  1. Very nice indeed. What is the model of pistol on the wall?
  2. Agreed - outstanding performance by Russo. The chemistry between her and Brosnan was excellent, with a solid supporting performance from Dennis Leary. One of the few remakes that bested the original, IMHO.
  3. This is by far my favorite Kevin Costner film -
  4. This weekend’s selection is my all-time favorite “dark comedy”, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. The film could be loosely described as a buddy-cop movie, but there’s much more going on than that. The chemistry between Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr is pure magic. The story is compelling with a good mystery (and a twist). Perhaps my favorite aspect of the film however, is the razor-sharp dialogue - it’s supremely witty, darkly humorous, and laugh out loud funny (albeit not for the kids).
  5. I really enjoy the Tom Clancy based films (except Patriot Games - I don’t know why, but that one never did it for me). This clip from Clear and Present Danger was one of my go-to demos during my Laser Disc heydays... I loved Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny (and she was not hard to look at either!). So many great one-liners - “Whatta you, a fookin’ World traveler?” ”Yea, you blend...” ”My biological clock is tickin’ like this (stomping foot)!”
  6. What do you think of the recasting of 007 as a female? Personally, I think it’s a horrible idea... https://thefederalist.com/2019/07/22/a-female-007-leaves-bond-fans-shaken-not-stirred-and-for-good-reason/
  7. “$70,000?? Hell, my suits cost more than that!”
  8. I have a long list of these - (I’m probably going to embarrass myself here!) Road House Aliens Lethal Weapon (1 and 2) Kill Bill (1 and 2) Smokey and the Bandit (1 only) Cannonball Run Predator Commando
  9. My favorite line in this film: Vampa - “Jacopo is the best knife fighter I’ve ever seen”. Dantes - “Perhaps you should get out more...”.
  10. Do you ever find yourself tired of the seemingly constant flow regurgitated movie offerings at the box office? Avengers End, End, End game (and this time we mean it), Spider-Man 17, the latest Disney butchery of the Star Wars franchise, Fast and Furious 15, and on and on.... Well then you’ve come to the right place. I watch a lot of movies - some good, some bad, many “ok”, and a few great. My focus in this thread will be to primarily spotlight some great movies, with an emphasis on “off the beaten path” films that you may not have heard of. Commentary is welcome (and encouraged), just be respectful and remember - we all have our own tastes. Here’s to hoping that my own may align with some of yours. My maiden offering is the 1999 Mel Gibson film Payback. This film is a delightful mix of crime, drama, sardonic humor and suspense. Aside from the masterful story, the most intriguing feature of this film is it’s cinematography. It is shot in a muted, almost sepia style that reinforces the mood of the film. Outstanding supporting performances from William Devane (Interstellar, Dark Knight Rises), Kris Kristofferson (Blade) and Lucy Liu (Kill Bill) round out this gem of a film, that has a nice twist.
  11. I’m sure I’m late to the party on this, but I was introduced to an app a few weeks ago that I have come to find indispensable. It’s called Shazam, and it’s pure genius... have you you ever been in a restaurant, music store, etc, and heard a song that you really like? Or one that seems vaguely familiar? With Shazam, you open the app, tap “listen”, and within about 3 seconds, you’ll have the title and artist. On IOS (Apple), it will even link to the artist in Apple Music. It also saves all your searches, so when you get home you can search the artist, order the CD, etc... Here is a shot of the App page, and a sample of what you get after identification.
  12. One of the best -
  13. Make sure you have a player capable of playing DVD Audio - not all DVD players can play this format. Also, if you do get the disc, make sure you change to the 96/24 stereo mix in the audio options menu of the disc - the default (as with most DVD Audio discs, annoyingly) is the multi-channel mix, which is nowhere near the quality of the high resolution stereo mix.
  14. Probably the best recording I’ve experienced, across all formats - bar none. Fleetwood Mac, Rumors - DVD Audio
  15. Try in the following order, listening with familiar material at each adjustment: 1. Lower the crossover point. Depending on the speakers I’m running, I cross my sub anywhere from 40hz to 65hz. Never higher than 70hz. When your mains and sub have too much overlap, it never ends well, IMHO. 2. Lower the sub volume. I know, I know - but honestly, sometimes a little less output does wonders to clean up the overlap. 3. Adjust the phase. I list this one last, because it only rarely has proven effective for me. That said, it’s worth a try. if all that fails, then throw in the towel and go DSP?
  16. No matter how big the bass drivers in your main speakers are, I believe a sub is invaluable. I use a sub with everything, even my Legacy Focus pair, and they have 3x 12” woofers per speaker.
  17. The Infinity SM152 is a very “Vega-like” speaker, often available at great value. I’ve heard a couple pair - crazy efficient and can FILL a room with sound.
  18. Awesome garage speakers, if you have the room... They'll also rock the shit out of a party barn ???
  19. Rod warned me to see what it did. douche bag.

    Chernobyl

I think it would be difficult in this day and age - I can only imagine the law suits and injunctions and so on. I’ve wondered the same thoughts w/ regards to the effort during WWII - I just can’t see all those companies switching over to produce rifles, tanks, planes and ammo like they did back then...
  21. Faith No More - Falling To Pieces. the video is dumb as hell, but the song rocks - great gym track!

    Chernobyl

I’ve been watching this HBO series, and I must say, I’m hooked. I feel woefully ignorant of the events that transpired during this tragedy, and I feel horrible that I chuckled at the occasional joke about this event when I was younger. Not only is this series an outstanding testament to the courage and selflessness of so many brave souls, it is an outstanding primer on the technical knowledge of the RBMK reactor. There some honest-to-god heroes showcased in this series who quite possibly saved the world - literally. Well worth your time.

    John Wick 3

Just saw this tonight with my son - This series just keeps getting better! The third installment raised the bar yet again - new and creative fight scenes and locations, fleshing out of supporting characters, just the right amount of humor, and impeccable sound and cinematography... Highly recommended!
  24. Here’s the thread over on Carveraudio to help figure out what’s available - looks like there is a bit of discord surrounding the process... http://carveraudio.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=171&t=20241
  25. AN OUTSTANDING remake of a pivotal scene by some EXTREMELY talented fans - Disney needs to hire these guys ASAP.
