I`ll chime in with my .02 with the Dayton Planers. I have 16 of them in my small line array. They are a decent tweeter, I dont know if the chance of beaming increases or decreases in a line array, but I have heard no beaming from these. The highs seemed a bit veiled. not quite as clear as I would like, They dont image quite as well as others, but fine enough. For their price of about $75 they are a nice planer in my opinion. A better choice....for the arrays anyway...is the Fountek NeoCd2.0M, but at twice the price of the daytons its a $ consideration. These really shine, the airiness is very cool and the depth they throw is amazing. I have my big arrays hooked up to my MP401 for the last couple of days. These have 16 of the Founteks and I am just floored by how good they sound. I have found with any ribbon or planer that room treatments are a big plus. Before I treated my room I found both the arrays a bit fatiguing, now its almost nirvana.

Nice grab Rod.... I have a old pair of Scott speakers lying around the house......196 (?) I think... They also have 15" woofers....been wondering what I could build with those woofers.....maybe a ripole... Have fun with the new toys.....I'd try a little ACDC to start......

I dont know......I know what a dobro is....but I dont think it would make that chirping sound.....they are more like a tin sounding slide guitar. There are a few points in the song that you obviously hear a guitar scratch......this is more like a chirp or a squeaky bike wheel been spun. I know this isnt an big deal......just a bit of fun with music.

Today I had some time in the afternoon to actually sit down and listen to my rig. I decided to listen to some old tunes I havnt heard in a long while......one of them was Fleetwood Mac.....Rumours. I had forgotten just how well this album was produced and was enjoying it a lot.....when I heard something I had never heard before. It was on track 9..."I dont want to know". I was listening for the different instruments being played......I still swear there is mandolin being played.....but I know similar sounds can be made with a capo up high....anyway, at the beginning of the song there is an audible slide on the guitar...but then I noticed a chirping sound....like a bird right after it. I listened again....and can hear it twice. It happens at the beginning of the song(right after the first chord)and again before the vocals begin. It comes from the left side.....I think its a guitar slide.....but.....I dont know. I have been playing guitar and mandolin for many years but have never heard a "chirp" like this. What do you guys think....I know you have it....give it a listen....let me know what you figure it is.....

Planar Speaker Owner's Satisfaction Poll, ends 4/5/11

That made me laugh -
I believe the audio industry is failing because of portable crap systems..... I understand the reason portable audio players like ipods are so popular....what I dont understand is why with a lot of the young people that is their only source, besides car radios, of music. I work and live out of town in a house supplied by the company with 4 other guys...they are 21, 28,29 and 48 yrs old....I'm 50. The house is furnished.....the first day I brought up a cd player a reciever and some JBLs.....I could listen to music and have a HT system right in the living room. The young guys thought I was crazy....all that gear. I thought they would enjoy it....nope. They could care less....they walk around all day with those crappy ear plugs from their mp3 players.... Not one of them own any kind of audio equipment......it seems odd to me because when I was in my 20s everybody I knew had some sort of gear to play music. So if this is the best the young people these days can come up with then.....wow.....wonder what the industry is going to look like in 20 yrs.

Thanks Gary.......I did enjoy that...

A little PDR history for you.......sorry to bore you. Like a lot of you here I grew up in the seventies, that was a different time for music, there didnt seem to be all the lines drawn in the sand back then, at least not where I grew up in northern Canada. It was ok to listen to a lot of different types of music.....I remember listening to Waylon Jennings. the Tubes and Pink Floyd all on the same ride home from work. The exceptions were disco and country.....those were a no no. The biggest shock probably came from watching Elvis Costello in 1977......he was backed by a band called the Bare naked Ladies....not the band your thinking of.....punk was surreal back then for me. I was involved with a band ...a garage rock band that had a bit of success with a competition that was held on the local rock radio station. They took submissions from local bands, picked the ten best, and they cut an album. We were lucky......ours was the most popular and we received quite a bit of air play.....another song was recorded.....and that also recieved airplay. That was the best 6 months of my youth. So what was my role in the band?.....not what you would of expected.....I was the song writer. I play many instruments.....unfortunatly they are more suited to classical than to a rock band. But I started writing lyrics and playing guitar when I was about 13 yrs old.....it has always been a passion of mine....and though for many yrs now I havnt put a song to paper, I always considered myself a better song writer than a musician. So heres the weird thing...I also dont pay much attention to lyrics in music.....I never did. It was always the music itself that caught my attention.....there are a few exceptions. This one will date me......Neil Youngs "Old Man"......I always thought this was one of the most beautifully written songs...the guitar playing is so uncomplicated......yet fit the words so well....I always thought this song to be a masterpiece. I was lucky as my first wife bought me tickets to see Neil and Crazyhorse perform.....one week after my 24th birthday......I remember the crowd rocking back and forth to that tune.....amazing.... So for what its worth.....this is one of my favs in the lyrics dept.

So, I'm sitting in my hotel room listening to music on the TV......yep, what a life..... when they start playing Christmass music. A bunch of stuff I've heard a million times come on.....some I really like.....some not so much, when "God rest ye merry gentlemen" comes on....this time a version I have never heard before. I am not really a Annie Lennox fan......but she really nailed this song. I'm thinking .....maybe theres more traditional X-mass songs by artists I havnt heard.....that I should. You guys have favs....or something new we should be checking out? Please post.....maybe theres some gems that we could check out....... Thanxs.....

I have been looking for a set of bookshelf speakers to use for back surrounds in my HT. Since my front arrays use ribbons, I thought if I could find something with ribbons in them they would probably match better. Guess I'm lucky because 2 days into my search I found these. They were made by a guy named Jason(cant recall his last name) from Lucidity Audio in Arizona. The guy that commissioned them in Edmonton Liked them so much that he ordered floorstanders from the same guy. I had an opportunity to listen to them and they were quite nice. I brought these little beauties home and they sound REALLY nice.....they seem to integrate with my arrays nicely. I had to go downtown to pick them up, so I made a trip of it and went to one of the high end audio outlets (Audio Ark) to look at turntables and listen to some $$$ gear. When I was there I had the chance to listen to some Sonus Faber speaks. These ones,Stradivari Homage :http://www.sonusfaber.com/eng/home.html They were linked to a huge amp by Audio Research, didnt see the model #, and the source was a Mark Levinson CDP As I sat in the "Room" and listened for about 10 mins, I was trying to see how my New OBs stacked up.... It didnt take long for me to realize that these didnt compare at all, my system sounds a lot better. It surprised me, I wasnt expecting it. I was shocked when I asked the retail on the Fabers and they told me $25,000. This made me feel really great on a Saturday afternoon......and it seems all my hard work at DIY has paid off. Perry

Marc.......kind of like sound masking at grocery stores. Where they play musack to hide the monotone hum of the freezers. Its not untill they turn the musack off that you notice just how loud the freezers are......you would think no way I should hear that but once the tunes come on the hum dissapears.......a lot of different low multi tones overiding loud monotones......you focus more on the many... :-k Perry
