I'd say the terms Musician and Artist are very applicable, @Ln310. Anyone who can play in the Jazz/Fusion world is decidedly not lacking in serious talent.

Welcome to the group! Very nice couple of setups, you have. I'd say there's nothing novice about your status. I can can imagine that the sub us likely a bit much for an appt. - probably more suited to, um, maybe a stadium... Let us know your musical interests, and relax and enjoy the music - while trying not to rattle dishes in the nearby apartments ... too much.

Glad you did come back, @Bwest - you have my admiration for hanging in there as well as you are. I'm doing okay - I had a lot more time to "prepare" over all, and several months towards the end when she wasn't home any more, which meant it wasn't as . That said, what you describe about your feelings is absolutely 100% the same here. From everyone I know who have been through it, at least the first year is going to be rough, for sure. After that you hopefully start coming to terms with it, but, well, there really aren't any words - just know I get it, and nothing you feel is wrong - it all shows how much you cared, and still do. Feel free to PM me if you ever want to chat - I'm also happy to call and give you my number, though a heads-up I'm North of the border from you, so we I'm happy to put things on my nickel for calls - my long distance plan covers the US. :-) For now, keep putting one foot in front of the other, and know you were there through when it mattered most. -

I'm so sorry @Bwest- having gone though essentially the same thing as you, in the same time frame (lost my wife the end of April), really I feel for you. The group, here were my saving grace. Someone, here will likely be able to get ahold of Mark for you. He had been bouncing around the country with travelling jobs for a bit. Good luck getting your friend's Polks patched up and singing, again. In the mean time, take care, and if you need someone to commiserate with, don't hesitate to get in touch. -

Do I need an OPPOD sign to go with the OCCD sign? -

OOPo'S - Sorry @Sk1Bum - my bad. I just thought I remembered someone lamenting that the 105 didn't have any when they got one. I should know not to trust my memory, by now. When you can't remember your own name half the time, leaping before you look is unwise to say the least! Doh!!!!! -

Not sure whether to laugh or cry at your original description, @Butcher. Perhaps it doesn't like the hopps based beverages, maybe something closer to pure alcohol would work better? When shopping around, do beware that many of the newer SACD and Blue-Ray systems will only provide digitial outputs - no analog. Not a problem if you have a decent DAC to do the conversion, but highly annoying if you go to hook it up and there's no hole to fit the RCA cables to your stereo. IIRC one of the OPPOs suggested falls into that category, but I can't tell you which, for sure. -

Brian_at_HHH replied to Web's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
Welcome @Web! Even though I'm using primarily SS Carver gear, I completely get the love of"that kind of distortion" from tubes (I'm happy to have a tube buffer in my setup at least). There are plenty of folks here who know their way around the BillD mods for the C1 (which are fantastic, BTW), and plenty who can speak to the virtues of Bob's Crimson amps, too. For now, relax, and enjoy the music, while you tilt a Porter or Stout, and when you can post some pics of what you're listening to. Take care and stay well! -

Lets have a chat about all sorts of speakers
Brian_at_HHH replied to Butcher's topic in Loudspeakers
Ah, my good @Butcher, you, sir, are in exquisitely fine form, today! Fantastic entertainment, and so absolutely on the mark. I can't claim to have had the luxury to hear too many speakers, so I can't answer with authority, but from what I have heard, and what I've been told by people that I trust, versus those who claim to be golden eared, but really have tin cans with gold spray paint. The various types of planars are certainly worth considering, but they bring with them many new quirks. Those can run from odd and abusive impedance curves, needing decent subs to supplement them, or just an understanding they can sound a bit different, but very good. @kve777's suggestion of the Pendragon's is one that I keep pondering. Just beware that the company name is Tekton (not tektRon), and Pendragon is just the speaker model - one of many. They are at https://www.tektondesign.com and are surprisingly affordable. Also an option are the open baffle units. Witness some of the Carver designs that cover both the ribbon and open planar designs, and by all appearances, provide excellent sound. In short, don't restrict yourself to cabinet units. Sample the other flavours, if only for fun, and to help stave off the audio component acquisition withdrawal symptoms. Keep having fun with it, no matter what you do. -

Welcome!! Glad you found your way here, from the carveraudio site. There are lots of folks here who can help with your silvers, if you need it. And lots more who will be happy to offer moral support, in tackling the job. Make sure you have fun with it. -
carver m1.0t update
Brian_at_HHH replied to carlos alberto's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
Welcome, Carlos! You've certainly got a great amp to be looking at updating! Tons of capacity in there to take it to entirely new levels, or just add some new, fresh caps to it and give it many decades more life. Are you looking at doing the work yourself, or looking for someone to do it for you? Either way, there are lots here who can help you out. I have an upgraded M1.0t which is up to what is called the Mk II, Opt 2. level. It's extremely clean and puts out massively more power, now, than I have any sane use for. I have less than no regrests going that route, though I admit I did not touch it myself - I and the amp would likely both be fried had I tried that. I can certainly attest to the sound quality (and quantity) after having the work done - well worth while. In any case, please post some pictures of your setup when you have a couple of postings under your belt, and enjoy! -
New guy, thanks to all members

Welcome @JoJo! Sounds like somebody did a number on those speakers. As long as the ribbons are actually okay and the main drivers work, it's likely going to be a reasonable effort to restore them to decent working order. I can't claim to have heard an myself, but by all accounts from people I trust, when working properly, Carver Amazing's live up to their name. SInce yours clearly are not, it sounds (no pun intended) like there's something technically at fault. Your amp and all should certainly be able to blow you out of the room - that setup should be able to rock a good sized stadium. SInce neither of your speakers seem to be doing much, I would hazard a guess that you are right to be looking into the crossovers. Something in there is not passing signal to the drivers. If it were just a driver gone, I would expect some of the woofers or one ribbon or the other to be giving you sound. Perhaps something is cross connecting the cables thanks to the meddler? Hopefully not, as that would be very bad for most amps. There are definitely folks, here, who are very adept at how to create good working crossovers for these speakers. Also, in a pinch, there's at least one person on the group who I think still does ribbon repair. So hang in there - I'm sure there's enough guidance here to get them singing properly, again. -
Well, I think your psychiatric team were last seen headed upstream to the upper reaches of the Amazon, babbling incoherently all the way. Odds are, if they go far enough, they may catch up with mine. If you knew what I look like, you'd know "crouching in hedges" isn't terribly viable, which applies to any form of stealth. Given their weight, be glad you didn't opt for 10" or 12" speakers, not that they would be well suited to a full range speaker. You might have to shore up the joists and subfloor. Sounds like you have a nice set of gear ready to drive them. Getting sound down to 50hz is no mean feat. I'd say you are getting some pretty good results from that folded horn. Acoustic paint always struck me as likely to be a PITA to work with - just from needing a lot of delicate handling. And I totally get using a veritable forest of clamps and still having a gap. I'm glad that you persevered. I find full range / folded horns fascinating, as they just seem to defy logic for me, yet the results are undeniable from my limited opportunities to hear them. You're almost there- in the home stretch - keep going, but no hernia's allowed. Show us some pics of the whole system together (or intermediate steps before that, too). Thanks, again for posting this - I've certainly enjoyed it, and learned from it.

Nice work! I rather like the look of the corian on those, and yeah, it ought to make them pretty darn stable. Hope it has the desired effect on the bass. Those are starting to look really good. Flipping back to your earlier picks, you are FAR more than one step closer. There's been a lot more work on those in the mean time that you aren't admitting to.

@PMAT sounds like @Albikes will fit in here, perfectly. We definitely have all levels of audio nutcases um, er, addicts, here! Enabling one another seems to be rather strongly encouraged. Not that "I" would have noticed, or contributed .... -
VERY nice!!!! Like the guitars hanging in the background - I presume there's at least a small amp for them, hiding behind one of the Carver speakers? Makes for a great setup to play along.

Welcome! Nothing like diving straight in at the deep end! I'd warn you of the perils of OCCD, but it's clearly WAY too late, so instead, Welcome to the Club, and Enjoy! -
Only if you stop drinking! 😸

Yeah, along with a ton of time to rewrite the whole thing into something more than HTML 0.9.

Interesting? I'll go play around with it. I have that installed, but I typically use Opera, FF and Chrome. Kewl - nice to know what the root cause was, in case others get caught. Thanks!!!
