I have looked at this post numerous times and the same question keeps coming back. Why would anyone ever pack a 10 watt resistor into a stack of other components and not think that there would be serious trouble down the line? It comes to my mind to at least get these firecrackers off of the board by at least 1/2" and let them breath! It even occurs to me that I might have mounted them on the opposite side of the board to shield most of the heat from the unintended victims in the first place. Not to mention some kind of heat shield between the resistor and the Masonite board (flammable). I don't think that I am out of line for pointing this out. I should also say that Thiel speakers are among the best that I have ever heard, and the build quality was excellent. This came as a bit of a surprise to me.

After reading the OP again, it seems that the trouble could be about an RCA jack connection. A fix can be as simple as reconnecting the RCA cables in and out a few times, to replacing the offending RCA jack. In that case, there will be a little surgery involved.

Welcome to the site, and yes, you will find just what you need in the way of advice for these issues. Thing is, there are few things that can cause the issue mentioned. Cleaning the controls is a good start, and now you can also eliminate circuitry by switching out the tone controls, sonic holography, and even the rumble filter located on the back panel. Having done this will allow you to determine the possible offending circuit. Keep us posted, and if you get a chance, there some situations that photos are helpful.

Ron, Welcome to the site. You will find all kinds of interesting info here, even outside of Carver equipment. One of my favorites is the psyco-acoustic effects that our brains process. That has always been an interest to me (no doubt this technique is used with Sonic Holigraphy). Excuse my spelling, and welcome to the site. Greg

Just another one of those formats that didn't win the war./

Dammm, remember the Sony 'EL-CASETTE?"

So true. The old stuff is fascinating. Think 'Futterman'.

First of all, I recently had a hearing test, and found what I already knew to be true. My hearing is not what it used to be. Maybe that explains why I am no longer annoyed by someone turning a page of a newspaper, or other distractions that used to be everywhere. Now, mind you, that I Cringe! even as I type this, but I should at least express what I am finding in just the few minutes that I have begun to audition a device from about 20 years ago. It was made by Acoustic Research, and I heard one 15 years ago, and didn't like it. It is called an 'AR Sound Enhancer', which has a particularly bad ring to it's name. I bought it on Ebay for $45 shipping included, and it indeed had never had the box opened. Let me try to skip pass the BS, and get to the point. Think of it as a loudness control. It is a transformer device that increases the signal level (I hate that part), and adjusts, if you will, the frequency response to increase bass and treble. Because of this, I can play my system a little louder before I find the midrange to be particularly edgey. That has been a problem for my ears for some time now.Using an old Yamaha SACD player, and a solid state amp, it comes out better than it did before. The reason that mention this is for Chiro, who might benefit from the device. At this price, it may be worth a try.

I think that first, you should define distortion at least as it applies to sound reproduction. This is by no means official, yet, I see distortion as any deviance from a pure (undistorted?) signal. That would involve many possibilities, possibly a bass or treble control moved 'away' from the intended reproduction, rather than helping to correct an anomaly causing a variance in the signal in the first place. Being true to the original signal may not be as we want to hear, and THAT is where is it is up to us to follow our taste rather than a graph, or someone else's taste. Having said that, you have to start somewhere, and that may well mean that a flat frequency response for example is first goal, then altering it to our taste/hearing/preference.

No doubt, but they were also many pounds heavier (at 175 lbs. each!) than a few other models as well.I moved too often to justify it all. Interestingly, they never got the bass that you might expect that they should. Even Mac amps didn't bring out the bass that I wanted. Anyway, I was very lucky to own them living in WY. A guy had bought them a few years before, and had them totally hooked up incorrectly. I bought his entire SAE/JBL system and found that the electronic crossover was really messed up. A lucky break for me.

Sometimes I miss my JBL 4343 speakers. Fact is, I haven't owned a house big enough for them in years.

Curses DCL! Now he knows too much.....we have to make a decision and move quickly. Don't forget to bring the fozgometer.

Always good to welcome a member with some Carver background. I too, was flabbergasted by many Carver products back in the day. He kept breaking to the rules, and I loved it. I especially loved that day that he said that he could make his amp sound like any one of those other botique amps. Made me smile.

I'm no expert, but a fan anyway. Kashmir SP? sorry....The better the system/recording that you have the better you hear things in the wings of the songs that make feel that you never got it right the first time.

Man, Those were the days my friend, we thought they would never end. Ahem, but seriously folks, there was a mystery about it all, at least when I was a young un. And when the package arrived, so had I.

I joined a coffee of the month club...wonder if cat houses have a similar offer.

C'mon you guys, this thread is just an attempt to seduce me back into vinyl. I grit my teeth knowing what I am missing.

I remember a friend of mine telling me that someday we would have all this stuff direct wired into our ears. Now, I'm thinking of just waiting for that instead of buying new gear just yet.

At the risk of embarassing myself.

After 40+ years in audio, I have had the same feeling from time to time. As stated before, it is a journey, and there is nothing wrong about learning. A good friend of mine in Florida is usually finding all kinds of old used equipment at great prices. Most importantly, he enjoys what he finds. -
The thought that comes to mind here is how much my taste has changed from when I was much younger to what I would prefer now. Bass, deep bass was the important part in music many years ago. Now I am more taken by a set of drivers that can produce a soundstage where instruments and singers have a space of their own.

latest acquisition, M&K Satellite 1B and two matching V-1B volkswoofers

Back in time, a buddy of mine got some of these. His old Sony speakers were absolute crap, and I talked him into buying these. He became quite dedicated to HT and these served him well. I have had a high opinion ever since.
