  1. My question is "why would you?" I'm going to wager 99.999% of the time, the source will be digital. Perhaps if you are doing your own recording, it "might"make a bit of sense, but the 10" size is very limiting.
  2. I've just picked up one of these: https://squeakycleanvinyl.com I haven't had the chance to even fully unpack it, let alone try it, but I'll try to let everyone know what it's like, when I've had the chance to use it a bit. I like that it does allow for a rinse pass very easily, but I have no Idea how good or bad the whole thing will work.
  3. Thanks @Sk1Bum - new to me, too - I didn't notice Steve sneak that one out.
  4. @Nahash5150, I've found it sometimes a bit hit or miss whether the list comes up, but I do think it's often an anomaly of the browser being used. One thing I have discovered is that I do often have to scroll WAY WAY down to find where it's popped up the list (after typing in, say, @ N a h...). For some reason it gets stuck way below the point of entry. Again, that may be a browser anomaly - I tend to use Opera quite a bit, and it does have its quirks. Question related to this. I see people using the "mention" fomat in the Chatbox, but it doesn't seem to do anything - at least that I can see.
  5. Welcome @Arden - glad you decided to say "Hi!" You never liked your wallet, anyway, did you? ? No sense warning you about OCCD - it's WAY beyond too late for you, so instead of my usual Welcome plaque, we'll head straight to something more appropriate. Sit back and enjoy the addiction - and know you are in good company.
  6. This may by a little too mainstream for some, and not quite really new, but it's the lead track off an album that I find myself returning to again, and again, of late. For what's ostensibly a guitar album, the balance of instruments is great - there's none of the "hear me - it's my album" attitude that can easily take over when an artist does a solo album. YMMV.
  7. Thanks @Daddyjt and @Charlie! I finally got to listen to these. Excellent!
  8. Thanks @Daddyjt- I think this is a very valid departure from the "What Are You Listening To, Now" thread., which, I admit, I find very useful for checking out existing music (often older, and perhaps forgotten, in my case). This looks like a great formum for all of us to present new things we come across that we really think should be shared. My wallet may not like you for this, but my ears definitely do. I am, however, a bit worried about you saying you "really don't need more gear" (even if it perhaps may be true) - just stay quiet and I'll call 911 for you.
  9. The attention span of a computer is only as long as it's power cord! - Unknown Nothing is ever as easy as it seems at first, or as impossible as it seems in the middle, or as finished as it seems in the end. -- Barry Kort
  10. Welcome Eric! Nothing like diving in at the deep end! You clearly have it bad, or rather, good! There are plenty of very technically adept folks, here who (myself, excepted) can help out with your C1 problems, etc. So you are definitely in the right place. When you have a chance we'd love to see some pictures of your system, and I know the techs like open case pictures.
  11. I have to agree, completely with many of the comments - it's clear that over playing is one of the biggest causes of ear plugging events, along with the "that just t'ain't music" items. I took Kevin's question to be which songs you used to like / listen to, but now can't handle. I thought a lot about this, but in the end, I have to say that while there are many songs that wind up in this zone, temporarily, they all eventually cycle back around to be okay to listen to, again. I guess I just really like what I like, and avoid what I don't.
  12. I'm a relatively recent arrival, and admit I was quite taken, aback at the welcome I got. I can honestly say, the folks here are every bit as great as they see, and more. I had always been enamored of Carver gear in my younger years, but I always saw it as out of reach. Until very recently, I was running off a non-Carver receiver, too. No worries what you run - one bonus of this group is they are not sobs, or they hide it well. As for expensive, yes, and no. You may spend a bit, bt I can promise you will be hard pressed to get better gear (and sound) without going to a system 10X the price. Carver equipment, as I learned, was not hugely expensive in it's day - it just sounded like it was. And now, with many people selling off 2-channel systems for surround sound, it's surprisingly cost effective. The one gotcha is that due to it's age, it will need to be recapped, etc. - there are lots of folks here who can do that for a surprisingly decent price, if you aren't one to tackle it yourself. That brings us to the BillD update for the C1. In layman's terms, it involves updating many of the internal components of the already great C1 preamp, with much newer, quieter and better components. It goes way beyond a Cap-Job, and brings the C1 up to date to rival or best many state of the art preamps, for sound. There are also some other ad-on updates as well, that the tech's here can tell you more about, but it's a way to get a high-end preamp for very reasonable $'s. You will soon be overwhelmed by OCCD - it's insidious, addictive, and unavoidable, so just embrace it. I was happy with a C-9 SH unit, until I got bitten. 3 more Carver devices, and 2 major overhauls later, I still watch for bargains everywhere. Take our time, and enjoy the quest. Until then, enjoy the music. Don't worry about your system's home. We're (mostly) human here (aside from a few, self-declared aliens). We mostly have or have had spouses, so the compromise for marital bliss is truly appreciated.
  13. Welcome to the group @Bwest! I agree with @loner_t that the fellow you met was very likely @Daddyjt - between the speaker addiction and the insistance to dive into fixing your Polks - his talents in that respect are truly amazing - he rebuilt my C1 & M1.0t. That said, there are a number of members from the SLC area who would no doubt would do what they could to help you get sorted out. If you haven't found it, there is also a very active Polk speaker group as well, and there are several folks, here that share membership. You can definitely do worse that an updated Carver Preamp/Poweramp system - especially at the price. Let us know your musical interests, and at some point we'd love to see pictures of what you have - whatever you are running.
  14. Clark could always balance really interesting tech, with a really great story. These days I find SF is all focused on the tech with little or no story. I miss writing like Childhood's End and the Rama series. Oops, I suppose I should have added one, so it would be in 3's.
  15. Or perhaps he just became a bleached blond...?
  16. Welcome @TFM35X! While I can't help on the technical side, there are definitely some gurus who can help. It dos sound like someone let the smoke out pretty badly on your unit, but if the key parts are intact, the rest can be fixed. Sounds like you are gathering a good set of test gear as well - clearly the M1.5t is not the last fixer-upper in your sights. It's always great to see someone looking to help keep semi-vintage gear working and sounding great. Keep us posted on your projects, and good luck!
  17. Welcome to the group, @Buck115 any OCCD addict is welcome here, as long as you aren't expecting an intervention. Very nice system - where have you hidden the R-to-R?
  18. I agree with the rest of the folks - there are numerous options that provide for syncing files, that make complete sense in this case. In your case, I wouldn't suggest running the sync constantly, so that you can decide when it's save to update - just in case you have a faux pas and need to bring things back. Yes, the copy stored away gives you that backup, but it's really easy to make a mistake and have it automatically updated as soon as it gets plugged in. Looking at what you wrote, you also have another problem, coming soon to an audio system near you - at 1.6tb, you're headed for needing more space real soon now. Using a sync mechanism can allow you to duplicate multiple drives, or you can choose to go with a way to combine multiple physical drives int one logical drive. More points of possible failure, but you are one of the few who understands what a backup, means, no no worry there. Good luck, and have fun with it.
  19. Seeing @AndrewJohn's suggestion of Spaghetti Westerns got me thinking about some of the classic ones, but then I thought, no, this is one of the few movies I will always tune in, if it happens to be playing: This is a perfect example of how "nobody is safe" from the hilarious barbs of Mel Brooks' humour. It's also a movie that could never be made in this day and age - it's as far from politically correct as you can get, but Brooks targets everyone equally. Every time I watch it, there's something new that I see to laugh at. A guilty pleasure, to say the least.
  20. Ah, serenity and romance at it's best! Most definitely. Not someone I'd want to "verbally" spar with...
  21. Nothing on that list that isn't, at least, good fun. No embarassment there! Totally cool! I had not seen it until fairly recently (within the last couple of years), so I looked it up. I watched the B&W version, first. It is still incredibly relevant and very well done! I still collapse into a fit of literal hysteria when I think about this one - something to do with the "toaster" in it. Took me ages to recover when it first came out.
  22. I would say "generally no" it doesn't really affect the unit sonically. It does mean replacing the volume control with one that isn't quite the same, but I don't believe there is any effect on quality, and if you are not used to a C1 without the new volume control, you would probably never notice anything. I suspect that the reason some may not be inclined towards doing the remote mod, aside from just maintaining originalility, is that it's (a) difficult (b) a hassle and (c) very precise, finicky work that takes some very serious skill and far more patience than an normal human being possesses. Oh, one more thing - it's also a serious Pain in the A$$ to do. I was able to beg one of the great techs, here, (Daddyjt) into doing it for me, and I couldn't be happier, but I do realize what I asked of him, and it wasn't easy work for him, even with his skill level. The precision, reqired, is something I wouldn't try to replicate, but I definitely appreciate what it took, and how welcome the remote is. Please keep in mind, too, that the only thing the remote controls is volume, so it's not going to give you full power/source-selection/etc. That was all I needed/wanted.
  23. Given how great you've done the theater motif, it makes sense to go all the way. Good luck with it, and enjoy the popcorn! ?
  24. Welcome to the group, Nick. Nice setup, you have, and don't fret about the AR sub - unless "you" don't like the sound, enjoy it. Sunfire gear is, apparently, a bit hard to find info on, but there are some folks here with some great technical knowledge (Yours Truly excepted, beyond plugging in Power and RCA cords). Good luck, and enjoy the music, or movies!
