  1. Throttle Elevator Music, Emergency Exit was released on June 26, 2020. "The tracks on Emergency Exit are typically short for this collective; most TEM compositions are under five-minutes. The overlooked pieces that make up the album represent the best overall collection from the group. "Sublime in the Base," a play on the title "Bass in the Sublime" from TEM's debut, is a distinctive combination of groove and majestic horns. Similarly, "Third Reflection" drops some reggae flavor into the dream-like atmosphere created by Washington's long, languorous tenor lines. More mixing of styles emerges on "Jagged Reform," where the interplay between Hughes' pounding rock rhythm and driving hard bop creates something different. "Another Moth Drawn To City Light" is an exquisite piece that features Washington and Erik Jekabson on flugelhorn, and Mike Blankenship on Farfisa organ. It contrasts nicely with the lashing rock number "Rattle Thicket." You can read the rest of the review here...

  5. Once Mofi sells their run, the price for an unopened copy usually doubles in just a few months. Santana, Abrxas was the first, originally 99.95 + shipping. The least expensive one I've seen listed on ebay recently was $1200. Bill Evans, Sunday at the Village Vanguard was #2. A year ago,, you could get a copy for $300, and it's being listed from $700 to $1K now. Starting at #3, Donald Fagan The Nightfly, price was increased to $125. Prices have stayed there but production runs have increased , 7K I think. Abraxas was limited to 3K and others were 5K. A listing for all 10 mofi UD1S releases just sold on ebay. It was listed with a starting bid of $3500, and a make offer option. They turned down my $2500 offer. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mobile-Fidelity-One-Step/154037500661
  6. I have all the Mofi Ultradisc releases except the first one, Santana Abraxas. The only one of the bunch that I say meh to is Simon & Garfunkel, Bridge Over Trouble Water. To me, every one of them is worth the money, but I just can't bring myself to pulling the trigger on Abraxas at the $1500 it's being listed for on ebay now. The second, Bill Evans Sunday at the Village Vanguard, is approaching $1000. All of the UD1S Mofi albums are 45rpm, 180gr double albums. My favorites so far are Donald Fagen, The Nightfly; SRV, Texas Flood; Marvin Gaye, What's Goin' On; and Yes, Fragile. These are by far the highest quality records that I've owned or heard. The proprietary vinyl is just one piece of the process. Manufacturing is another, and it's described in detail here. A UD1S Blood Sweat & Tears album is also available for preorder.
  7. Bobby Watson, Keepin' It Real was released on June 26, 2020. "As saxophonist/composer Bobby Watson embarks on a new chapter in his storied career, his latest album arrives as a reminder of the authenticity that has characterized his music on every step of that journey. Keepin’ It Real, due out June 26 via Smoke Sessions Records, debuts a new incarnation of his renowned band Horizon, furthering a legacy endowed by Watson’s days as one of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and passed on through a lifetime in jazz education." 10. You scooped me. I had that one in the queue.
  11. Hey, anyone have a flashlight. I saw something move over there. Welcome back Mark. It's good to read you again, and as far as I'm concerned, you're always welcome.
  12. Bluey, Tinted Sky was released on June 12, 2020. Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick is the founder, producer, and lead songwriter of Incognito. "British soul collective Incognito was at the forefront of the acid-jazz movement during the 1980s and early ‘90s. Originally focused on instrumental grooves fusing soul, jazz, and disco, the offshoot of Light of the World found long-deserved commercial success throughout the ‘90s with vocally charged numbers featuring the likes of Jocelyn Brown, Maysa, and Carleen Anderson—to name a few."
  13. Ruben Rubio, inexorable was released on June 15, 2020. "′ Chrono ′′ is the first single from Inexorable, the second album by bassist Ruben Rubio, where the frantic rhythm of our lives is revealed. Time is inexorable and, we can't get it back once it's gone, but no one seems to realize how important it is until it's over. Don't waste a single second and enjoy every moment." The review was taken from Ruben Rubio's facebook page.

  15. This is one of my favorites series. I know of six books; Prelude to Foundation, Foundation, Foundation And Empire, Second Foundation, Foundation's Edge, and Foundation And Earth. Long live Hari Seldon.
  16. The Pretenders, Hate For Sale was released on July 17, 2020. "Chrissie Hynde brings back some old bandmates for a brisk record that acknowledges The Pretenders are best when they’re direct and unadorned." You can read the rest of the review here... For me, this is the best Pretenders album in a long time. Ms. Hynde is singing with passion again, and the album isn't over produced. I like it!
  17. FourTet, Sixteen Oceans was released on March 13, 2020. "Four Tet's 10th album, Sixteen Oceans, begins on the dancefloor, travels to the woods, and ends becalmed, invoking, and bestowing peace and tranquility. It is hard to believe that Kieran Hebden has been making music as Four Tet for over 20 years and that Sixteen Oceans is his tenth album under that name, not to mention his countless mixes, remixes, mix albums, collaborations, and solo releases during that time." You can read the rest of the review here...
  18. Too Slim & The Taildraggers, The Remedy was released on July 17, 2020. "With 10 originals and one cover by Elmore James, The Remedy is a dynamic blues-infused rock and roots album, that once again proves the songwriting mettle of this hard-driving trio. Visual storytelling abounds, brought to life by multiple award-winner Tim Langford (Too Slim) on guitar and vocals, Zach Kasik on bass and vocals, and Jeff “Shakey” Fowlkes on drums. This time out, there are guest appearances from harmonica players Jason Ricci, Richard “Rosy” Rosenblatt and Sheldon Ziro. And what wonderful additions to the mix they are. Recorded in Nashville at Zach Kasik’s Wild Feather Recording studio, The Remedy is produced by the band." You can read the rest of the review here...

  20. We do have a sticker for that.
  21. Glenn Zaleski, The Question was released on July 17, 2020. "Zaleski has just released a beautiful new album called The Question, this time in a quintet format. The title refers to the questions and uncertainties of a young man who turned 30 in the summer of 2019, on the verge of new fatherhood and responsibilities. Walks with his wife in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and visits to The Vale of Cashmere last summer found Zaleski meditating on this transitional moment in his life and conceiving material for a quintet." 23. Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Just Coolin' was recorded in 1959, and released on July 17, 2020. "On July 17, Blue Note Records will release Just Coolin’, a never-before-released studio album by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers that was recorded on March 8, 1959 in Rudy Van Gelder’s living room studio in Hackensack, New Jersey. The session featured a short-lived line-up of The Jazz Messengers with drummer Art Blakey, trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt. The album features two previously unissued compositions including Timmons’ tune “Quick Trick,” which is available today to stream or download. Just Coolin’ can be pre-ordered now in several formats: CD, digital download, and an all-analog 180g vinyl pressing that was mastered by Kevin Gray." You can read the rest of the review here...
  24. Lunar Clock, The Scream Of Nature was released on April 12, 2020. "Dutch progressive project Lunar Clock releases a conceptual album inspired by the paintings of Edvard Munch." I couldn't find a review on the web, so here goes. Each track reminds me of another band. The first track reminds me of Bohemian Rhapsody, because of the harmonies, but it is very different. The second track brings Pink Floyd to mind. The guitar part is very David Gilmour like. The third track reminds me of Emerson Lake & Palmer because of the keyboards... then Jethro Tull... and so it goes with the entire album. I enjoyed this album, but it most likely won't get played much. If I want to hear Queen, I'll play Queen. The same goes for Pink Floyd, ELP, and Jethro Tull. If you like progressive rock, you'll most likely enjoy this album too. This album gets a 6.5 on the Sk1Bum 10 point scale.
  25. Patricia Barber, Higher was released on March 15, 2019. "For four decades, Chicago pianist Patricia Barber has been quietly, but steadily, creating her own unique brand of music. Higher, the bandleader’s first new recording in six years, merges jazz harmonies and rhythms with classical art song and erudite poetry, and features “Angels, Birds And I ...”—an ambitious song cycle—alongside a few jazz standards."
