  1. Welcome to the forum DD !!! Nice equipment you have there. What about the speakers and turntable(s)? Yeah, we're nosy like that around here. After 5 posts you can upload pictures - which we fully expect. 🙂 Pros - Not bending over to flip the switches. Music playback is available instantly. Internal components experience less thermal cycling. Lights in the 500t most often fail on power up so that is avoided. Cons - Electrolytic capacitors have ratings based on hours of operation. Always on = shorter lifespan measured in actual listening hours. Lights in the 500t are rated in hours of use which is obviously reduced if only powered on for playback. If a connected component were to fail or misbehave resulting in a high signal level "noise" to be produced, and you are not home to power down the equipment, your equipment and speakers could be damaged. You should consider sending the C-1 and M500t to Nelion Audio for the C-1 BillD treatment and the M500t MKII upgrade. The electrolytic caps in both units are due for replacement, the BillD upgrade is especially nice for vinyl users and the amp upgrades put the icing on the cake. Greg will make two good pieces of gear spec out into two great pieces of gear - which should last for many more years of listening enjoyment. 2. Welcome to the jungle Scott !! Don't be a stranger - we have enough strange in this place already... ( @RodH, @Balok, @Sk1Bum, @DrummerJuice, etc.)
  3. I'm so old that when I see "quad" I think of this:
  4. Welcome String !! Great amps you have there. Give Greg a call at Nelion Audio. He can discuss your amps and the possibilities for them. He's also very active here - probably because he owns the joint !! 😄 @Nahash5150 is his username, breathing life (and sometimes superpowers) into Carver gear is his game.
  5. Stu Hamm is one of the greatest bass players of all time. I've seen him with Joe Satriani and Jonathan Mover - nothing short of amazing.
  6. Take a peek at this post and see if it helps at all:
  7. Welcome to the asylum !! Congrats on the amp - it's a true powerhouse - be careful !! What kind of sources and speakers are you using in your system ? You know, a picture is worth a thousand words and to really answer us properly you will need at least 2,000 words... That's a LOT of typing... Just saying... 🙂
  8. Welcome !!! Thanks for joining us.
  9. If you are reading this you likely have multiple experiences with the scenario. A person you may know or may be meeting for the first time visits your home. They likely notice at some point that you enjoy music and conversation around the stereo system is likely to begin. You turn the system on at a reasonable volume level and probably answer questions about the various parts and pieces. They tend to ask more regarding the speakers, especially if they don't look like traditional box speakers. (SDA SRS 1.2TL's) At some point you likely explain about power - how music can be incredibly visceral, emotionally charged when played at higher levels - without noise or distortion. Your new audience is all in - they want to experience this for themselves. They ask you to play something to demonstrate what you are talking about. What do you grab and throw into the Oppo ? Explain why - is it the overall score? A song with a "special" drum solo, lead guitar, bass line, piano solo, etc. that really stands out? A song that vividly demonstrates huge presence, wide range and distinct subtleties? A particularly impressive vocal performance? I'll start - and I didn't even select the song this time. A friend brought his new lady friend over, with the express purpose of letting her hear my system. She was a bit on the "stereos are the same" wagon and he wanted me to show her how different one could sound from another. The stereo was already on when they arrived and I was trying to end a work call so they had 15 minutes or so sitting in front of it while I completed my work day. After we talked for a few minutes I asked her what types of music she preferred. Soft rock, classic rock, some jazz, easy listening. OK. She then says “On the way here we caught the end of a song. That “I’ll be right here waiting for you” song. I like that one – can you play it?” For those not familiar, the song she was referring to is “Right Here Waiting” by Richard Marx. It was a reasonably good recording job in 1989. The song starts with an electronic keyboard score, followed by a very distinct medley on the piano. A bass movement is then brought in that is very expansive sounding. Throughout the song there are very striking bass notes, keyboard tones, etc. that jump out at you when played on a quality system. His lyrics are very clear and there is a nice acoustic guitar solo in the middle as well. To be honest I had not really given it much thought before but it is a great demo song. I played it at the same volume as when they came in and she said that it sounded “good”. I asked her to sit in the sweet spot. I asked if she was OK with it played loud? She said sure, I love it loud. I re-queued it, set the volume at 2:00 o’clock and hit play. The look on her face was priceless. She kept looking over her shoulders and she asked afterwards where the side speakers were? We talked for a bit and she asked how could it be so loud but it didn’t hurt her ears and it was perfectly clear? I smiled and said “Thank you Bob Carver and Matthew Polk”. I gave her the tablet and let her play whatever she wanted. I had a good time hearing quite a few songs I hadn't heard in quite some time. I'm going to let other people drive more often. I tend to play what I like and am familiar with - leaving a huge portion of music in my library unheard. Not any longer...
  10. Randog - A Jester award means funny. Not obscene, not confrontational, not in blatant conflict with the rules that all of us live by here. Read a few hundred of RodH's posts for great examples. If you think you will garner "crowd support" with this type of behavior you are seriously mistaken.
  11. This is not, by any means, a cinematic masterpiece. However, it is AMAZING to look at the cast and try to comprehend how Tim Burton managed to get them all together. It's a fun watch and I always end up watching it if I stumble upon it while channel surfing. Jack Nicholson as President James Dale / Art Land Glenn Close as First Lady Marsha Dale Annette Bening as Barbara Land Pierce Brosnan as Professor Donald Kessler Danny DeVito as Rude Gambler Martin Short as Press Secretary Jerry Ross Sarah Jessica Parker as Nathalie Lake Michael J. Fox as Jason Stone Rod Steiger as General Decker Tom Jones as himself Lukas Haas as Richie Norris Natalie Portman as Taffy Dale Jim Brown as Byron Williams Lisa Marie as Martian Girl Sylvia Sidney as Florence Norris Christina Applegate as Sharona Joe Don Baker as Mr. Norris Pam Grier as Louise Williams Paul Winfield as General Casey Jack Black as Billy-Glenn Norris Brian Haley as Mitch O-Lan Jones as Sue-Ann Norris Jerzy Skolimowski as Dr. Zeigler Ray J as Cedric Williams Brandon Hammond as Neville Williams Frank Welker as the voice of the Martians
  12. That's for sure. The advent of 24/7 social media seems to have lobotomized people - few of them can form an opinion or thought independently and, even more scary to me, nobody is held accountable for propagating blatant lies, half-truths, etc. Most of the media falls into the same bucket. Pick a lie and run with it !!! I have talked to dozens of young people and I have drawn the conclusion that the America I know and love is at the end of her life cycle. I am unsure how the models I hear proposed are supposed to work financially but it is a certainty that this place is going to have a much larger government intruding into everyone's lives and wallets in the future. As the boomer generation dies off the resistance to this continual assault on the basics of the country will fade. I'm astonished when I hear people talking about "forgiving" loans and such - don't people realize that doing that is called stealing in most rational parts of the world ? Yet another example of no accountability. You know things are crazy when young people in our own country want to burn our flag yet the world is watching young people in Hong Kong carrying it as a symbol of freedom - with potentially deadly consequences.
  13. If I feel like hard rockin' then for me this album falls into that category:
  14. It is awesome to see another new face here. Welcome to the nut house. ? The BillD modded C-1 has several things changed to help it sound just that much better than stock - much improved op-amps, metal film resistors in the signal path, better quality caps in the audio path, MLCC caps, the phono input capacitance is changed to better match today's cartridges, the headphone circuit is modified a bit, etc. Bill took a logical, deliberate look at the unit as a piece of electronic gear and said "What do I have access to today that can make a measurable, listenable (if that's a word?) improvement over an already well designed pre-amp? His results speak for themselves. Probably the biggest improvement most folks report isn't audible in a sense - it is how quiet the unit is with no signal. Hiss, hum, etc. is astonishingly low or non-existent. A few others here have added other physical design improvements & other electrical modifications (improved RCA jacks, better feet, better cover screws, balanced outputs, improved power supply, remote volume control, etc.) and just made it that much better & user friendly. The results have been measured and reported here on the site and there is tons of documentation on how to do many of these mods yourself available here as well. Please don't be shy - ask questions. No haters here - we won't allow it. This is truly one of the best places you could choose to hang your hat in cyberspace and we are happy you are here. Now post some pictures of your gear so we can all feel a little better about our own WAF compromises. ? ? ?
  15. You can't spell crap without spelling rap !!
  16. Seeing that album, sitting next to a Motley Crue divider, just speaks to me in some disturbing way...
  17. Another one that doesn't seem to have quite the catalog of knowledge is SoundHound. I use it and Shazam. I find SoundHound to be better for me for how I use it - I capture music unknown to me and then, when I am shopping at McKay's I pull up the history and start looking. I know Shazam has the history as well but it has "stranded" me a few times at McKay's, leaving me unable to retrieve my history shopping list. If you guys get down to TN & NC be sure to take a shopping list and plenty of $$. They have new and used CDs, LPs, DVDs, SACD, etc. Most are used and priced from $.25 for "very scratched" to regular price for an in-demand, new or unusual release. FWIW - I have bought tons of the very scratched items and never had one not play. Most music is divided by genre and artist - except for the very scratched section. Those are just added to the shelves as they come in. It's a real easter egg hunt looking through them... The book selection and video selection is massive as well. It is easy to spend hours in the stores... http://www.mckaybooks.com/our-story

    Chernobyl

I don't have HBO but I am very curious about that show. Safe nuclear power generation is very well understood. The problem isn't with the reactors or the newer designs per se, it's that politics and money are too often in the equation when sites are selected. Then, once they are running, you have the human element that cannot be accounted for, in it's entirety, by the software and controls used to operate the facility. People violate rules and policies and procedures - not as hazardous with fossil fuel plants but critical with nuclear plants. There just isn't enough efficiency and stability with solar and wind to provide a meaningful amount of the power this country alone requires. All of the ignorance surrounding nuclear power has had the effect of extending and promoting the burning of fossil fuels for power generation indefinitely.
