Great - more class added to the site! I do see a fair number of Carver toys from QC on Canuck Audio Mart - usually just a bit far for me to go pick up. I'm just East of TO. -
Welcome to the group! Sounds like your Audio tech knowledge is quite decent, in spite of what you say, but I don't think any of the Carver mods will be using tubes the size of what you used to work with. Then again, from some of the crazy creations I've seen, out there, I could well be proved wrong. You have certainly gathered together quite the collection of Carver toys to play with, there. We're glad you found your way here - there's lots of friendly help out there when you do get to working on the other pieces, just don't take any core electronics advice from Yours Truly, or you may wish you'd stuck to automation and TV repairs. For now, join in the fun and remember to enjoy the music.

Welcome to the group! I can certainly attest to the clean sound of a BillD'ed C1. I can't offer any tech advice (and if I do, be afraid - be very afraid), but there are lots of folks here who can. Nice set of equipment! It's nice to see someone else running Grado carts, BTW! I know some folks might shy away from them, but I've always liked them, and I'm quite happy with mine. -

Welcome Bill! Glad you decided to step out from the shadows and join in. You definitely have more electronics savvy than I do, so I'll defer to those who know, here on your questions. You certainly have equipment that has plenty of potential to keep sounding great far far into the future. For now, join in the fun, and remember to enjoy the music! -
@chiroacademy, out of curiosity, do you have "cleaning days, where you go through a bunch of albums in a go, or is it more clean-and-play? Also, since you are only doing the major cleaning about once per year, what do you do if you play an album in between major cleanings. And I do admire your setup for this!

Hmmmm... You might be onto something, there, Rod! Now were would I put a used dishwasher, and can I get one in the Carver Anodized grey...?

Welcome to the site, @Terist! It's always great when a long-time Carver lover joins us. When you have a chance and get a few more posts under your belt, we'd love to see what you are currently listening with, whether you have them cranked to "11" or higher.

Are you trying to launder money, now? The official answer on how frequently, is every time before you play the record. The reality is, of course, much less, as we are all human (though many would except me from that). There are some fantastic DIY designs out there for ultrasonic units that limit the cost. The key is to start with a unit that has a large and deep enough tub to get the full groove area into the liquid. Starting with an off the shelf ultrasonic unit will ease the need to worry about transducer position - though if you are as pedantic as most of us, you'll likely strip the unit down to see if you can optimise them. And yes, you don't want some massive, industrial US cleaner that's going to flatten out and smooth the grooves on you. That really would be a kick, and not to the rear, either.

Welcome HOME, Steve! Nice to see you've found your way back.

Your OCCD is minor compared to a lot of folks, here - at least, so far. And, yes, follow @AndrewJohn's advice - it doesn't really help the OCCD, but you are happier with the "journey!" 😁 -
Welcome to the site, @Hal, and I think I may have missed a welcome to @Blueprintt along the way as well. It seems that both of you are well and truly infected with OCCD, so I can't offer any worthwhile warnings about it's perils to either of you. Hal, you had the good sense to get things refreshed. Regardless of where or who, with your equipment having been boxed up for a while, that was a very wise move. Also good for you for getting back into it. Refreshed Carver equipment can stand up against almost anything short of equipment in the megabucks range, and somethings hold it's ground there, really well, too. Should it be necessary, there are certainly people, here, who are more than qualified to refresh or fix virtually anything bearing Bob Carver's name. The fellow who runs the site @Nahash5150 at Nelion Audio being a perfect example. Remember to post some pictures of your systems when you can. And remember to enjoy the music,

Welcome to the group @oakley104! No sense warning you of the perils of OCCD, it's clearly too late, which means you fit in here perfectly! There are lots of people who can help out with almost any Carver question, here, so do feel free to ask them. I won't promise to be of much use, especially for the more technical questions, but there are certainly those here who can. When you get to the point you can post some pictures, we would love to see some of your system. In the mean time, remember to enjoy the music! -
That's totally cool, Itch! Way to go to your kids!!!

I'm thinking of a new shootout... Thoughts?

You DID just step in it! Just don't lose sleep over it not being absolute perfection. It will be very useful information to most of us, and that is very welcome. If anyone wants to take you to task over it, might I suggest they be invited to take a nice long walk down the middle of a busy highway wearing a "Hit Me" sign. -

Welcome to the Site, Taylor - always nice to have another fellow Canuck join - there are a bunch of us scattered around, here. Your dad had good taste in amps - as others have mentioned, a TFM-45 has incredible potential and will definitely set you on the slippery slope of OCCD. It's well worth getting going. For now, join in the fun, and take time to enjoy the music! -
Welcome to the site and the addictive world of Carver gear. There's a wealth of information on maintaining and restoring gear, here, as well as plenty of knowledge to help you get there. Join in the fun, and remember to enjoy the music!

Welcome to the site! You have quire the collection of Carver gear, so no point in warning you about the perils of OCCD. Once you have a few posts under your belt, we'd love to see some pictures. In the mean time, join in the fun. and remember to enjoy the music!

I think that justifies moving him straight to the TOP of the list and pinning him there - preferably with switchblades.

I had a suspicion they might be. Looking forward to when you can post a picture, or several. Interesting setup! Sounds like quite the interesting creation for the preamp. The DSP makes perfect sense for the crossovers. Well done! -

Welcome to the site. That's an interesting blend of systems you have hooked up. At a guess, is the Sansui doing double-duty as the preamp as well as powering the highs? Also, what are you driving with them? Yes. we are way too curious for our own good. You've clearly already taken more than a couple of steps, down into the OCCD rabbit hole - no point in warning you off. Besides, we like company down towards the bottom of that pit. -

Welcome to the group. Like others have said, it's clearly WAY too late to warn you of OCCD, so ... just embrace it and enjoy the ride!!!! Both getting your gear refurbished, and going the route of Bob's new tube amps are great ways to go. Updated Carver SS gear can sound wonderful - and it has an amazing ability to be refurbished and updated, and in many cases modded and improved. Tube amps are a whole new world (and massive rabbit-hole) unto themselves. I will warn you that going down that rabbit-hole has no way out - if you take that step, you won't come back from it. No matter which route you follow, enjoy!!! -
Welcome to the group! You are definitely in a bit of a Carver hot spot in that area, so you are very well placed - you will most likely find yourself acquiring something Carver before you know it. Nice system and some very nice upgrades happening. Yes, playing with used speakers is a fantastic way to discover what sounds best, and at a far lower price than buying anything new. Speakers, unless abused, can hold their own surprisingly well through a long lifetime. Like with the speakers, Carver components can be an amazing way to really up your system at a very good price, and since they are usually so very update-able, they have a good long life ahead - especially compared to today's throw-away systems.

Hi New member here!
Brian_at_HHH replied to Enrique Jackson's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
Welcome to the group! Nice choice of equipment to rotate through in your system. Like others have indicated, the minus to any older equipment is that caps, etc. are due for a refresh after 25+ years, and the sound will improve very noticeably in most cases, and can, potentially, be a bit of a ticking time-bomb. The plus, is that many older quality components, for example Carver gear, really lend themselves to this, and can give you an absolutely killer system for a tiny fraction of what you would pay for new, or even recent, used equipment. It's an amazing way to jump from good to fantastic, and can leave you money to put towards other items (e.g., speakers, etc.) that improve things even more. There are plenty of folks here who can either guide you, or help you with getting things done. Oh, and yes, it IS very addictive. Trust me - I thought I was immune to it. Nope, not a chance. OCCD is incurable. -

A somewhat belated Welcome to the group! Nice acquisition (the '35), especially for someone with enough electronics knowledge to know which end of the soldering iron to grab hold of! You'll find there are plenty of folks here who can help guide you and give direction on what to update, or what to repair if things go awry, and in the worst case, there are some who are able to fix all but the very worst disasters. We're glad you decided to "creep on" to the site! Feel free to ask questions and join in the fun. Remember to take time to enjoy the music and Welcome once, again! -
A bit of a belated welcome to the group! There are definitely plenty of folks here dedicated to keeping, fixing, and enjoying Carver gear, but we are certainly not so single minded that we don't welcome info and involvement of other gear as well. The downside of being here is the ever present threat of OCCD - an insidious, incurable, and overwhelmingly enjoyable addiction to Carver gear that manages to find it's way into anyone who hangs around here for any length of time. I was in denial about it for the first, short while of being here. Many more Carver components later, I simply acknowledge the reality of it and enjoy the side effects. Remember to take time to enjoy the music!
