  1. Personally I would rather have a belt than a long (ohc) chain. They age according to heating and cooling cycles and weathering, as rubber based items do, not necessarily according to mileage, but are much less expensive to replace. As for followers, once again they are easy to inspect in an ohc engine. So if it’s a follower-roller issue, lack of enough lube/contact surface to cam issue, it’s easy and cheap to identify visually. Even if it’s a durability issue with the roller/bearing itself, it’s a relatively inexpensive part to replace and easy to identify the impending failure. Not to state the obvious, but you simply being aware of the strengths and weaknesses of your particular engine will get you tens of thousands of more miles out of it. And I also immensely enjoy wringing my tweaked machine out in that sweeper or long straight away......... Matters not if it’s asphalt, dirt, snow or water.
  2. Generally Rich, Audi and it’s parent company makes a pretty strong bottom end,( crank etc.) The torque convertor auto transmissions are weak, but the dcts are pretty strong. If if you are tuning, you are changing spark timing and fuel delivery ( and valve timing if you have a vvt engine) Considering this, the most important advice I can give is, -as the engine makes more power, make sure you are able to feed it more air (‘cold air’ intake), make sure you are able to get rid of more air (decent exhaust mods) and as stated previously -because most of these are bolt-ons, make sure your stock cooling system and lubricating system are monitored closely. Seeing some of your previous posts I do believe you have done most of these bolt on mods..... If you are not racing (ie putting more than a 50% ‘duty cycle’ to those mods), allowing the cooling system to ‘catch up’ after a nice full power pull, you will not have any issues, as the human factor of overengineering is already built in to the driveline. I put short periods of 15 psi boost to a cast bottom end in my Dodge Omni GLH-T built for 9, no extra fuel so I know it’s running lean as hell, listen to the pistons rattling with preignition, at 110,000 miles. Pretty much beat it like a baby seal, and it has lasted for 15,000 miles like that. But I do let it cool, talk to it nicely, pray about it once in a while....... ?
  3. Depends explicitly on how the motor is tuned, how it is cooled, and how it is lubricated. If that engine runs rich enough, cool enough, and uses enough and proper lubrication, a long time. Also, using the grey matter between your ears when extreme circumstances are present increases longevity exponentially. If you beat the engine with lots of boost ignoring temperatures and preignition, make sure you have your tech on speed dial.
  4. The Grand Rapids Metro Cruise was this weekend. Traditionally the week after the Woodward Dream Cruise so as not to compete. A little backstory. My father and uncle purchased a Dodge/Dodge Truck/ eventually added Midas Motorhome franchise in ‘68. It was NE Grand Rapids. Most of you know Chrysler built the Wing Cars in ‘69 and ‘70 to dominate NASCAR and for homologation purposes had to build at least 500 cars. 504 ‘69 Charger Daytona’s were built, of which the Hemi 4 speed was produced specifically for NASCAR teams to thrash. Most were destroyed racing them, a few gutted race cars were restored and survive. I believe Pettys ‘70 Bird recently was a no sell at auction at $3.5 million. The second most desirable, after the 4 speed of course, would be the ‘69 Charger Daytona, Hemi automatic. My father and his brother sold one of these, from Northfield Dodge, in April of ‘70. Nobody wanted the car. I know the person who owns it, he’s currently the second owner. 50 years later, here it is, in the parking lot of my extended family’s dealership. The owner has the original window sticker (monroney) the original bill of sale, the original Northfield Dodge sticker on the trunk lid, the build sheet, and the complete service history. Thia car is truly a unicorn. Im trying to get a photo op with my father and the car together, as he is probably the only dealer left alive in the country that sold one new.

  10. I remember working at my family’s Dodge dealership washing cars as a young teen with new Daytonas, Caravans, Shelby Chargers..... Praying that the talks about Chrysler buying Lamborghini would come true. And then making absurd promises to my God if Chrysler would build the Viper. While Tom Gale and Maximum Bob Lutz ultimately made the Viper happen, it never would have come close without Iacocca. RIP Lido Anthony Iaccoca And thank you.

This does beg the question, what streams /stores the best resolution digital and what can be some restrictions (including even network / home WiFi routers etc.) I will also add this to my followed threads.   12. So my first ‘mediation conference ‘ is in two days. While there are no guns involved ....my wife lied to an Ottawa County (MI) circuit court judge and obtained a restraining order ‘ex parte’ thereby keeping me from every bit of my personal property (we were married when I was almost 40) so not only is my entire audio rig (personal property) at our marital home, so is every motorcycle, Sea Doo, road bike, trailers, etc etc etc that I owned way before we were married. She has total control of all of it. Even though in Michigan it’s still mine. So far I’ve been able to get my clothes. In four months. The courts in Ottawa MI really don’t listen to facts. They just blindly believe everything she wrote down. She has lied and manipulated them for years. Sorry for the hijack, Mark, but this ones a bit personal.

  21. Indeed. Current Top Fuel ‘Hemi’ blocks share cylinder ‘bore center-to-center’ measurement, and ‘deck height’ (bottom of block to top of deck-minus head-) with the Gen II Chrysler block. Valvetrain actuation is almost identical. Although proprietary machining, those two primary block measurements give tribute to how good the original design was.
  22. Crap, Rich. I got rid of a v-rated Goodyear on my Shelby Charger for a BFG Comp TA ZR. It’s now been sitting in my garage stationary for about 6-7 years. Ya think you had flat spots? I was praying it wouldn’t be the case. We’ll see this spring. If this frickin snow ever stops.

The rest of that post had ‘ If a blown Vette crossed the starting line at 200 mph at the same time a TF car hit the throttle, The fueler would easily pass it by the 1/4 mile mark (top end finish line). Today’s TF machines are estimated to be producing 11,000 horsepower. Estimated because no dyno on earth could handle it. Don Schumacher racing machines their own block from a 780 lb block of billett aluminum. Down to 140 lb engine block. Those pictures you see launching all blurry? Ive been to many NHRA races. During a full Top Fuel launch the overpressure in the air causes the liquid in your eyeballs to vibrate so violently that is hard to focus on the car until it is well past you. I remember watching the Chi Town Hustler back in the late ‘80s. With an iron block Hemi that car produced almost 3000 horspower and ran 265 in the quarter.

Some real cool facts about top fuel dragsters I stumbled across..... --------- * One dragster's 500-inch Hemi makes more horsepower then the first 8 rows at Daytona. * Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1 1/2 gallons of nitro per second, the same rate of fuel consumption as a fully loaded 747 but with 4 times the energy volume. * The supercharger takes more power to drive than a stock hemi makes. * Even with nearly 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into nearly-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock. * Dual magnetos apply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder. * At stoichiometric (exact) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture (for nitro), the flame front of nitromethane measures 7050 degrees F. * Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases. * Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2 way, the engine is dieseling from compression-plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting off its fuel flow. * If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in those cylinders and then explodes with a force that can blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or blow the block in half. * Dragsters twist the crank (torsionally) so far (20 degrees in the big end of the track) that sometimes cam lobes are ground offset from front to rear to re-phase the valve timing somewhere closer to synchronization with the pistons. * To exceed 300mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must accelerate at an average of over 4G's. But in reaching 200 mph well before 1/2 track, launch acceleration is closer to 8G's. * If all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs $1000.00 per second. * Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have read this sentence. Did you know … … that the nitromethane-powered engines of NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars produce approximately 7,000 horsepower, about 37 times that of the average street car? … that one cylinder of the eight cylinders of a Top Fuel dragster or a Funny Car produces 750 horsepower, equaling the entire horsepower output of a NASCAR engine? … that the gasoline-powered engines of NHRA Pro Stock cars produce about 1,200 horsepower, about eight times that of the average street car? … that an NHRA Top Fuel dragster accelerates from 0 to 100 mph in less than .8-second, almost 11 seconds quicker than it takes a production Porsche 911 Turbo to reach the same speed? … that an NHRA Top Fuel dragster leaves the starting line with a force nearly five times that of gravity, the same force of the space shuttle when it leaves the launching pad at Cape Canaveral? … that an NHRA Funny Car is slowed by a reverse force more than seven times that of gravity when both parachutes deploy simultaneously? … that NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars consume between four and five gallons of fuel during a quarter-mile run, which is equivalent to between 16 and 20 gallons per mile? … that NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars use between 10 and 12 gallons of fuel for a complete pass, including the burnout, backup to the starting line, and quarter-mile run? … that NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars travel the length of more than four football fields in less than five seconds? … that NHRA Top Fuel dragsters can exceed 280 mph in just 660 feet? … that from a standing start, NHRA Top Fuel dragsters accelerate faster than a jumbo jet, a fighter jet, and a Formula One race car? … that a fuel pump for an NHRA Top Fuel dragster and Funny Car delivers 65 gallons of fuel per minute, equivalent to eight bathroom showers running at the same time? … that the fuel-line pressure for NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars is between 400 and 500 pounds, about 20 times greater than the pressure on passenger-car fuel pumps? … that depending on size and angle, the large rear wing on an NHRA Top Fuel dragster develops between 4,000 and 8,000 pounds of downforce? … that the 17-inch rear tires used on NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars wear out after four to six runs, or about two miles?
