Hi everyone, I have a Carver M 1.5t for many years & which makes the KEF 104/2 sound divine from the Thorens TD150 turntable or the Marantz CD91 gold edition. The M 1.5t I'll have to ask some of you experts why the transformer started humming, but not now in this topic 🙂 in the meantime, a big hello to everyone and thanks from Italy. Jeff(:

Welcome Jeff. I had that issue as well. Go to the Media option. It works different (at least for me) than it used to.

December 12 2023. UPDATE: After the closing of the company that owned license to Bob Carver's designs and products from 2019 to 2021, I asked Bob if he was willing to take one more swing at audio together, to combine our strengths and repair the damage to his legacy from the previous attempt. In Feb 2022 Bob Carver LLC was founded as the IP holder and BC Audio was founded as the manufacturer. A start-up while facing headwinds from a typhoon of negative feedback related to the Crimson 275 has been tough to say the least. Seeing the legacy of a brilliant man who has given his life to improving our listening experience, tarnished by the previous attempt was gut wrenching for me personally. I know Bob Carver the man vs the unfair insinuations and allegations being made about his intent and design of the Crimson 275. Bob is all about customer satisfaction as the main reason for doing this work. Bob offered refunds for 30 days at that time in 2022 and then extended it to 90 days. Bob also offered to change the chassis ground at no charge for those who wanted the change. We still offer that change at no charge if the customer sends it in. Bob profited nothing from the previous attempt but stood behind his name like the good man that he is. What I've learned about the Crimson 275's produced from 2019 to 2021, after having many come in for the updates: The grounding on the Crimson 275 is actually quiet safe. Similar to the audio components you own from the 1980s without safety grounded plugs (sometimes not even polarized) and metal chassis, or the millions of tube amplifiers made before the 3 prong plug was even invented. A full short potential was 6 volts at only mA of current Not even a tingle. Very few Crimson 275s had a polarity issue. Maybe one builder on one day. The vast majority had no issue, judging from the build dates on either side of the poor review specimen that have came in for ground changes. The transformers used are the exact parts Bob specified for the 275. The 15w Edcor are a Carver design from over a decade earlier. The 275 is a type of performance to weight ratio experiment. Building a great sounding 75w @ 1K tube amp weighing less than 20lbs for less than $3K, being serviced and Made in the USA was the target. The previous license owner did not change the Bob Carver designated parts. The Black Magic 275 uses the same parts with a few manufacturing updates.. Specs gone wrong As a dealer, I had no doubt about the power output of the Crimson 275 from experience. Customers had positive feedback comparing to others of 3 times the 275s power rating. If you notice, tube amplifier power ratings by most any company, you will generally find the power rating stated at 1Khz as standard practice, in comparison to solid state specs that generally state a 20Hz to 20Khz bandwidth quantifier in the spec.. The reasoning for this is the older tube amp designs being soft on bass. Still today, many tube amps tend to roll off in low frequencies, so they state power at 1Khz.. The Crimson 275 power spec should have been stated as 75w @ 1Khz like a tube amp, not 20Hz to 20Khz like a solid state. I suspect this was a salesman spec error but I was not involved and can't say for sure. The RAM 285 is one of few tube amps that can make it's full power to below 20Hz, so the power rating on the RAM 285 is not an error, but instead of 19lbs it weighs 56lbs. Bye for now.

Every Reference Amplifier Model (RAM) 285 get tested before shipping. They are basic QC test to assure proper operation. Each amp gets a check on both channels with a signal generator and scope. Next they go to burn-in, running music for 24-48 hrs. After burn-in they go to inspection for: 1) Frequency response test at 5 watts within +- .3db 2) Frequency response test at full rated power within +- .5db 3) Channel level balance within .2 db. 4) Power test both channels driven at 1K to a .5%THD+N limit. (consistently over 105w). 5) SNR. Exceeds the 101db limit of the test device. 100 min. A serialized copy of the results are included with the unit for the customer and we keep a copy on file for reference.

Yes they do. Yes they can. While spending 6 weeks at Bob's home and at his lab in Snohomish this year, voicing was a design detail that had to be right for the new products. Much of the voicing is in the design itself. Bob likes the sound of a "bouncy" "springy", higher voltage, more loosely regulated power supply, over the more common theory to design for highly regulated and 'stiff' power supplies. "After decades of testing, I've found this way to sound best." Bob Carver. I asked the question, how do you get a supply to act springy and bouncy? "The smaller power transformer will have voltage sag under load, but I start with higher voltage by about 200v, 685v in the 275 and closer to 300v higher in the 285, so it can sag and bounce without the voltage going too low driving loudspeakers. This allows lighter weigh, has lower cost to produce and sounds best to me over decades of study." This design philosophy has a big effect on the Carver sound and goes against what many have been taught in school, so many that are not physicist cry out as if the design is flawed or "cheap". Physicist get a thrill out of designing lighter, lower cost, better performing products leveraging the laws of physics. It's in their DNA.. Similar with the tiny subwoofers. You can shrink the box, if you can supply enough power to make the equation work out. If you do it right like Bob can, it looks "amazing". Some voicing effects can be seen in frequency response graphs. They are subtle within about .25db. Bob recognizes these details in graphs as a way of knowing his design was not "improved" by manufacturing. One of the few times I've seen Bob angry was the mention of improving his power supply design for the 275 thinking about 'stiffening it up'. "Nobody touches my design!" "With good intension they with think they are making it better and F--k it up!"

Thanks Bob. There are many hours of CNC machining in each chassis. Customers have remarked about how nice it looks it their home.. One customers 95 yr old mother said, "Oh my, that is beautiful!" "What is it?"

We have our own solutions and I can custom order rare parts sometimes. In fact, my custom solutions are often better than a stock part. So my point is about the manufactures and their ignorance/ADHD/neglect of the market. A rather large market! Not about whether we have solutions. Of course we have solutions! It's just in some cases, I'd rather not have to make custom solutions...especially when the parts are out there but distributors just don't keep them in stock, which hints to the manufacturers that they aren't in demand.

I've seen vertical Arrays. Two shorter caps with adaptors. Stack em up. Screw mount on the bottom adaptor and run heavy gauge wire on either side to connect the stacked caps in parallel.

Hi everyone, i'm Lorenzo a music enthusisat from northern Italy! I recently acquired a wonderful Carver combo C1 + m500t and can't wait to find more info on them and valuable suggestions. I do like the sound and flexibility of those equipment a lot! I do read some posts in the past but never joined till now!

I read a lot of precious info and mods here... and since at least the preamp need some care, i will maybe do some mods at the same time. I'm going to open a thread asking for some advice too. The carver combo is going to drive soon a pair of Electro-Voice pi15-3, completely restored and veneered (removing the black carpet) by myself. Thank you all, again!
