What's the biggest subwoofer or sub enclosure you have ever seen or had the chance to hear.

I have had just about every subwoofer size from 6" to 18" and a variety of different enclosures  sealed, ported and several different band pass configurations.   Just wanted to see what you all have seen or heard that has made some impression on you (good or bad)  Pictures should be fun on this one.

I went to a guy's barn in NW Connecticut to pick up some gear...  anyway, he had me listen to his system. He had some huge Acoustat's backed by a pair of DIY subs.  Sorry no pics, but imagine  8 10" drivers on the front of a 8' tall cabinet, 12" wide, 4' deep. Now imagine 8 more 10's on the back. The cabinets are basically two sheets of 3/4" birch plywood with 16 drivers in between. Got that in your mind?   OK.    He had TWO of those!  32 drivers in 64 Cu.Ft. The room was about 30' deep and 20' across. The low bass control was impeccable. Too bad his imaging was very wrong. Too big. It felt like your perspective was as a fly at the tip of the stylus. Everything was HUGE! I did not enjoy the experience. BUT! I remember those subs! Wow!

Can't say that I knew for sure, but in a theater, I watched a movie called Roller Coaster. Crappy movie, but the subs were giant bass horns of some type. Impressive. Each horn looked to be 10' W X 3' H X by unknown Depth.

There's a story of Neil Young using a "Barn" for the enclosure..., and him demoing "Harvest" to Graham Nash from the middle of a lake by the barn, and yelling "more barn"....

Of course, I wasn't there.  But this story sticks in my mind as a good response to the request for the largest enclosure, here... 😉

A couple of references all fun reads, if you are a Neil Young Fan:

Want to read more about architectural design of concert-grade speaker systems..., check this Barn out on Poindexters.com.  Poindexter's does high-end audio, for any unique application (concerts to conventions, to homes, to ..., well, anyone with $$$)  I have a neighbor that does this for big venues (like inaugurations, ... 😉

I use a SVS PC13 Ultra in my HT.

It will shake a large home when the port plugs are removed.

The plates in the kitchen cabinets (up a floor and 35 feet away) will rattle.

Does pretty well for AUDIO listening with the ports plugged.

The biggest I’ve personally heard/felt is the Thor’s Hammer from

Wilson Audio. Mind blowing depth and power...

I thought it might work as well as, possibly better than an AED. I don't think you'd want anyone with a pacemaker near it though.

Dude, If I get one, would you help me get it down the stairs? Of course, you would be on the bottom end.

Get 2, so I can carry one with each arm to stay balanced. :D

Bro, in fairness, I should mention that there is a sharp turn at the bottom of the stairs. In fact, if I ever sell this house, the washing machine goes with it. I have never in all my years, known of any appliance that so heavy as this machine.

In the case of subs though, it's worth the back pain. Not mine... yours

I've listened to a pair of these; CV 21" - 2000 watts each

You're supposed to drain the water before moving these...

The largest subs I remember were a pair of the old Electrovoice 30" woofers installed in a wall using the garage behind them as the enclosure.

This was in the late 70's or early 80's. The fellow was driving them with a BGW 750 amp. I didn't care for the sound but it sure did shake.

The largest subs that I sold quite a few of were the Fried kits. (T, D, H & O ?)  with the coffin style cabinets.

These sounded wonderful using either the KEF oval driver or 8" or 10" depending on the model.

Here are some pics I found online to give you an idea...

This is interesting to me,  I always wanted to build speaker enclosures that doubled as furniture.  I know there have been numerous example of end tables and coffee tables that are speakers as well.  This coffin style would make a great coffee table I think.

Just don't leave a full coffee cup on it when you decide to crank the volume!
