    Chernobyl

I have to wonder if such a disaster were to happen in a western nation if we would have the cajonas to evacuate a city and designate it an exclusion zone, and not let anyone back in? I wonder if we could react fast enough to limit the number of people who would die from radiation? Perhaps we would, I just don't know, and I hope we never find out.

    Chernobyl

At the time Chernobyl happened, before anything had been announced, my brother-in-law who had studied nuclear engineering called us and said that there had clearly been a meltdown, somewhere in Europe. He had seen the radiation numbers spike and was able to figure out approximately where it was. He actually managed to figure out that it was likely Chernobyl that had booked off. Sadly, there have been quite a few meltdowns through the years, and yes, there were some incredible, unsung heroes at the Chernobyl disaster. Given that I live only a couple of kilometers from one of Canada's larger sites, I'm clearly not one to dwell on possible disasters.
  3. Zack has great taste. That was very enjoyable. Thanks very much for suggesting it.
  4. Welcome @Bradrock - the site should be reasonably fast. It can take a moment sometimes if there's a lot to show - especially if you are following a lot of things, but it should be quite reasonable to use. Don't worry if you missed one C1, I'm sure there will be others coming up. Hide your wallet when browsing, here - OCCD is real (trust me, I've fallen into the abyss, since joining). That said, the value for what you wind up with is incredible.
  5. Welcome Drew. You've found the right place for help and guidance on bringing those units back to life. I'll defer to the numerous folks who know their way around the insides of electronic devices, but you should be able to find help and guidance at every level, here.
  6. OOPS! I guess we now know which seams you didn't reglue ... yet.
  7. Nice work restoring the surrounds. Well done!
  8. @Daddyjt if you go WAY back in this, you'll see that there wasn't a separate chamber for the mids, and that Carverpro was worried about changing the acoustic effect if he created one. He found that without something to baffle the back of the mids the woofer was pushing them, as you might expect with something that big, and the air it moves.
  9. Welcome @bluelick - that sounds like quite the set of equipment and appreciation for it, that you got from your Dad. It also sounds like you are pretty adept at working on things. In that case, there are plenty of people here who can help if anything does go awry (myself excepted - keep soldering irons well away from me ). Here's hoping the '200 fires up flawlessly for you, and that you wind up wishing you had the opportunity to start using it 10 years ago when your dad gave it to you. Sounds like he was quite the fellow.
  10. All I can say is WOW - beautiful work! And I'm really glad to hear how fantastic they sound. All in all an amazing project - thanks for letting us follow along.
  11. Ouch, that's a tough choice, given the speakers. I can easily see great reasons to go either way.
  12. Way to go @Carverpro ! Sounds like you've created some incredible "monsters," Dr. F. Wish I could offer info on your impedance query, but I am curious what the answer is.
  13. The red gasket maker should go fine on a Cerwin Vega. You can just refer to the spots as being Carver rash. ? BTW, thanks for the idea - I don't need it now, but it's great to have that in my back pocket, in case.
  14. I've learned that if we knew what the work would actually entail, that very few projects would ever be taken on. Embrace it if not for our gulable optimistim the human race woul still be living in caves, and listening to rock drums. Mind you, with the right rocks you could probably get some decent bass...
  15. Self flagellation at its best! Glad to see someone else doing it instead of me - the difference is the results for you will be great. My attempts usually just circle back to trying to get back to square one with as little lost ground as possible. Those are going to Rock when you are done.
  16. Congrats on another "happy" spin around our favourite star! Live it up - you deserve it.
  17. +1 - best bait I've come across, too.
  18. Time to adopt some cats! I can personally recommend black cats as being very appreciative of a good home ... But - now you have to protect the speaker grills.
  19. I was going to suggest some sort of heavier wire mesh, like chicken wire, which shouldn't block the bass, and be a bit harder for mice to chew through - but only a little bit harder, but I was worried if they might rattle and vibrate against the back of the speaker. Then I realized, at the volumes you're running, you'll never hear that. Mesh is only ever going to delay a mouse, slightly, so what might make more sense is to glue a couple of port sized plugs of something like foam to a backer board, that you can easily pop them into place when done,ot out to rock it. If you design it right you could put a handle on it so you don't even need to bend down. Or you could electrify the area around the speakers. ?
  20. You know, the thought of getting caught in one of those when you crank it up, ought to scare any mouse far more than my herd of cats do. I'm guessing that the port, on the back is located fairly low? What about putting something around the port that might be either too slippery (aluminium foil?), or sticky (double sided tape) to just dissuade them from getting to the opening? Totally cool and impressive, BTW! I'm sure the neighbours, the next county over, are impressed too!
  21. Oops! or should that be "Doh!!!!" It "seemed" plausible, and I've heard of stranger things...
  22. Just curious @dennismiller55 - are you suggesting putting the mothballs IN the speaker, or just behind it? Most mothballs I've seen, recently, are hard, and I'd worry they might rattle (depending on the level of sound padding/insulation inside, of course)?
  23. I can definitely understand your worry with them. I'm about to put some sort of shield over the speaker of my new to me Sub, but mine isn't to protect from mice, it's to protect from the reason I don't ever worry about mice. My in-house mouse removal service ensures my home is a mouse's worst nightmare. Just look to the avatar x 5 - fullish teeth, claws, and lust for fresh mouse-meat on the paw. For the record, I actually had a mouse commit suicide rather than face the "monsters!" It was surrounded by 3 of them, in the middle of the floor and squeaking it's last wishes. Since the 3 monsters couldn't decide who got which part, the mouse made a dive for a return-air vent (under some furnature) that was not mouse-sized. I found him there, months later - thoroughly mummified. When not in use, my speakers actually have hard covers I've built to protect the speaker grills, which are highly desirable scratching posts, and I'm about to orient my sub from downfacing to frontfacing, where it will need some protection. (Yes, I know downfacing is great, but where it needs to fit, that won't work).
  24. So many of their best songs happened almost in spite of Becker and Fagan.
