Hoo-boy!

It hasn't been explained that m4a is not an audio file format. It is a container that can contain either a lossy or lossless file. The conversion to mp3 from an m4a file very well might reduce your file to a lossy format. Will you hear it? I dunno. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4_Part_14 But since MPEG-4 Part 14 is a container format, MPEG-4 files may contain any number of audio, video, and even subtitle streams, making it impossible to determine the type of streams in an MPEG-4 file based on its filename extension alone. In response, Apple Inc. started using and popularizing the .m4a filename extension, which is used for MP4 containers with audio data in the lossy Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) or its own Apple Lossless (ALAC) formats.

Ribbon buzzing from change in humidity.. Can we fix it?
weitrhino replied to Ar9Jim's topic in Loudspeaker repair
In my mind I think the term "swelling" is misapplied. Yes, strictly speaking when humidity rises materials such as wood and MDF will absorb moisture and shed it when relative humidity drops. But we must remember that wood is imperfectly constructed so there's no reason for 'swelling' to be uniform. In all likelihood what we have is simple warpage which should be enough to unevenly alter the tension on the ribbon substrate especially considering the ribbon function is so closely related to how it its tensioned within the frame. -
Reference Disc/Memorial for Passed Artists (2016)
weitrhino replied to Maddmaster's topic in media DIY
Is anybody going to vote for a track or artist they've never heard? Aside from my own submissions I have 9 of these tracks already, another nine I wouldn't care to ever hear again including every Eagles track. There was a time these songs were practically inescapable. A reference disc has two purposes for me; To present something sonically unique, to introduce new or otherwise overlooked gem recordings. It is not a place to rehash old standards in my view. Curmudgeon mode off. -
Stopping in to say hello!
weitrhino replied to Chops's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
Ok, this guy's a nutball like the rest of us. He'll fit in just fine. Welcome, Chops. -
That's how I listed them: song, artist, album. Both are suggested for the reference disc only and I can supply lossless files to whomever is compiling the tracks.
-
Yes. Two separate projects; One commemorative, the other sonic. Creates less work and expense when someone only wants one or the other disc. I didn't submit anything for the sonic side because the project seems to be running counter to what I'd want. For the reference disc: Water Under The Bridge, Pshychodots, Psychodots Jaco, Jonas Hellborg, Bass

Infinity 9 Kappa Placement and Zero Soundstage Problem
weitrhino replied to Greg Viggiano's topic in Loudspeakers
I need some real help with this as it seems antithetical to any notion I have on creating a clean acoustic environment. -
If I may speak candidly, I don't really have an interest in a commemorative disc. The body of work left behind suffices for me in that regard but of course I'll support whatever is eventually decided. However a new reference disc is an exciting notion and I'd be happy to contribute. I'm far more interested in the tracks others find to be of particular quality than simply being from a musician who's passed. How can I help the effort?
-
I've been sitting on a couple tracks just waiting for the next reference disc project, but they won't meet the criteria being discussed.
-
Of course, if you can find one.

Give this guy full membership for that. Full stop. He's OK.

Carver Research Lightstar Reference direct preamp
weitrhino replied to theboy's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
The Lightstar preamps are just as rare and without the remote they are complete bricks. There are no manual controls and no repair parts available. I understand if you 'just gotta have the set,' but functionally there are better options out there. -
I would be totally into submitting some new tracks for volume II of the CaverSite Reference Disc. If we all ganged up on DaddJT maybe we can make it happen?

I bought that one new in '79 after hearing used as a demo for Advent in a stereo store....back when we used to have stereo stores. This recommendation is a bit of a plug, but I don't care because this one's a stunner. I plug for the people I represent because they do something special, something remarkable, and have a talent level far far beyond the ordinary. Otherwise why bother, right? Mike Keneally and Beer for Dolphins Sluggo! Deluxe Edition remaster You don't have to take my word for it because reviews of this remastered edition stuffed with extras and an incredible sounding mix score supreme praise from all who cared to write about it. Considering this album was out of print for a decade Mike's decision to remaster it the way he saw fit gave him a chance to wipe the slate clean on an album with which he was never quite satisfied based on the sonics. As for the sonics now? Damn!
