  1. Very much so! Then again, nobody ever claimed Walter and Donald were normal - even themselves.
  2. A lot of Steely Dan songs can fall into the Creepy, or at least Disturbing realm. Two Against Nature has some real winners: Gaslightiing Abbie and Cousin Dupree out to be enough to rattle one's comfort zone quite thoroughly. Or go dig into the means of Kid Charlemagne and The Royal Scam for some fun.
  3. Welcome Jeff! Don't fret about what's been sold off, just focus on what you have. The great thing with Carver gear is that there is such a dedicated bunch that look after, and even improve many of the devices - I see some good pointers to some above. There should be no problem getting your receiver fixed to to 100% or better. With luck your Theil's will be happily singing before long.
  4. Nice work, Mark! Love the decor! Neuveau retro speaker is SO in style right now! I keep forgetting that the NHT's have those side firing woofers, and looking at the relatively small size compared to the rest, yet knowing they put out awesome sound.
  5. Welcome (back)! It's great to see folks finding their way here from having been on the older formums. Sorry for the late welcome message - I had thought I'd put this up, but somewhere my brain must have taken a wrong turn. I can't help much on the electronics side (I know enough to be very dangerous - the only advantage I have is that I KNOW I only know enough to be very dangerous). That said, I'm also looking to learn, so please post your endevours, as there are plenty here who can help, and plenty who, like me, are interested. That's a nice collection of equipment you've gathered - thanks for the picture - feel free to post more of the system.
  6. Welcome to the group. I can see exactly what your problem was and yes, you made a terrible mistake - blowing the dust out is guaranteed to make it all fail in bizarre and spectacular ways - the magic dust is what makes it all work! Obviously I can't offer any good assistance in helping you get that receiver going, but as you've seen, there are lots of folks here who do know there way around the circuits and are happy to offer good help and guidance. Personally, I admire anyone willing to dive in there and have a go at things. Good for you. I'm sure it will get sorted out and making beautiful music in no time. Tanks again for joining!
  7. I'd say the terms Musician and Artist are very applicable, @Ln310. Anyone who can play in the Jazz/Fusion world is decidedly not lacking in serious talent.
  8. Welcome to the group! Very nice couple of setups, you have. I'd say there's nothing novice about your status. I can can imagine that the sub us likely a bit much for an appt. - probably more suited to, um, maybe a stadium... Let us know your musical interests, and relax and enjoy the music - while trying not to rattle dishes in the nearby apartments ... too much.
  9. Glad you did come back, @Bwest - you have my admiration for hanging in there as well as you are. I'm doing okay - I had a lot more time to "prepare" over all, and several months towards the end when she wasn't home any more, which meant it wasn't as . That said, what you describe about your feelings is absolutely 100% the same here. From everyone I know who have been through it, at least the first year is going to be rough, for sure. After that you hopefully start coming to terms with it, but, well, there really aren't any words - just know I get it, and nothing you feel is wrong - it all shows how much you cared, and still do. Feel free to PM me if you ever want to chat - I'm also happy to call and give you my number, though a heads-up I'm North of the border from you, so we I'm happy to put things on my nickel for calls - my long distance plan covers the US. :-) For now, keep putting one foot in front of the other, and know you were there through when it mattered most.
  10. I'm so sorry @Bwest- having gone though essentially the same thing as you, in the same time frame (lost my wife the end of April), really I feel for you. The group, here were my saving grace. Someone, here will likely be able to get ahold of Mark for you. He had been bouncing around the country with travelling jobs for a bit. Good luck getting your friend's Polks patched up and singing, again. In the mean time, take care, and if you need someone to commiserate with, don't hesitate to get in touch.
  11. Do I need an OPPOD sign to go with the OCCD sign?
  12. OOPo'S - Sorry @Sk1Bum - my bad. I just thought I remembered someone lamenting that the 105 didn't have any when they got one. I should know not to trust my memory, by now. When you can't remember your own name half the time, leaping before you look is unwise to say the least! Doh!!!!!
  13. Not sure whether to laugh or cry at your original description, @Butcher. Perhaps it doesn't like the hopps based beverages, maybe something closer to pure alcohol would work better? When shopping around, do beware that many of the newer SACD and Blue-Ray systems will only provide digitial outputs - no analog. Not a problem if you have a decent DAC to do the conversion, but highly annoying if you go to hook it up and there's no hole to fit the RCA cables to your stereo. IIRC one of the OPPOs suggested falls into that category, but I can't tell you which, for sure.
  14. Welcome to the group! Nice to see someone from he home of Carver.
  15. Welcome @Web! Even though I'm using primarily SS Carver gear, I completely get the love of"that kind of distortion" from tubes (I'm happy to have a tube buffer in my setup at least). There are plenty of folks here who know their way around the BillD mods for the C1 (which are fantastic, BTW), and plenty who can speak to the virtues of Bob's Crimson amps, too. For now, relax, and enjoy the music, while you tilt a Porter or Stout, and when you can post some pics of what you're listening to. Take care and stay well!
  16. Welcome!! Glad you found your way here, from the carveraudio site. There are lots of folks here who can help with your silvers, if you need it. And lots more who will be happy to offer moral support, in tackling the job. Make sure you have fun with it.
  17. Welcome, Carlos! You've certainly got a great amp to be looking at updating! Tons of capacity in there to take it to entirely new levels, or just add some new, fresh caps to it and give it many decades more life. Are you looking at doing the work yourself, or looking for someone to do it for you? Either way, there are lots here who can help you out. I have an upgraded M1.0t which is up to what is called the Mk II, Opt 2. level. It's extremely clean and puts out massively more power, now, than I have any sane use for. I have less than no regrests going that route, though I admit I did not touch it myself - I and the amp would likely both be fried had I tried that. I can certainly attest to the sound quality (and quantity) after having the work done - well worth while. In any case, please post some pictures of your setup when you have a couple of postings under your belt, and enjoy!
  18. Welcome @JoJo! Sounds like somebody did a number on those speakers. As long as the ribbons are actually okay and the main drivers work, it's likely going to be a reasonable effort to restore them to decent working order. I can't claim to have heard an myself, but by all accounts from people I trust, when working properly, Carver Amazing's live up to their name. SInce yours clearly are not, it sounds (no pun intended) like there's something technically at fault. Your amp and all should certainly be able to blow you out of the room - that setup should be able to rock a good sized stadium. SInce neither of your speakers seem to be doing much, I would hazard a guess that you are right to be looking into the crossovers. Something in there is not passing signal to the drivers. If it were just a driver gone, I would expect some of the woofers or one ribbon or the other to be giving you sound. Perhaps something is cross connecting the cables thanks to the meddler? Hopefully not, as that would be very bad for most amps. There are definitely folks, here, who are very adept at how to create good working crossovers for these speakers. Also, in a pinch, there's at least one person on the group who I think still does ribbon repair. So hang in there - I'm sure there's enough guidance here to get them singing properly, again.
  19. Having flown on WestJet, I can confirm they are definitely like this and a lot more entertaining than your average flight crews.
  20. @PMAT sounds like @Albikes will fit in here, perfectly. We definitely have all levels of audio nutcases um, er, addicts, here! Enabling one another seems to be rather strongly encouraged. Not that "I" would have noticed, or contributed ....
  21. Welcome! Nothing like diving straight in at the deep end! I'd warn you of the perils of OCCD, but it's clearly WAY too late, so instead, Welcome to the Club, and Enjoy!
  22. Only if you stop drinking! 😸
