price range that you had mentioned, The cabinets could be built rather cheaply if you were to find solid materials. Paint can cover a multitude of sins. Having said that, you also wouldn't be required to use the drivers that Decware sells. That is what I have, but I also tried Audio Nirvana drivers, that were amazing at half the price. Fortunately, there is a mountain of available drivers for just such an experiment.
