A slightly belated welcome to the group! This is definitely the right place to come to get advice on your Carver tuner, and I see there are already some good suggestions listed. Sounds like quite the journey through various systems on your way to winding up in Maine. Do beware that if you hang around, here for any length of time, you stand to get bitten by the OCCD bug, and that tuner will start to breed into other Carver components before you even realise what's happening. In any case, make sure you take time to enjoy the music, and Welcome again! -
Well, in this case the protection is not optional - my main floor is all open concept, no no locking the bad little beggars out. And speaker grills like the NHT's are at an Oh-so-perfect height and are a perfect texture to be irresistible scratching posts. If I don't do something to protect them when they are not at cat-scatteringly high volumes 🙀, they would be shredded in no time. And yes, my 3 little demons are basically my only real family these days so they do get spoiled - but not to where the kids are allowed to play with dad's stereo! 😸

Sorry for the delay on finally responding to this, but I've now gotten that horrid slimy, gooey godawful mess off my speakers and Mark's felt solution in place. I've dealt with some really gut wrenchingly gross things in my life, but I can honestly say, the feeling of that stuff was jus about the grossest thing I've ever touched! Shudder! 🤮 Now that it's done, I can definitely say, that "no, one cannot see the light coloured felt through the speaker grills: The fist picture shows what can (or rather cannot) be seen through the grill, and the second is a peak under that grill. Now I did try to really enhance the 1st pic, to try and force even a trace to be visible, but Nada, nein, nope, nothin'. And just for giggles, here's one of my impromptu cat-scratch-excluders. I'm just using a melamine shelf (poorly positioned here) to protect the side woofer, when not in use. Try to ignore all the reflectons of @#$^ in and around the speakers - that's the downside of a shiny black finish. BTW, just a reminder to anyone doing this kind of work: brass screws look very nice but brass is DECORATIVE ONLY - DON'T TRY TO USE IT FOR STRUCTURAL PURPOSES. You would think I would know that by now, but the allure of "Oooooh Shiny!!!!" got me once again! Doh!!!! Trust me, here, just don't do it. Nice shiny stainless STEEL looks Perfectly good - really! Brass bad, Steel GOOD! Just repeat it as a mantra when building things. Lesson learned again ... until next time.. 🤪 Thanks again to @Daddyjt for the fantastic solution to that awful, self dissolving foam that NHT used!

Welcome to the site, and on having recently been able to retire! Knowing your way to fix up Sunfire subs certainly puts you in a great place to fit in here! There is a wealth of knowledge, here, but always room for more and for sharing. We certainly are not exclusive to gear within the Carver realm, so don't feel restricted to sharing info, or asking about other equipment. Join in the banter and conversations, while you are trying to stay warm for the winter, and take time to enjoy the music!

Welcome to the group! Nice systems, and a really nice job on that cabinet! There's clearly no point in warning you of the OCCD perils - you passed the point of no return, long ago! It's nice to know how solid your systems have been. The good news is that should there be a need, there is a wealth of technical knowledge here to help, and if some thing should be beyond you, there are folks who an definitely fix, repair, update or modify most things Carver, and beyond, among us (myself excluded -i'm forbidden from using soldering irons for good reason! ). For now, join in the fun, and enjoy the music!

How did this happen? I think I’ve turned into an audio SNOB!

Time to upgrade the rig in the truck, then, isn't it? 😁 -

Well that excludes Mark, and most of us, doesn't it? There's no "belief" here - we KNOW our tastes are superior. I in doubt, go throw some badly done Hip-hop or K-pop on for a few minutes! -

I have to agree with @Turbo and @Dadvw - in no way does this make you a snob! Nice try, but no cigar. I have been finding much the same thing. I'm guided more and more by the quality of the recording, rather than the music, any longer. I just find poor recordings very very tiring to listen to. The fact that so much of what is produced is driven into distortion, to achieve a greater loudness, in recent years makes many newer recordings virtually unlistenable. And no, it's not just a new phenomenon. However, when you hit one that's been done right, it just grabs you - regardless of the music. There's just a clarity, and openness to the sound that goes way above and beyond what it might otherwise have been. -
New to the forum but not Carver.

Welcome to thee site, @SRGresham! Glad you found us- you are definitely in the right place for keeping your Carver gear working great. clearly, there's no point in warning you of the perils of OCCD - that TFM-45 makes it cleat you're way past saving! -

Welcome to the group, @tregv10! Great to have another member from north of the '49th, here. There are beginning to be enough of us, now. I can't offer any advice on the Amazing's, but I see that others have already provided the best info about Ed for repairs, etc. Follow their advice - your Amazing's will have a long happy life for many many years to come. Your friend is likely right to want them over his Mirage's - they don't wear that name for nothing. As others have suggested, when you get a few more posts under your belt, please post some pictures of your setup. In the mean time, relax and enjoy the music! -

A definite big welcome to the group! Sounds like you've been getting guidance from the best, and that OCCD decidedly has it's hooks (appropriately) deep into you. No need to coach you on the merits of Carver gear, nor to tell you there are great people to help look after your gear, here - you're clearly in great hands, so please, enjoy the music, but I'd suggest you lay off Handel's Water Music for now. -
I'm going to guess, that like @Sk1Bum, with my ears, I probably won't notice any real sound difference, but I am convinced that the foam NHT used self destructs. I don't think I've ever seen a currentish picture of a NHT where they weren't in a semi- or mostly dissolved state. Mine certainly are, and just the thought of something decent, in their place is something I'm looking forward to. @Receiver2000, I'll try to take some pictures of the results, to post, so you can see if the "pantie lines" show.

@EADG, That is QUITE the juxtaposition of topics between the first ones and the last! Good for you! Love the balance of tech and art!

Which model(s) are you eyeing, @Rob? I don't know them well, but I believe @itchitch may have a few and could offer insight.

Yup, it's called using words with more than one syllable - keeps most Yanks thinking we're talking in code. (And yeah, I 'm sure I'm going to get sandboxed for that one - worth it, though !) -

Welcome to the group, Kevin! It's great having more of us from North of the '49th, here, even if you are way out on the left coast. Your story is all too familiar, so definitely welcome to the club of finally owning some fantastic Carver gear! Love your story - if you ever find that picture, PLEASE post it - that would be a fantastic addition, here! As for SH and DTL, SH, if you have an ear for it can be dangerously addictive. That was what left me overwhelmingly interested in all things Carver. DTL is far more subtle. For adding SH, pick up a C9 unit - there are often plenty floating around, and if you look you can find a good deal. Much cheaper than going whole hog on the system, and a great way to try out SH. DTL units are also pretty available, but they are really intended to go in line with a CD player to give it a little more, shall we say, turntable-ish type sound. I don't find it makes a huge difference to me, but SH is something I can't live without, now (my main system currently has 3 flavours of SH in it - no OCCD problem here!). -
Yeah, I totally get that. I have to put hard covers over my grills after every use. It was that or replace them with electrified wire mesh. 🙀 Fortunately, grill cloth can be replaced. BTW, congrats - nice addition. I won't offer help, but it seems there are lots of folks here who can. 😸

Welcome! That certainly IS an eclectic set of gear you have. Looks like some interesting combinations can be made. No sense warning you about the perils of OCCD, you are WAY beyond that! -
Hello from Michigan
Brian_at_HHH replied to Wilkic65's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
A belated welcome, @Wilkic65! Given the Riff Raff you appear to be hanging out with, there's clearly no point in warning you of the OCCD perils. @Rob is well on his way to earning the TCS Typhoid Mary award for infecting others with the addiction. This is a great bunch of folks, and it's a fantastic way to get into very high quality sound at an amazing cost. Carver gear is amazing and is of an era when equipment was meant to be maintained, so there's plenty of life, ahead. -

Welcome aboard! Nice to see someone who has had Carver gear for that long joining in. Hopefully some of the more technically adept, than myself, here, can help you out of having to follow the Fred Sanford approach to electronics maintenance. That said, my wild guess, off-the-cuff 🙂t is a speaker relay misbehaving, but take that with an extremely large grain of salt, about the size of a salt mine. In the mean time, join in the conversations, and enjoy the music (with the occasional smack to the side of the receiver no doubt in rhythm with whatever is playing. -
Oops, forgot to introduce myself.
Brian_at_HHH replied to jmardy's topic in The Welcome Shop (Please read first)
Welcome aboard! Don't worry about not having done an intro, first - you're in good company, there. I kept thinking, while reading your intro, that I should warn you of the perils of OCCD, but by the end of it, it was obvious it was far far far too late. So welcome to the wonderful world of OCCD as well, and enjoy the ride - there IS no escape, ever - not that you would ever want to if there was! Sounds like you have a very nice system, with vast amounts of potential, and more than a few "how did you steal THAT" bargains. :-) Once you have enough posts under your belt, put up some pictures for us. In the mean time, join in, and enjoy the music! -
Whoops - forgot to add a Welcome message to you, Pat! Glad you were able to find your way back to the Carver world. There are lots of people, here who can relate with your path. Sounds like you have a great system - and there are lots of folks here who can help you with the issues you are having. Good luck with it - I won't offer advice as it's likely to result in worse results than to help.

You DO love your Rabbit Holes, don't you @Rob !! Wish I could offer and opinion, but I've only ever heard one set of Carver speakers and that was circa 1983-ish. I do remember they sounded, dare I say, Amazing.
