That's a can of worms, Rob. What sounds good to you might not sound so good to the next guy. I tweak speakers constantly. Sometimes I win, often I do not. But I look to make them sound good to me. We all have different hearing, and preferences. Experiment. See (hear) what works and what doesn't. Make small changes, pay attention to the SPL 'efficiency' of drivers you swap out, look at the frequency ranges of drivers before you change them. It's fun when you don't get too hung up on what others have done. Just be sure you don't make any changes you can't reverse and try things.3 points

I have been grabbing speakers left and right and listening to them to see how they differ in performance. I am looking for people to offer their knowledge on brand upgrades if there are any. I.E. tweeter, crossover, inductors, capacitors. I have a few pair I want to work on. RTR Series 2 Ohm K2 Polk Monitor 10b I know these are smaller speakers but they sound good and they are stock.3 points

I have a Denon-103 cartridge. Where do I find info on cartridge loading? Or does anyone know off the top of your head what it needs to be set at. I'm playing with my fresh Nelion recapped Sunfire vtcc with a sweet new Nelion phono board. The options are 22, 47, 150, 470, 47k. I'm going to make a post with pics and give a review coming up soon.1 point

A post on theartofsound.com says 10x cartridge resistance is the usual starting point. Denon-103 is 40 ohms, so 400 would be the starting point. The original poster in that thread said his came to life at 1K ohms. https://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?62918-Denon-DL-103-impedance-load Though there is a bit of disagreement in the thread.1 point

Bob Dylan's Desire has been released on Mobile Fidelity Super Vinyl. 45 RPM, 180 gram, double album. It's a bit pricey at 74.99, but the pressing is limited to 1000 copies. I think it will double in value soon after the 1000 copies are sold. It's out of stock already on the Mobile Fidelity website, but their sister retail outlet, Music Direct still has copies in stock. https://www.musicdirect.com/vinyl/Bob-Dylan-Desire-(Numbered-45RPM-180G-Super-Vinyl-2LP)1 point

Hello Java1960, and welcome to thecarversite.com. We're glad you're hear. There is a lot of information here, much technical know how, and a pretty good bunch of folks that are happy to help. I don't know of anyone in the Houston area, but if you don't mind shipping, @Nahash5150 is in central Michigan, and he does excellent work. www.nelionaudio.com He's also one of the administrators here. All of the techs here do great work, so you can feel safe choosing any of them to do the service/upgrades. Once you get to Novice status, please consider uploading some pics of your gear in the Members Systems area. We all like pics of all kinds of audio gear. In the meantime, kick your shoes off, turn up the music, and welcome aboard.1 point

I don't have a direct answer for your question of "what is the advantage" of the MDQ-type fuse but I can say I never blew any fuses in my Amazing Hybrids until I had a PT-2400 for a short time, and even then it only happened because I was pushing the boundaries to see how much power the Hybrids could take. That's when I began looking for replacement MDQ-4A fuses and found them to be rather expensive. Not wanting to cough up the price or have to hunt them down every time I needed one I decided to install circuit breakers instead. Somewhere on this site there's a write-up I did 9 years ago but I couldn't locate it via search. I used a breaker that has the same physical profile of the fuse holder in the Amazings. Yes, a breaker is slower than a fuse but I'm not the volume freak I once was so I just don't worry about that. I expect the breakers to pop if there should ever be a problem in the system.1 point

hi group I am new here but an old Carver fan picked up this AV806x on Ebay as is , 150 , three channels dead probably 4 , rca's & spkr terminals bashed / bent but all else looks original inside , I can buy new boards for any of the 5 slave modules but not the master which of course is bad this board has all the connections for the RC5 remote and that multi pin controller connection which I don't need or any bridging this master has extra components onboard at the rear however other than that it seems pretty similar to the slaves wondering if I could just replace the master w a new slave , ...? a bit concerned that it may not work ...as in the slaves will be looking for a master ...? the next option is to rebuild the whole board , I have read of a few other members having trouble sourcing caps that fit etc ....if anyone has thoughts about this it will be mighty appreciated thanks Bernie1 point

So is it determined that the board from the Marantz MA500 would work in the AV-806x? I have one with channel one not working1 point

Anybody know if there is a service center that in the Houston area that could service Carver amps? Maybe even do the MKII upgrades for my M-1.0t ? Any pointers on some things to look for before on my AV-806x before sending for service? Channel one does not seem to put out any sound.1 point
