  1. I think I have a very vague recallection of seeing an ad for them way back in the day. I definitley have never seen or heard them, though. You can try telling SWMBO that they are really just modern art, but beware that you have your fast running shoes on.
  2. This looks like something that should be in the Guidelines tab or similar, at the top, where it can be kept easily available for new folks, and those of us with really short memories. It just seems prone to getting lost or buried in a thread.
  3. Welcome, @Mike-777 - nice way to get into Carver gear! As nice as what you had was, and your son should be pretty happy to have it, I think you'll find your new system a real step up. Nice taste in music! Enjoy!!
  4. Welcome to C!, Jason! Nothing like diving in at the deep end. Can we assume from your @Kappa man name that the amps you're looking for are likely to be driving some nice Infinities? You certainly have the same view of Bob Carver that many of us do. In this day and age, acquiring Carver equipment can be an amazingly cost effective way to get some really top notch sound - especially if it gets touched up (read recapped, and maybe even modded where suitable). It IS, however, a very addictive hobby, as many (most? perhaps all?) of us can attest. I was warned of the perils of OCCD when I started. I had 1 component. I'm very well behaved in my collecting, so I only have 5 components now. So far... sigh! When you have a chance, let us know what you have (and post some pictures, when you can) and what you like to listen to. In the mean time, enjoy the music!
  5. That is the reason you experiment, after all. There's always that chance the results will not only be positive but greatly so. So what if some paths lead nowhere - often enough they do. If the positive feelings haven't worn off, by now, they are clearly real and not just wishful imagination. If it sounds good to you, then it doesn't matter if it does for others. In other words, ENJOY!
  6. Welcome @KoolCaT- awesome way to get into the world of Carver. The C1 is a very flexible and up-gradable preamp. As others have noted, it can be adapted to take a remote volume control. I begged one of the tech's here into that for mine, but it is a bit of a daunting task to do well/right. The electronic part is not so bad, but the physical mods require precision, and more talent than I can muster. That said, I truly appreciate having it. In the mean time, don't forget to enjoy the music! 🎼
  7. Ouch! Yes, way too easy to get hurt with that much mass.
  8. Removable horns sound interestng - and that's No Bull! (Sorry @4krow- given your title, my lack of willpower kinda took over...)
  9. Welcome to the group. You're definitely in the right place for help with your Carver gear. There are plenty of very knowledgeable people, here, who can guide you, or in serious cases, do repairs. Carver gear is eminently maintainable, thanks to people like we have here. There are also those of us who are more comfortable with the covers safely screwed on, where our clumsy fingers are safely out of the way of things that can go Zap! I'm sure the techs will offer advice on your amp and receiver issues. With respect to the Silver 7 components, what are you looking to do? Sell them, build something with them? Find the rest of the pieces to (re)create Silver-7's? In the mean time, welcome, and remember to enjoy the music!
  10. Welcome, oh fellow OCCD addict! No point warning you of the OCCD pitfalls, so we'll focus on the positives of hoarding great piles of Bob's best! Thanks for coming out of the lurker zone, and joining in. Don't worry about typing prowess - I DO touch-type, but most of the time here I use the on-screen keyboard or a little handheld Bluetooth keyboard to type on, which makes me think a bit more about what I want to say... though rarely enough. 🙄 Since you've been reading things, you already know how willing people, here, are to help answer questions, so please feel free to ask.
  11. The welcome, here is pretty amazing. I'm a recent arrival, and still can't get over the acceptance, here. This isn't just a group of audioheads, but an all around amazing group of people. Many of us tend to gravitate towards the C1, because it's just a good balance of function and form, and lends itself very well to doing fantastic upgrades to. It's not the only choice, as others have noted. Keep in mind, many of the preamps, including the C1 have SH built in. That said, I have both a C1 and a C9 in my system. My C1's SH has had the Gundry DIP mod, while the C9 is stock. Not sure which I prefer. The PM series of amps are all too often overlooked and undervalued, compared to the consumer series. I think too many people get turned off by the fact they have fans. There are certainly folks, here, who have veritable farms of PM amps driving their audio systems. As for suitable threads, \i'll have to leave that to the more technically adept, while I go try to get my multimeter probes out of my nose. 😉 BTW, I admire folks like you who are willing and able to take on your own work. I think you will find that you are not considered annoying, here, but your efforts and questions will be embraced and welcomed. I've seen some cases where people have gotten truly amazing help to guide them to solving problems. Don't be fooled that the M1.5t is a step up from the M1.0t. The M1.0t appears to have been depowered for marketing reasons, and can easily be modded into a monster. I can't get mine to flash the meters above the 2nd LED without blistering my ears. That said, there aren't many ways you can go wrong with these amps - they all date from a time when gear was meant to be repairable, unlike today's equipment. Don't forget to take time to enjoy the music, and remember to let us know what you like!
  12. Welcome @Butcher - nothing like diving into the Carver wonderland with both feet! That's quite the short term OCCD collection of gear. I'd warn you of the addictive nature of collecting Carver gear, but, um, well, methinks it a we bit too late for you - you'l fit in great! I do love your analogy to the NeXT cubes - I dare say they were also pretty tightly packed inside. If, unlike Yours Truly, you know which which end of a multi meter probe goes forward, there are lots o folks here who can help guide you through the PM-900. The SH is definitely still a valid unit, both from the purest sense, where you are trying to achieve the absolute sonic hologram effect, and for the overall effect it can have on sound (I' sure 'll get arguments on that, but I do't care - I never turn mine off, aside from a couple of tracks I've found that it somehow interacts badly on). Many of the preamps will already include it, or there are separate units like the C-9, as you noted.
  13. I remember when that first came out, and always thought it would be a great way to pretty much eliminate any high frequencies, and muddy the sound. The idea of coating the grooves of a record just makes me very uncomfortable. If you are inclined to try it, I'd recommend you give it a go on a throwaway LP, first, but listen to it enough before so you can compare.
  14. I think I recognized 2 artists... 😕
  15. Beyond that, please pick anything from Trans Siberian Orchestra. Any album fits the topic!
  16. Silly question time - was there ever a "normal" CD release of this, or was it all just the "special" package with the screen, etc.?
  17. You aren't alone in your preference for post-Waters PF - aside from Animals, which I personally like the most. There is definitely something very wonky about the pricing (note these $$$ are from Amazon Canada's site): LP Version $46.00 CD Version $486.97 (yes, that IS real!!!!) This is a case where I might have to buy the LP version, as much as I prefer CDs. Hopefully they will eventually issue a Blue-Ray copy, but I'm worried that it may be somewhere north of $10,000 by the time it comes out!
  18. C O O L !!! I just checked the date 3 times to make sure it's not April 1st!
  19. Given the way that ultrasonic cleaners work, and the nature of the waves, I'm not sure that this is quite true. This sounds like someone coming from an audio background, and thinking in terms of a speaker projecting sound waves in one direction. Most ultrasonic cleaners are going to be a bit different from that. If that were the case, then cleaning anything else in one would only result in cleaning the two outer sides of the object, however 3-D objects placed in the cleaning tank get cleaned all over, including inside various nooks and crannies. I wouldn't want to stack my LPs right up against one-another, but I'd bet if you leave even a reasonable space between them, they will all clean quite nicely. Caveat: I'm no expert on ultrasonics and I've never actually tried, this, so I make no claim of true understanding, here.
  20. Sorry @oldtexasdog, I have't had time to even think about playing any vinyl. To be honest, I have about 6 or 7 CDs I haven't opened the shrinkwrap on. Hopefully soon, but no guarantees - life's been a bit insane of late.
  21. Welcome Peter! Nice setup, and at a great bargain, on top! There are lots of folks here who can, and will happily help you with the modding (myself excepted - I'd happily help, but you wouldn't be happy with it. ). It sounds like you are quite capable when it comes to working on the gear, so yo will find plenty of kindred spirits, among he people, here. 🙂 I the mean time, enjoy the music, and let us know what you listen to. 🎼
  22. In the same vein as some of the other electronics repair ones, rather than purely audio , I know that X-ray Tony B has been a favorite of a number of us, here. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=x+ray+tony+b+&app=desktop&persist_app=1 A big thank you to all, here, for some really great ideas that I'm going to have to check out. 😁
  23. I agree with the "Beautiful system " comment. As to the temperature, I don't see a freaking minus sign in front of that number. What? Too hot to go golfing. 😉
  24. Great - it's good to have someone filling the gap between the West coasters, and those of us, more mid-country (I'm just East of Toronto). Not much, from the East Coast, at least among active participants, right now.
  25. Welcome, @Chris Della Mattia! Nice setups, indeed! I can imagine that the only way to reasonably get those Amazing Silvers, up, North of the '49th, would have been an epic roadtrip, and I suspect they would not have appreciated the trek. I'll second @DrummerJuice's question, as to where in this snow buried, frigid land are you (and Owen, you can go do something rude with your weather out there - I had to dig out my snowblower, today!)?
