  1. Rat graduated to member status a few months ago - why's he a newbie again?
  2. Outstanding! I'm glad you picked them up, and glad you are so happy with them!
  3. I had the chance to hear a set many years ago. They were being run with a Bryston amp, and sounded wonderful. I got to listen to Jennifer Warnes The Hunter. I still remember the DEPTH of the soundstage as being amazing.... FWIW
  4. I remember listening to this on my parents' Sanyo tube receiver in Quadraphonic surround! Sounded like pure magic back then, but not so much now...
  5. K.D. Lang's "All You Can Eat" is one of my all-time favorite albums. The recording is quite a bit better than her earlier stuff, IMHO. I couldn't agree more on Hendrix's stuff - it's almost like he just had his buddies mix and record most of it.
  6. Having a quality system is a funny thing - At least in my case, it has opened up different types of music to me, based solely on the quality of the recording. Music I would normally never listen to, finds its way into my system, based on great sound alone, then I end up actually enjoying a new type of music. So working this backwards, what album(s) do you love for the music, but wish the quality of the recording were better? For me, it's AC/DC Back In Black - the album flat out rocks, but the sound quality could be so much better....
  7. Yea, they have a way of doing that
  8. I have run into this in the past, with trying to get subs to work in 2 channel systems too - usually with Pioneer and Denon receivers. Go into your speaker set up option in the receiver's menu, and change the sub setting from "LFE" to "Yes", or "On". If your sub setting is on LFE, it will only play LFE info extracted from decoding DD or DTS. If you change it to Yes, or On, it will engage the cross over, and feed the sub all frequencies below the set point. IMHO, you will NOT like the effect the sub has on your 2 channel listening, but give it a try!
  9. I've had personal experience with about 16 different subs, and 2 stick out (the 2 I currently use!) First is the Velodyne DD12 - it is pricey, but comes with a VERY nice mic, and the room eq software is second to none (8 band parametric eq, 6 presets, remote, etc..) The second is the Klipsch RSW 10D - the "D" is critical, as they also make a RSW 10... The 10d has PRODIGOUS output, and goes DEEP.
  10. Thanks. That is the one format I never tried and missed that one totally. I find the DTS Audio disc are great. However, they run the Bass on the "HOT" side. It is deep and full sounding, while the SACD only shines in that area if you are pretty much running full size speakers all the way around the room. That is so true, matching speakers and amps for all 5 or 7 channels is a must with SACD's. For perfectly mixed (IMHO) bass on an SACD, try Dire Straights Brothers In Arms, Patricia Barber Cafe Blue, or Henry Mancinni Ultimate Mancinni. I agree though, bass seems to almost always be perfect on DVD Audio discs.
  11. Got 'em! Tried it out. Nice player. Looks and works like new! Decodes the HDCD no problem. No skipping. PM me if you are interested in it. I'm knee deep in CD changers, mostly Sony. Mark, How much for the Mannheim Steamroller CD? I'll send the others back. Kevin, Color yourself an instant Karma winner! I have another copy, so please keep that one, and enjoy! Mark
  12. Just as the title says: What is the first album that you ever bought - could be vinyl, reel to reel, 8-track, cassette, CD, or digital download... Or all of the above. For me, Cassette = Van Halen 1984 CD = Def Leppard Hysteria
  13. Also not to hijack, but what is the easiest way to convert FLAC to mp3? I have dbpoweramp, and it had a converter - but it makes me open each album and convert them one at a time... Maddening!
  14. My true love of SACD lies in the hi-res stereo tracks, 99% of he time. I can count on one hand the number of surround SACDs that I prefer over the 2 channel mix (Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon, Toto IV, The Who Tommy, Steely Dan Gaucho) Most SACDs are "hybrid" - meaning they also contain a normal CD version of the album on the disk, which any cd or DVD player will play. But then you're defeating the purpose of buying the SACD, unless you plan to buy a player in the future. So Kevin is correct - to get either te surround OR hi-resolution stereo mixes, your player needs to say "SACD" and have the 6 or 8 channel analog outs. I understand now thanks, I have also seen the with 5.1 channel is that also acceptable? I think what you are asking, is that if a DVD player has on-board DD & DTS decoding, via a six channel analog output, will it automatically decode SACD (and/or DVD Audio)...? The answer is unfortunately no. Both SACD and DVD Audio require different decoding algorithms within the payer (DSD for SACD, and MLP for DVD Audio) to extract those signals fom the disc. Most mid to high end players from Denon, Marantz, Pioneer, Oppo, and Yamaha offer SACD and DVD Audio compatability. Sony, however, only supports SACD (as they developed SACD, DVD Audio is their competition). Both formats are dying, unfortunately... It is only a matter of time. To make matters worse, the emerging "DD True HD", and "DTS Master Audio" formats on Blu Ray are primarily being used for only live concert videos, and to showcase (mostly awful and overdone) 5.1 channel mixes. This leaves us with no TRUE high resolution (192/24) stereo sources:-( Maybe I will be getting into vinyl...:-)

  16. Kevin, I think a few of my CDs are HDCD - I will go through and send you a few to try out - just pm me your address. Btw, If you're comparing HDCD to SACD, you are in for a disappointment.... HDCD is NOTHING like SACD, IMHO.... Mark
  17. LOL! Have the 9500ix in the Z71 and the 9500ci in the Eldorado. The ci has saved my ass multiple times in the last 3 years. I used to use a Passport, but I pulled it out shortly after moving to Montana. They just don't bother you up here, unless you're going over 90, or driving like a jack-a$$...(BOTH of which I used to do when I was much younger!)
  18. Or you could live by the wise words of NWA -- "F*ck the Police"
  19. How could I forget - The Doobie Brothers, "China Grove"...
  20. Very nice bike - I remember wanting a bullet bike right out of high school. The ad for the Ninja 1000 said "0-60 faster than you can read this." Further proof that teenage boys only think of speed & sex:-)
  21. As cool as that would be, I think that you should hang on to all those drivers - They are getting VERY hard to come by.... Gotta keep back-ups for speakers of that vintage!
  22. Thanks Perry. LOL.....are you talking Bose Wave Guide? Bose is the best - Oprah says so...
  23. That one is up there for me, too...
