I noticed some similarity to a song by Pink Floyd on The Wall, too. Can't put my finger on the song, though. Guess I'll have to listen to the whole thing again real soon!

The C-7030 Laser can be bought HERE for about $30.00. Apparently they are becoming a problem failure.

You are not going to fix that hole. HERE is a copy for $3.39. Just buy it and throw away the other one. Simple. Money for Nothing came out late in 1988.

You should be able to track down an open in the circuit for the ribbons with just the meter. Pull out the crossover and check for continuity across the entire circuit with the ohm meter. I would measure the ribbon circuit, first, yes. Good place to start. Should read under 10 ohms. If open or more than 10, your problem is somewhere in the ribbon, bad solder joints in the boards at top and bottom are highly suspect, yes. One trick, hook up a known good conventional speaker driver, like a car speaker you might have, to the crossover instead of the ribbon. If it plays, the crossover is not the problem. You can do the same test for the woofer, too, if one is not working. I have a pair of AL-III crossovers if you find a problem and need parts from them...PM me. Note: Not just any 10" car sub will be satisfactory. High efficiency(about 94dB@ 2.83V/1M) and high Qts(over .40) are key. The Infinity Kappa Perfect 10.1, 4 ohm, single VC has been determined to be the best, but are now hard to find.

I miss my JBL C-60 Sovereign's the same way. Crystal clear sound to very high levels with very little power. Bass was a little better with the added passive radiator of the C-60's. A messed up crossover will ruin the sound.

Welcome! To add to Zumbini's amp info- many of the good speaker choices have dips into low impedance, which isn't good for bridged amps. The M-4.0t/TFM-42/TFM-45 family is a great place to start with high power requirements and match that C-9.

Those are many steps up from the J350A's!

I just picked up a pair of JBL J350A's. Local GoodWill Thrift Store for $19.99/pr. I almost said no, too crappy, as I remember reading reviews of the J series being consumer grade fodder for the big box stores and lacked any redeeming qualities for the $325.00 each they were sold for back in the mid 80's. I hooked them up to a Receiver 900, which is my go-to tester now, and as expected, they made no sounds at all. oh wait! The 900 was missing it's jumpers. Duh! OK, now sound, but badly distorted... it's the 900 again! A dirty Tape Monitor switch. Finally, I have a clean signal to the JBL's. Put my ear to each driver, damn! They all work! Not even a dented dust cap! Hey, these things sound pretty good. No, really good. Much, much better than one would expect, based on those reviews. Clean, clear highs, solid mids, decent bass. SCORE! So-If you happen upon a pair of J-series, give 'em a listen, they might surprise you. The ONLY reason I bought them- I really needed to find a pair of speakers for a system I'm putting together for a local record store where I might be able to move some gear out of, if the owner isn't too greedy. I figure I'll put in a system, replace each component as they sell. I know I'll need a TT, preamp, amp, CDP, tape deck, maybe even an EQ, along with the speakers. I just don't want to put really good gear in until I know how it's going to go. If I have a whole system in there and I'm into it for under $100.00, I won't be out much if it gets 'lost' or wrecked. These JBL's will be perfect.

I've contemplated doing a 'blue' tuner or receiver. Lots of work. The sticking buttons is easier- take it apart and clean the contact pads with rubbing alcohol 92%.

Driviong 40+ miles a day to and fro, it's nice to see $1.559. I remember when I was driving my E-250 and doing courier work, filled up a 33 gal. tank THREE times in ONE DAY! At almost $4.00/gal., you do the math... Still, I want to build or buy an electric vehicle. Something simple and light, like a Hyundai Accent or Honda Civic. Cover the roof hood and trunk with Solar cells and a nice sized storage battery. Gotta be something better than Li-Ion, though.

I've found a few out thrifting and at flea markets. Nobody really special. Gotta wait 'til they die to maybe be worth anything. This might be the year for a lot of that.(too soon?)

Yet another chapter of Life and Times of HiFi in South Jersey! I picked up a Celestion 5 in black, about three years ago, and just put it to the side, thinking someday I'll take apart a bunch of speakers for eBay, selling drivers and crossovers, as a single speaker rarely sells for much. Yesterday I was at the Goodwill store near work and found an identical match! $4.99. I looked around a bit for it's mate, but none seemed to be there. At the time, I thought it looked familiar, but what are the chances? First thing I did when I got home was dig a little, sure enough, it was the same! That just doesn't happen everyday! Last summer, BillWojo gave me a single KLH SIX, a couple of weeks later while at the local flea market I saw another SIX, but it was painted black and the bottom was peeling off(displayed upside-down?)! When I inquired as to the price, the little old lady said $25.00, but I have to take both, as they are too heavy for her to lift. I got the pair for a twenty dollar bill. That's kind of the same 'orphan uniting', because the black painted one was so rough. All three SIX's work fine, BTW. I have to test the new Celestion. I hope it works! Parts are not easy, especially the tweeters. I'll go back today and look for more. They don't all make it to the floor together. Supposedly the 5's are a damn good sounding speaker. The SIX's are legendary, sounding better to me than Original Advent Loudspeakers. Anybody else have a good orphan story?

First thing I'd do is hit every switch, pot and connector with DeOxit and articulate them vigorously. Dirty tape monitor switches, balance pots, etc can almost eliminate the output. The least used ones are most suspect as they can build up a layer of crud that will not conduct. Oxidation on connector pins inside will do this, too. Hint: take pics if you are going to unplug a lot of connectors. Some will fit in multiple sockets. Clean the input/output jacks, too. Let us know if this helps.

Welcome! According to the schematic, just proper jumper positions will let you run it on 240VAC. I believe the fuse value must be halved as well. What model preamp?

Rolling Stone apparently thinks vinyl is a "fad." Yeah, just another 100 year long fad!

Sounds like Michigan and New Jersey are a lot alike!

That PRE ON message means it's in protection. Knowing the age, it's probably due for a major service.

Better than cassettes with a good player.

Unopened 8-track tape- Dickey Betts and Great Southern. Arista 8301-4123H $10.00, shipped(CONUS) I stole the pic, there is no hole in the cello of the one I have, otherwise, identical.

I'm pretty sure you're asking too much of your tv to decode one audio for its self and another for your receiver. Might be time to upgrade. I finally gave up my Sony STR-DA4ES for HT. I have an Anthem AVM20(by Sonic Frontiers) that has Group Audio Delay for syncing with the picture. The AVM20 is an amazing unit and can be had for under $400.00 because it has no HDMI ports. HERE I use an automatic HDMI switcher to choose Cable box, BluRay or DVD that I got on eBay for $20.00. The AVM20 is just for audio and I can hook up lots of Carver amps to it. It even has three zones.
