I'm(finally) putting all my CD's on my cloud. Tonight I found my Reference Disc 2014. I had put it in a safe place. Anyway, it's been a while and there's been a lot of good music out since then. Let's try to pick a dozen or so songs from 2014-2017, maybe new groups like XX or new music by old(or passed) artists we've loved for years. In fact, let's just go with artists we lost in 2016. Bowie, Cohen, Prince... I think we can come up with a dozen call it "In Memoriam, 2016" I want to nominate "I Can't Give Everything Away" from 'Blackstar', possibly first or last. Fitting last song, actually. Who wants to do the compiling and burning of the discs? I won't do a great job and it will take forever...

Infinity 9 Kappa Placement and Zero Soundstage Problem

Get anywhere? I know I had to get mine up pretty loud to get good imaging. Might that be your issue? -
Infinity 9 Kappa Placement and Zero Soundstage Problem
kve777 replied to Greg Viggiano's topic in Loudspeakers
10' might be too far... Start with them only 6' apart. Very slightly toed in. Like only a 1/2 inch. You need Speaker Tractors. I came up with the idea of remote controlled, omni-directional, motorized platforms, for speaker placement. I don't know of any in existence, though. -
Infinity 9 Kappa Placement and Zero Soundstage Problem

I found this in a HIFI Review article: The Infinity 9 Kappa is relatively easy to place. Although it is definitely a "big speaker," it still is small enough to fit into most real-world listening rooms. It does benefit from every inch of space you can give it, relative to rear and side walls, but it performs well at distances as short as 3 feet from a room boundary. While bass performance is sensitive to placement relative to corners and the rear wall, the 9 Kappa was much easier to place than any true dipole speaker I've encountered, and relatively small adjustments in position were usually adequate to smooth the sound of the bass. The imaging is broad and smooth in a wide range of listening areas, particularly if the speaker is parallel to a smooth rear wall surface or just slightly angled so that each speaker is aimed at a point about 2 feet behind the listening position. You can easily use a wide couch or several chairs at the listening position and still get an excellent sound stage, and the sound stage will remain acceptable over an even wider area. The driver configuration is also well chosen; the drivers are high enough to overcome the effects from most furniture and floor surfaces, and they provide a good vertical image without the need for major floor-surface treatment. It looks like you have them too angled and too far apart. 6-8 feet apart is OK. Try for 3 ft. from outer and back walls and pointing straight back, then toe them in slightly, "Don't cross the beams!" To be more accurate, I need to know the dimensions of the room and where your listening spot is, dimensionally. Are you using Sonic Holography? That might change things. -
Welcome! A C-1 is a great place to start owning Carver. Stick around and you will buy more. I guarantee!

Preamp.Absolutely. I proved this exact point ten years ago. I had a shop system- Toshiba CD player, Carver MXR-150 receiver and a nice little pair of Allison (AL-110's) bookshelf speakers. Sounded really good. Then I bought a Conrad Johnson Premier 17-LS S2. Tried it in the first system I came across, well it was that shop system. I put The CJ in instead of the Carver pre section. WOW! Totally different sound. Crazy imaging, no harshness. It was nuts! Never have I heard such a radical change in sonic signature. The best word was "Unveiling", totally like I flipped off the Hi Cut and Low Cut switches. I just was in awe. I wanted to wrap myself up in that sound, it was so good. Definitely one piece I should have kept, but I needed to flip it. So, yes, the preamp is the most important component. Choose wisely. Your ears are depending on you!

Greg, can you post pics of your Poly Domes?

I'm sorry I didn't get to hear those at CF'16, Ray.

I'm using a pair of Klipsch KLF10's on my garage system. These sound more like Mach One's, especially in the bass department, Lascala's and Belle's can be light on deep bass and take up a lot of floor space. K-horns not only need space, they need corners, too. Speakers in the KLF, KSF, etc. families have great deep bass and precision, more in keeping with the OP's intent. Easier to find, too.. Cabinets may need reinforcing, but that's an easy fix. I got mine on CL for $50.00, so the good deals are out there!

Excellent! Thanks for the oil formula tip!

Woofers or Subwoofers? I entered your parameters for woofers and found none, for subwoofers and found only one at $39. None at $35. Yes, what is the part number? Forget buying new. Get good used, vintage type. You live near Chicago, tons of great deals to be had. HERE is a very nice pair of speakers you could own and customize for years. I wish they were closer to me! -
Thanks. The CD is a good buy.

Well, it's been a year and I finally found some! The GW near work had a 5.1 speaker system featuring SS-K10ED and SS-K30ED with an SS-CNK10ED and an SA-WX700 sub. All for $99.99. The sub won't power on(no big deal, I can fix the plate amp or just power the two monstrous 10's with external amps) but all of the other speakers work flawlessly. These things sound as smooth as silk and image like crazy. Ratamahatta- If you ever consider selling/trading those K90ED's, I want them! If anyone else comes across any of the SS-KxxED series speakers, pick 'em up! I'm looking for more.

Klipsch and JBL are my fav PRO speakers(never had any VOTT). Enjoy!

None here, either, but I do have a Sony DAC machine, with tapes, in case you get bored with the minidisc. Can't you just cut down a CD? Most of the info is in the middle anyway... Or- Buy a pile of used discs HERE
